Finding a Right Sized Home!

 ------

He is happiest, be he a king or peasant, who finds peace in his home. … Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was a German poet, playwright, novelist, scientist, statesman, theatre director, and critic. His works include plays, poetry, literature, and aesthetic criticism, as well as treatises on botany, anatomy, and colour. And no wonder with that kind of qualities (read as knowledge) Goethe can describe the importance of a home in such simple words as after all a hope is something which is a priority (and a need) also for every living being & not just humans! Though it is the humans only who are the most intelligent species (self-proclaimed though) has not just learnt the art of home building but improvised it & started using it for commercial purpose too as barring humans no other species in the world builds homes for others. There are few examples of the species which encroach or occupy other specie’s homes but ever heard that a tiger sold his house to some other tiger or to a leopard as the leopard gave a better deal!

Sorry for the track I went on though this sharing is not about wildlife or nature but the reference is related to the topic i.e., real estate, rather homes & inspiration is a recent news I read which said post pandemic, the demand for bigger sizes homes has been increased in Pune! You will say what’s big deal, who does not want a bigger home, we all like a home bigger than which we have, even the tigers demand for more area of forest (bigger home, sorry again for wildlife reference) and what there to be a news in it! As a builder engineer, I have been cursed with the habit of not accepting vagueness (which is an inherent part of real estate actually), so I was intrigued with the term “bigger homes;” as, how can you define a home big or small? Means I can understand the language of sq. ft. but then there is no definite scale to say this size sq. ft. area home is called as small & that size sq. ft homes are big, which is not the case. I can understand the difference in numbers of rooms i.e., a 3 bhk home is bigger than a 1 bhk home but the news said bigger size 2 bhk or 3 bhk homes are in demand than the earlier. Here is the cliché (or say, “kida” in marathi) which made me to take on this topic about homes (I never like real estate word, why can’t they call homes, though real estate includes offices also, which we can call work places) as what size of a particular numbers of rooms is right size as bigger & smaller can be individuals’ perspective, right? For a person who has stayed all his life in town where he used to have a bungalow of his own (like my parents) & when they mover to Pune, they felt my 4 bhk duplex is small as the home has just one door to communicate with outside world while back at Khamgaon, their bungalow’s every room has door opening to outer world! Also, they felt my bedrooms are small as all it could accommodate is a bed, a wardrobe, dressing table, that is all, where is the place to put chairs in the bedroom, they asked me! I have to explain to them the concept of FSI, Saleable area, Bylaws of PMC & yes Budgets as well many other aspects (read as restrictions) in not being able to build a home like the one they have in the town, here in Pune. And then there was one more news about the demand for homes has been increased to maximum level in Pune in comparison to other similar cities, making the importance of understanding a right home (on budget as well location & area) for the buyers as well for the builders!

And today when I read that news again those memories flashed in my mind & then what should be the good room sizes, is the subject of debate since long in this industry as all builders & clients also want bigger rooms but then the builder wants to sale the flat at his rate while the client wants to buy that flat in his budget, this is where the definition of good size of rooms starts changing, is the fact! And this is why I do not want to differentiate the rooms sizes of the numbers of rooms or the planning of projects on good size or bad size but right size homes, is the right term! And for that first, as a builder you must make your ground work, here I mean study of the market as well surrounding development (lol, that is a joke, I know) which will make you understand what can be the right size home for a particular location. If you are confused then let me make you clear, real estate is a very local product for which the scale can change not just town to another city but within a city like Pune it changes as per the locality for e.g., a 2bhk home at Prabhat road can be of 1200 sft (all areas saleable only) while a 2bhk flat in suburb like Ambegoan or Sus can be of 850sft & both can be right at their respective location. This is because of the needs as well spending power as well lifestyle of the respective market the right & wrongs has to be decided! Ideally speaking when it’s a 2 bhk flat then Master bed room (with attached toilet) can be of size 12 ft x 15/16 ft in high end locality like Prabhat road while the same can be 10’6” x 13” in suburbs & the scale can be repeated to all the rooms. As a master bedroom however low budget flat it may be must be able to have a Queen size bed (5ft x 6 ft) to accommodate a couple, with a wardrobe of 4 ft width & 15” depth, a 2’6” wide dressing table & a moving space of 2 ft minimum around the bed sides with a passage to attached toilet door, this is right size even for a budget flat or say MIG (Middle Income Group). And if you extend these dimensions for a luxury flat then anything beyond 12 ft in width & 16 ft in length will be wastage of space (read as money) for the builder or the buyer, yet it can’t be tagged as bad size as some may like it & afford what they have liked!

