Learnings from Miracle named Maxwell!

“If you believe in yourself then only you can make impossible things happen”…

This is not some big name's quote, this is what I felt while watching Glen Maxwell play on  the date 7 11 23, in the ICC Men’s World Cup vs Afghanistan! Just when I was going to start writing my sharing about team India’s attitude towards the game in league matches till now Glen’s game made me stop my sharing about team India & start writing about him instead, such was that innings & I am sure entire Australia must have stopped for last one hour of that innings to watch him play! Well, for all the non-cricket lovers (there are many such), at present ICC, (its International Body for cricket governance just the way IOC is for Olympics or FIFA is for Football) men’s cricket one world cup is going on in India & our team is at top of the table & team Australia is on third position & has nearly confirmed their semifinal seat. First of all, let me tell you all the readers (especially those who don’t like cricket & those who hate glorification of this game too) that I do like cricket but more than that I love every sport especially ground or say physical activity involved games (with due respect for chess) & this sharing about Maxwell’s innings is not just for cricket fans or lovers but for every sports lover & why one should play a game! So please read with an open mind to understand the importance of this innings from the lessons it has taught or it can teach us as by now the media is full of praising Maxwell & the records his innings has broken but what as an individual has given me , that is what I will like to share here!

I presume even cricket non-lovers also understand this game as it’s not that difficult & most of us )Indians) have been exposed to cricket at some juncture of life so I won’t waste words in explaining rules or game details but Afghanistan has set a decent target of runs on board to chase & nearly two third of Aussie team was out with just one third of the runs on the board i.e. 7 wickets were down at mere 90 runs making nearly 201 runs yet to score, such was the scene & even die-hard Aussie fans wouldn’t have given any chance to their team for victory & yet Aussie team end up winning the game by three wickets!  At such a stage Maxwell made 201 runs ( a double hundred) in mere 128 balls & achieved the target. These words may be enough for statisticians to maintain their records but how this was achieved is a school for every sportsman  rather for every human being! As when Maxwell came to play already his team was three or four wickets down with run-rate rising & huge total to reach. And later also two wickets fell, making only the bowlers accompanying him. The match was in Mumbai making weather extreme humid & pollution level of air definitely much worse than what Maxwell is used to back in his country, both things  are against him while the opposite team is well versed with this weather rather Afghanistan has worse than this so they have upper hand on the weather front also. Now, as I have explained to you the situation, here are my takeaways from Maxwell’s innings…

1.Maxwell got two or three lives as the catches got dropped & survived an LBW appeal in the very early stage of his innings but that made him more focused as after the last catch drop, he didn’t give a single chance to Afghan team. We all blame luck when things won’t happen the way we wanted them to be so, there is no such thing as luck as it favors both sides but only the one who is capable & ready to grab that chance ends up as a winner which Maxwell did. As luck gave chance to Afghan Team also by making Maxwell mistook the shots but Afghans dropped those chances while Maxwell grabbed them, this is what we also should learn! We all get chances sometimes we see them sometimes we don't but that’s not the fault of the chances, it’s our fault we are unable to see or notice them! Maxwell’s inning taught me the importance of chances & my readiness to grab them & en-cash on them!

2.Maxwell was injured due to cramps & dehydration & was exhausted, in any other time he would have opted to retire hurt & reserve his energy for next game but here he knew after him there is no batter in the team & he must take lead & go on, which he did. In life also if you want to become a winner then you must take lead & responsibility by your own-self rather than waiting for someone to do for you, that is what differentiates a champion & others!

3.Make your pain & exhaustion as  your strength rather than crying for it! Maxwell was in pain & he didn’t hide displaying his discomfort while playing but that he used as his tool because that made him explore his strengths & he focused on the shots which he can play rather than worrying for the shots he couldn’t play because of injury or pain. At the same time, he realized he couldn’t run so he tried to conserve his energy by hitting the loose ball with conserving strength rather than wasting his energy for running singles or doubles! This is what we all should learn as we often curse for our weaknesses & try to cover them & in the process, we ignore our strong points & maximize them to get out of the trapped situation, may it be body or mind, always focus for our strengths is the lesson I learnt watching Maxwell playing in pain & exhaustion!