On the same criterion, we can decide right living/dining sizes, as nowadays many families prefer not to have TV in the living area but in respective bedrooms which allows you to reduce living room size & use that extra sq. ft in the bed rooms to accommodate the TV. Yet by me it’s a wrong plan as a bedroom is for sleep & you can have a small TV in case someone (usually the house lady or elder members) wants to watch TV while there are guests occupying the living room! But again, for this you must study the lifestyle of the people you are targeting as your prospective home buyers & then design the flat which only will make you able to decide the right size of the flat! For the most important areas of the home also we are too ignorant & they are toilets as well kitchen as we think more numbers of toilets are bigger flat or bigger size toilets. Most clients ask me about fitting a bathtub or jacuzzi in the toilet which needs a minimum 6 ft width & 9 ft length, for a right size of both these units. And most clients end up using the bath tub or jacuzzi only once in a month making it the wrong toilet size as nearly 350 days out of 365 days the space is unused! Right toilet size is 3 ft x 4 ft shower area, 2’6” x 4 ft commode & 2 ft x 4 ft for wash basin, for budget flats toilets, making minimum length of toilet as 7 ft & width 4’ 3” & maximum you can extend this as 5’ 6” x 8’6”, anything beyond this is waste (I am referring to 90% of the homes, 10% are always exception, i.e., super rich, lol)! Again, there is a debate about whether living dining should be combined or kitchen dining should be together & again my answer is the same, study your own lifestyle. Dining Table in kitchen area where house wife cooks by herself will be left with less space for movement & then if there are frequent guests for dinner then it’s embarrassing for house lady to work around while guests eat! But if there is a house maid in the home & you don’t have many visitors for dinners then you can have dining with a kitchen, so living will be much cleaner & simple to manage. One most important aspect for the builders as well as home buyers, never go by the furniture layout shown in the presentation drawing by the sketches but confirm that the furniture is shown to the scale of the flat’s room dimensions! Means if the dining is 8’ x 6’ then how it can accommodate a six people dining table even that is shown on the presentation drawing, is the question you must ask, which many home buyers don't & then it's too late! As well in making the furniture fitted, we often neglect cross ventilation, another aspect in right size flats which both, the builder & homebuyer are ignorant about!

Along with right size home, the building also should be of right size i.e., outside of your flat, & here our (read as clients as well builders too) ignorance is at its best as nobody ever asks questions like how much open area is there around the building or what size of space is available on top terrace (supposedly kept common), what is size of gym or club house, what are common passages widths etc. Because, right from the car turning into the parking lots to manoeuvring your furniture through common passages, all these things also matter a lot when you buy a flat in a right sized building! As at least 14 ft wide driveway is a must for turning of the car into the parking lot & this can be 15 ft also for mechanized parking. As well passages width ideally must be 5 ft depending up on the length to be covered it may increase & this is for residential buildings! And if you are wondering where this right size if applicable apart from all these things, then for lift cabins also it is applicable as I have seen people squeezed in the lift cabin which are of inadequate size or waiting for their turn to come to hop in the lift, that is why all these sizes matters & unless you ask these questions you won’t know whether you are getting a right dela or wrong deal! As well do mind right size definition comes with right dimensions of the rooms also along with planning of these rooms, as then only you can utilize the room properly for your furniture layout, as 100 sft room can be 10’ x 10’ & 100’ x 1’ also, but can you use 100’x 1’ size room ever, here lies the answer about importance of a right size home!

As an engineer I always think, the home buyer is the key person (read as family) to decide right size of the flat which doesn’t happens as we Indians always buy even vegetables (or shares) riding on emotion or speculation & a home is also not exception to this “law of buying”! that’s why high time for the home buyers to understand their exact needs of which even budget can be the part , but then only you will be able to choose a right size home for yourself! As a right home is never an accident but its outcome of study, knowledge, planning & innovation all of which needed to be done by both sides entering into the deal, so go ahead, define your needs & choose your right size home!

Dhoni, an Ever Going Story !!

-

“A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves” … Lao Tzu

“I Don’t Mind Repeating Everything.” …  M.S. Dhoni

Jadeja swiped the ball on leg side, it beats the fielder on fine leg & before the ball touched the boundary rope, a sea of yellow erupted in the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmadabad & the commentators were shouting in excitement, Winner of IPL  2023 (sorry, Tata IPL), Chennai Super Kings for record fifth time & Mahendra sing Dhoni did it once again, the impossible! Actually, in that entire match, barring stumping of Shubhman Gill (will speak about it in detail later), as a batsman, Dhoni was a failure, & winning was possible by Jadeja as well some hard hitting by rest of the players yet everybody was chanting only one name, MSD! This is magic as once again it’s been proved that in any war it’s not the weapons but the hands which hold that weapon that matters! Going ahead with MSD, it’s not even the hands holding the weapons but the brain of the General who makes those hands able to use those weapons is what wins the wars, this is why Dhoni is not just special but super special!