4.Make use of our weakness to divert the attention of our opponent. Maxwell’s display of his discomfort due to injury made the bowlers change their tactics which they haven’t thought & that made them change their line & length of bowling & in the process they end-up bowling as per what Maxwell wanted for his strengths! This is something I have observed in Jacky Chan’s movie Karate Kid, where Jacky’s young student was battling finals of Martial-Art championship & was already in extreme pain due to injured left leg in earlier rounds. But rather than making effort of hiding that pain Jacky asks his student to display the discomfort of the injured leg making the opponent focus all his moves aiming for the injured leg & in process exposing himself totally to the student’s fitter leg’s assault & in the end Jacky’s student won the match with using just one leg! Maxwell exactly did the same, he was in pain but the Afghan bowler rather than continuing their earlier wicket taking line tried to focus on bowling a line which they thought would be difficult to play for Maxwell with his injury & missing completely in the process!

5.Determination & never say die attitude, till the last ball is bowled in the match. The more pain the more focused Maxwell was becoming & more determined too, as that’s how one should be, instead of crying over the discomfort life has given you. This makes two things happen, your mind gets diverted from the pain & all you think about is, the final goal which is needed to reach.

6.Last, but not least, equally important was support from the other end which you do get when you display such dedication & determination as that's the biggest motivation for your teammates making them  able to lift their respective game too! Maxwell’s battle made his captain, Pat Cummins who was at the other end to stick around & not to give away his wicket easily, this is what one determined member of team can make to others!

7. Finally when the target was achieved the celebration didn’t come as jumping all around & teasing opponents by body gestures but in a controlled calm smile as well opening of arms to the crowd; this is how a professional champion greets hard earned success!  Worth a lesson for many youngsters who get carried away by little success & I am not referring to some win in some game but on many fronts of life!

The cricket god Sachin Tendulkar himself described Maxwell’s innings as the best ever he has witnessed in One Day games & coming from Sachin, we can imagine the way Maxwell has played! With all due respect, the Afghan team gave a brave fight & Maxwell needed to create a miracle to save his team which itself is a victory for Afghanis  considering the difference on geographical, professional as well experience scale between the two teams! Yet, they too must have learnt their lesson of grabbing the chances in the game & sure this match will help them become a better team, that’s what such innings of a player (though he is an opponent) teaches you even when you lost!

Thanks Glen Maxwell, Pat Cummins & Afghan cricket team for a lifetime display of spirit of the game named cricket which made me retrospect my own stance towards my life & making me realize chances my life has given to me & to grab them rather than crying over what life has not given to me, adios with this gratitude note!

Brightness of Togetherness is Brighter than a Thousand Lights…

Friends, first-of-all, wish you all a very happy, healthy Diwali as this time’s darkness accompanied us much longer, nearly three years & just when the world is taking sigh of relief for defeating the unseen enemy in the form of a virus there is another darkness in the form of our age-old enemy i.e., wars, which are outcome of terrorism, hatred under the name of religions & caste & poverty! If the virus war we won’t by standing strong together forgetting of what caste we are  & which god we pray then this war of terrorism & hatred also can be won with the same weapon i.e., togetherness. Only difference is the virus war we had vaccines as our shield while in the war with hatred we need to have a vaccine named responsibility!

Agreed, we all understand our responsibilities towards our family, friends, colleagues but when it comes to understanding our responsibility towards the society or people whom we don’t know then sorry to say we are very selfish or short sighted & this is where we need to improve if we want to defeat an enemy named hatred! As we think of what gifts our family members or friends will like to have from us or even expects the way we should react when someone from them makes a mistake & we try to behave the way they wanted us we should, that is friends being responsible to them, right? But ask our own self individually, how we react when its about our action when some shares some wrong message about a caste or religion on Whatsapp or the way we break social rules such as jumping red traffic signal or even ignoring a wounded wild animal (even humans) on the road; do we react responsibly at such times? I know the answer & the reason is, we think why we should be responsible for such things as none of our so-called close ones are involved, right? This is where we should add something to this Diwali along with Happy & that is, Responsibility, as once we start following it on all fronts of the society then this hatred named enemy won’t be able to force us to behave wrongly & that’s the surest way to defeat it! Smallest things we can start with such as not burning fire crackers, plant a tree & make it grow, don’t forward caste/religion hatred spreading messages, help any poor family around you in every possible way, drive carefully on road & the list of being responsible is endless!  So, please go ahead  & start a new era, an era of togetherness  by being responsible human-being towards every wrong thing happening around  us, by lending a hand to conserve nature as well by helping someone who needs just a little support from you & make this Diwali the Brightest i.e.,Responsibilitywali!

Tadoba Forest; New Season, New Excitement!

“Not all dusty, bumpy rides are stressful but some of them make you at peace too”…

This is what I felt while riding in the gypsy on a road (well, if you can call a boulder laid, steep slope as road) in Alizanza Buffer of Tadoba! here, you don't notice the bumps which makes otherwise your neck & back ache nor you realize the red dust in the air due to vehicles movement which or else you would have cursed as pollution because your mind is engulfed in the search of those yellows black stripes which comes along with loads of greens & fragrances of heaven! And the outcome is sheer peace as you become part of the forest which surrounds you the way the sea surrounds a fish, that's what Tadoba does to you!! Right from a mongoose climbing on a tree to a sloth beer blocking your way to the tigers roaming around in their own mood, forest makes you at peace provided you go there first & learn to live by the rules of the forest! Well, October makes the new season’s start for the reserved forests of India i.e., core zones of project tigers & what better place than Tadoba it could have been for me to start it! For those who are unaware of wildlife tourism, the tiger parks (parks doesn’t mean the parks in our cities) which are reserved forests to conserve tiger & wildlife are closed during monsoon as road conditions can get bad & all such forests are open for tourism only post monsoon that is October! Though during monsoons buffer zones of these reserved forests are open & I had been to tadoba’s buffers even in monsoon, so you must be wondering with the series of sharing about Tadoba that am I obsessed with Tadoba, then my answer is yes, I am obsessed with Tadoba forest & these sharing’s may seem repeat telecast but they are not as every day the forests is new & here we are talking about new season, so if you are a wild lifer (and even if you are not but want to know about wildlife) then do read ahead, lol!

 

First thing about this part of the year visiting the forests is, the animals’ colour pattern change as well the glow their skin gets with the winter ahead. I have clicked sloth bears (more hairs make you look messier with heat) in summer & hair which looks dry & grey becomes shiny black, just like a kid whose hair has been oiled & combed by his mom! And the Tadoba does makes me lucky also as I got to click the sloth bear in clear in the first place, is also a reason for these sharing & my trips to Tadoba!  But more than all these sightings & tigers (of course) what pulls me towards Tadoba forests is the bond between the tigers (read as wildlife) & the people here which seems to be growing strong (touchwood) with every new season of wildlife. Not only nearly 22 plus numbers of gates which makes you able to visit these forests may it be a core or buffer but they are like t=22 gates to heaven on the earth, such is magic which unfolds in-front rather all around you, once you enter in the forests here! And while you earn peace on these rides by being merged with nature at the same time the forest teaches you so many new things just the way you learn same subject in more depth as you study it in every new year but forward! Every new day & season of tadoba forests makes you able to see wildlife with a new vision, listen new languages of the forests, inhale new fragrances of nature, all this is possible only if you visit the forests often & with open mind as well a wish to learn from it! And it’s not just about the wildlife but these trips (safaris) make you able to understand man-animal relations or bond with a new dimension which in our city life we are losing fast even with the humans itself!