Well, I know it’s just one IPL trophy & if crores of Indians love the game of cricket, then probably equal numbers either hate or don't follow this game is equally true. But the way crores of Indians hate politics (even bjp) yet they love or respect Mr Modi (same way it’s been of Late Indira Gandhi), the analogy is same for Dhoni when it’s about individual image (you may call it as brand), this is why Dhoni is special. We all know about his popularity & those who follow cricket must have watched all CSK’s matches & those who don’t follow cricket have no interest in statistics so I will skip that part & put forward why this sharing! It’s not about the greatness of Dhoni or records he has made or been part of, as we know most of it but it’s about why he is so special or great. Again, this part also has been shared, written about on many platforms but then success stories have many dimensions & who knows which dimension can make someone understand the story better or say an easier way so that somewhere someone can take that path, that’s why this sharing. And then I am diehard fan (or follower) of four things, Movies, Super Heroes, Animation & Sports, that too team sports more, because individual game are interesting but they don’t need or produce leaders & it’s the leaders we need when we want to grow or progress as a society, that’s why team sports are important as they give us leaders! Take example of Tennis, I love the game & badminton too, here we have greats like Federer, Djokovic, Nadal & in Badminton also we have our very own Sindhu & Saina as well greats like Lin Dan they have won millions of fans but & are wonderful sportsmen/ women yet what they do on their respective courts is their individual skill & when its game like cricket )even if just ten or twelve) countries may be paying it, yet it’s like organizing an army in any game, this needs a great leader which only can make the army win or say play consistently great!

Ok, if it’s so & figures are important then, even the Mumbai Indians have won IPL for five times & before Dhoni, Rohit Sharma who is our current Indian team’s captain also has done it, still why people feel Dhoni is greatest, that’s why this sharing! As, few performances or say characters you can’t bound by figures or records, especially when it's the captain’s role, as that way when I started watching (listening is the right word as in 70/ 80’s we were not accessible to TV) the era was of Gawskar & Kapil Dev. If you take a look on the names of the greats as an individual players contribution then starting from Bedi to Kapil Dev to Tendulkar & Dravid to Virat Kohli today, we have many of them in cricket & speaking about popularity then Tendulkar is God for this country for more two decades, so was Gavaskar yet why Dhoni is above all of them (no offense) when as an individual player he is way below on numbers, that’s why this sharing! Even in present IPL if I ask you to name a special MSD innings then there is hardly anything you can remember & yet this IPL will be remembered as Dhoni’s IPL for sure, this is special which no name in the above list was able to achieve, Some will say its social media genre & commercial aspects of the game & that’s true to some aspect but then it was Gavaskar who first shown advertising money to cricket by joining Siyarams’ ad & the how my genre can forget Kapil Paaji’s, “Palmolive da jawab nahi” wala shaving cream ad. So, commerce has been part of Indian cricket for pretty long period & only that aspect can’t save you from going down in the memories of the masses rather ad world is brutal & it runs behind only the performance & still Dhoni’s magic is intact even when he has been retired from international cricket for more than two years now, to analyse this magic, my sharing!

Ok, coming back to IPL 23, indeed many hates IPL yet its most money generating popular league game now across the globe is a fact we can’t ignore & it indeed has given platform to thousands of youngsters to be on the big stage, which wasn’t possible earlier & then in football to tennis there have been private tourneys which are more popular than official inter nation tournaments is equally true. And how we can forget it's only under Dhoni’s captaincy we have won the T20 & One Day wala  world cup. As well do mind, the football legend of today Messi also was able to make his country won the world cup at the dawn of his career while he became great by making clubs, he played for to win the various leagues around, so by me, which team you play for doesn’t matters as a sports matter than name of the tournament yet this doesn’t mean to take away shine as well pride of playing under country’s flag, do mind! If now you are in sync with my thought process about Dhoni, then let’s move ahead and take a look at players & their performances in this IPL because however great a captain you may be yet if the players doesn’t perform then you can’t win the matches is a fact. All first top three wicket takers were from Gujrat Titans, last year’s winners & this year’s runners up, more to that no bowler from CSK is in first five of maximum wicket takers! There is just one name in first five batters in this tournament IPL from CSK & he too is at number five. Amongst all the teams CSK’s players average age was maximum & more than that except Ravindra Jadeja who have been out of international cricket for nearly one year due to injury, there was no player in CSK team who was playing at international level from any national team. Ben Stokes was there but due to injury he couldn’t play a single game & Dhoni himself was not fully fit with knee injury. With all such statistics not even, Dhoni’s diehard fans were ready to believe that CSK had any chances this year & the team was next to bottom on points tally last year!   In such a situation with such a team you win the trophy, this is Dhoni!