 

Here in these forests, you meet people whom you knew & new people also & all of them has some story to share which makes you able to understand forest in better way. For e.g. I met a young lady guide Dnyaneshwari who is native only from the Belara village in buffers & was sharing her experiences as guide (read as lady guide). It’s so amazing to listen the stories these youngsters talk about their sightings as guide & as a native as they have grown up seeing wildlife (read as tigers) around & their love/affection about the wildlife is clearly visible from their words & more from their expressions while they share the stories. She was speaking about the tigresses Veera, Junabai like they are her sisters & how she gets happy when see get to see them & how she has seen them as a villager also as for tigers’ boundaries of humans are not binding & they can be seen out of the so-called reserved forests also! It’s heartening to see the younger genre aspiring to make career in wildlife that too women as its tough job, while entire house is sleeping you must leave your home for the morning safari & that can’t be excuse of getting away from your household duties such as cooking, washing utensils etc after dinner on the earlier night! As well, in the forests its high-time to make toilets at regular interval on all the routes as in the winter mornings, nature’s call is natural for everybody, & I really wonder how can be our system be so insensible not to take any action about it! As when tiger sighting is going on nearby & some lady or elder person in the gypsy is needed to use wash room at that time only,  you can’t expect the entire gypsy to go some ten kms back to gate as people spend fortune for one safari to see a tiger (nothing wrong in it) & just because one can’t hold nature’s call one should not be deprived sighting of the tiger as we can’t provide toilets at right places in the forests, high time all the tourists must right to PM or Hon President or Hon Supreme Court for this aspect of wildlife tourism, at least now when we have so many lady guides in our service, we must consider their comforts too!  But then the system (read as govt) which can’t provide good clean toilets in city like Pune what we can expect from them in remote places like Tadoba forests is also true, yet keep fighting for right things is all we can do, right? And then the issue of public toilets is grave in the villages around our forests which I am repeatedly raising voice about as there are boards on the entry of all villages saying “hagandarimukt gaon” i.e. village where nobody has to go in open for nature’s call but you can see poor ladies shying away from headlights of our car  while going towards gate in the early morning, guys we are in 2023 & sending rockets to Moon & we can’t make public toilets for our country’s women, shame on us! At the same time its main cause of man-animal conflicts also as these early hours are the hunting time for animals like tiger & leopards & these women become easy prey for the wild animals!

Speaking about women & the risk they are ready to carry for the wildlife career; at one water hole we were waiting, ours was lone gypsy & we know a tigress is sleeping in the bushes nearby. Just when the tigress arises from her sleep & was ready to come out, a forest dept’s vehicle approached the water hole & a lady scientist got down to replace the camera trap memory card unaware of the tigress which was just few feet away from the spot. We alarmed her about presence of the tigress & she hurriedly sat back in the car!  Guys, while you read these words sitting relaxed (and safe) in your respective homes you won’t imagine the tense moments at such times & that’s why try to support from our side as much to every that person who risks his or her life so that we can enjoy wildlife!

 

And coming to sightings (how we can forget this aspect), Tadoba never stops making me lucky & this trip too was not an exception, right from tiger sightings too sloth bear to mongoose on tree, here were many wonderful sightings which only can be experienced as no picture can tell the complete story yet I clicked a few! One special click was while waiting for alarm calls our guide spotted some movement on a nearby tree & to our surprise it was a grey mongoose climbing on that tree. I knew mongoose are master thieves of bird’s eggs from their nests & can climb on trees but has never witnessed which I could this time & even click a few good images of the same, while our driver was urging to rush towards the alarm calls! Friends, we all like to see a tiger but forest is full of other many wonderful things also, so don’t neglect or ignore these while you are on search for the tigers!

 

The Queen of Kolara-Madanapur!

She is don't have a big frame neither she has eye catchy features in comparison with her neighbouring tigresses, she never got the fame (which she deserves) like Maya & Tara or Sonam, yet she rules Madnapur-Kolara buffer of Tadoba for last six years & is the reason to make thousands of families earn their livelihood here, she is Junabai! And she is beautiful by her attitude, it's because of Junabai & other such tigers today that tadoba buffers are not just most popular among wild lifers & tourists but is the reason to make residents here love & care for the tigers, like they are part of villager’s family! Its such wonderful bonding between tigers & people around Tadoba which has made Tadoba a heaven for the tigers & we are lucky to experience it alive!

Story of a Dead Tree!

Chris is an author, international lecturer, consultant, and facilitator in social-environmental sustainability, he has spent over 20 years as a research scientist in natural history and ecology. He currently lives in Corvallis, Oregon, USA. And no wonder with such connection with nature he can relate human behaviour with trees (read with nature at large) & outcome we are seeing all around us. If you think this is one more cry filled sharing about how we are degrading nature & conservation then you are right & those who are bored with it they can stop reading & watch reels on Insta (lol), But those who have some interest in saving nature & feel their responsibility towards it they can (should) read ahead  as what I am sharing today is not some green gyan.com about tree cutting or green cover reduction (by heading you must have judged it)  but day to day things happening around us & what we can do about it & more than that saving or say adding beauty in our routine life with presence of a tree, even a dead one!

Well, as the heading says it’s about story of a dead tree & that too a Subabhul tree which grows anywhere in this country & to my knowledge is not even indigenous (desi) tree yet we can see it all around, though not much in our concrete jungle we are calling as our city & yes, it’s about a Coppersmith Barbet pair too, which used to be sat on this dead tree! I stay in a suburb named Erandwavnae, Patwardhan Baug which can be even considered as  central Pune also & thankfully the road runs parallel to Mutha river in front of my building & there are still a number of trees which are left here! There is a dried Subabhul tree among the green lining of the trees such as Ashoka, Amaltash, neem along the compound wall of my building & may be that’s why I never noticed this dried grey black dead tree till one morning I heard a sharp cuk cuk cuk sound in my hall. Intrigued by the voice I went outside of my hall on the attached terrace & tried to locate the origin of this sound & soon to my wonder I saw a colourful pair on a grey dead branch of this Subabhul tree which never has caught my attention but here on that tree a pair of green barbets were sitting on top & singing together. I rushed to get my camera & could click some good snaps of the barbet pair which even in forests I couldn’t have got! Reason was, the tree was dry, the barbets usually sit at the top of such a tree & my flat is on the ninth floor so I could get an aerial view of the barbet pair which in the forest is never possible & I was thrilled!

Post that morning it became a ritual to listen to the cuk cuk music usually in the early hours of morning & watch the barbet pair keep sunbathing in the morning sunlight & keeping an eye on the city around which starts its morning ritual & then flew to the shadow of greener trees! Even in afternoons the barbets used to visit this dead tree & I used to wonder what they do in the harsh noon in open & when looked closely through tele-lens of my camera, the barbet was looking for the food in the form of insects below the dried bark of the tree branches, so the dead tree was giving food also to the barbet and not just offering a place for sunbathing! And then one morning one more sound joined the barbet's cuk cuk song, a strong chirping sound it was & to my delight today a hornbill pair has joined the barbets on the dead tree! It was a wonderful sight as the tree has not a single green leaf making the barbets look like leaves on it & the grey hornbills looking like extended branches of the dead tree now! Though the hornbills were there for food but just may have found the dead tree branches as a safe and open landing place to have a look around the habitat (lol) but they too become regular visitors of the tree post that morning & barbets seems to have no objection to that!

Surprisingly grey pigeons which are a big nuisance in the cities of late & kites never came & sat on this tree which is a good thing actually, as they would have drove the barbets away for sure but there are few more visitors such as Bulbuls, Alexandrine parakeets (which most city people mistook as Parrot) & Mainas, on this tree which barbets are used to with. Post pandemic, I have observed an increase in numbers of parakeets around, reason may be anything but that’s a fact & only thing is it should not imbalance the other smaller birds like barbet & sparrows, is my concern. And when the sun goes down, I realized the dead tree becomes host to a few night birds also which my locality is lucky to have around, & they are owls & bats!  There has been spotted owlets as well barn owls which are nocturnal & bats, thanks to tree cutting around Karve road near Omkareshwar temple where there used to be a huge bat colony which get dispersed for giving away the trees for a complex (what else), all these bats have taken refuge on the trees along the road of our building! Because of my poor camera skills, I am (was) yet unable to click these night birds on the dead tree but I could watch them & more than that feel very much their presence on the tree at night!

For nearly three years (thanks to Pandemic) watching the barbets & other guests on the dead Subabhul tree had become my best of time (not time pass) till one day the cuk cuk music stopped. By now life has started a new-new normal & I too was held up in my concrete jungle routine yet I realized the cuk cuk music is not there in the morning so I went out & looked down & to my surprise (read as shock) the dead tree was no more, it was gone!  I didn’t realize it while walking from the road on the ground but from the top I could clearly see the grey black dried branches are no more there to offer sitting to the barbets & that’s the reason the cuk cuk music has stopped. That day on way to office I asked my building’s watchman, what happened to that dead tree, did it fall-down in rains, he replied, “nahi saab corporation ke loag aaye the, wo ped khatra ho gaya tha isliye tod diya” (that dead tree was dangerous so PMC people cut it down). Well, that’s it, agreed it was dead tree & its branches could have been threat to walkers from the footpath down is what some humans thought & the only logical way they had to deal with this threat is chop that tree as anyways it was a dead tree of some useless specie like Subabhul, right? Sad part is, in this world of humans, when some humans think something is dangerous then it’s for the humans & the solution is thinking safety of only the humans (is what we think) but who cares to ask what that tree was for the barbets or the hornbills or the bats, this is the reason of my sharing! We could have found some solution which would have avoided cutting of the “dangerous tree” from bottom as the tree seems pretty strong, the only threat was its branches could have fallen, so, all that was needed is trimming only the loose branches as well have some net (jali) under such tree for protection of passerby people! I know every morning the barbet pair along with its other friends like bulbuls & parakeets must be now resting on some other tree top as fortunately there are still many trees around but for me, my surrounding & mornings will never be the same without the sight of that dead tree & barbet pair sitting on it!

As usual, coming back to the core of the sharing, it’s our rampant tree cutting which is not restricted to just cities or towns but even once ever green hills in Uttarakhand also are not spared by, we the humans as recently wild lifer Mr Bittu Sahgal shared snap of town of Shimla (a popular hill-station town in Himalayas) & the tree cutting over there saying, “here is where I have been born & look what they are doing to my home town”!  I agree, we (read as humans) need space & for that trees needs to be cut but two things, why can’t we plan every structure accommodating existing trees & second, why can’t we plant big trees in every structure we build as the way we need space, the barbet pair also need their space, right? And who is going to remove dangerous human made structures which are dangerous for the barbets but just because they are small tiny birds & they can’t retaliate for we tagging their resting place as dangerous & chop it down, who gave us that right? I know, as usual I will be tagged as fanatic nature lover & I don’t care what I get tagged, I only know one thing, we must think of every single tree which is a life for many species & if we don’t do it then we have no right to call ourselves most intelligent specie but we will be tagged as most foolish specie, by that unknown power which is way above our chopping capacity!

Friends, every morning I see many of the birds taking refuge on the cables which are ample in our city’s sky traversing from one building to another & yet the birds are happy as they have something to sit on. But  ask this question to our own self, where you will like to see a bird sitting, on a branch of a tree (even dead one) or on some electric or 4G cable; because in the answer of this question lies the future of not just the birds but our next generations too & then only we will respect (and care) the dead trees also, till then god (only he can) bless the barbets & bulbuls of our city, is all I will pray!