First & foremost, Dhoni is very different from all our other greats, only Kapil Dev can be in his league on using natural instincts but then unlike Kapil, Dhoni has a cold-blooded calculated mind which acts like an army general & uses it with extreme ruthlessness! Because if on one hand Dhoni can believe in his old soldiers & makes them get going then on other hand, he is very clear whom to use when & even his best lieutenant Sir Jadeja, he can keep aside from using making him fume, that’s why Dhoni is special! Dhoni knows he neither have any geniuses’ gifts of playing by himself like Sachin or Sahewag nor he has technique like Rahul Dravid but he has something no Indian player has got in such ample quantity, extreme street smartness of the game & self-belief which has developed by testing his leadership metal on the heat of people’s expectations! CSK was always been hailed as a squad which doesn’t change their playing team even after getting defeated repeatedly as it’s like ocean waves which keeps returning back again & again to crash on the shore making the strongest of the rocks get broken under their persistent attack! This is what we witnessed, Gujrat Titans have beaten them three times consequently & yet Dhoni refused to change the playing squad even when it was qualifier & final, this belief in the players makes a huge difference in the mindset of the players. Though this is a calculated risk as with already beaten by opponents the players are eager to give them back taste of revenge & in the process performs their best, knowing this psychology makes Dhoni special! This is why a team with no big name & with no special performance can break the teams like Gujarat Titans & RCB which have star players. CSK was like a pack of wild dogs hunting a big bison which even a tiger is afraid of taking head on for hunting, this is what makes Dhoni special! This IPL he used all his street-smartness to hunt down the teams & his pack responded because he believed in them; every wicket of the opponent's team was planned by the leader of the pack & so was the way the team batted or fielded! May it be one or two wickets to every bowler or twenty or thirty odd quick fired runs, collectively they literally bleed the opponent teams which surrendered eventually by bleeding!

And then Dhoni has come from class of the society with which billions of Indians can relate to themselves, this is something like Salim Javed did with Big B in 70’s where the script was about a young man who doesn’t have any good looks like a hero which you can relate with yourself & he using just his anger & mind, takes on the entire system, the masses just loved it & made him Super Star! Here in the cricket its real life but the script is same, a young man with no special talent of game gives away govt job , dares to play a game which billions have played in their childhood & not just survives but keeps on beating teams after teams by gathering other commoners from various parts of the country & helps them to become star by themselves & yet having the smartness of keeping himself in shadows instead trying to take all limelight on himself, this is what makes Dhoni super special! This he displayed once again while receiving the trophy post winning IPL 23, he called Jadeja who was key to the win & Rayudu, who has declared his retirement before the final & made them receive the trophy, how many captains can do this, this is what makes Dhoni special!

This is something which goes beyond any tag or team & that’s why whichever ground Dhoni’s team was playing the team used to get support from the fans, a scene which is rarest in any game! In concluding statement post final match, the commentator (I still love to watch & listen Hindi commentary) said, “timoke shaher hote hai, MSD ka pura desh hai” what more honour of any player there can be than this fact & may be that’s why Dhoni with tears in his eyes (again a rare thing) refused to announce his retirement by saying “playing one more time will be my gift to the fans who have given me so much love”! Amongst all the matches whenever the camera was covering the crowd one scene has gone viral, a girl holding a poster which said “MSD take my life but keep playing for next twenty years,” it does brought tears in my eyes as there have been great players & there have been greater fan following but very few are capable to carry burden of this love & expectations that too for so long, which Dhoni has & that’s why he is super special! Time is the biggest & strongest enemy of every living being as it makes you age but it's not about getting defeated by the time it’s about how hard you have been to get defeated even to the time, is what makes you special, & on that scale Dhoni has already defeated the time also! On the personal note, I will be grateful to the time for testing Dhoni so long as his entire story was & is like a school for me which has not just taught me how bad a captain of my own life I am, but how much good I can still become & tomorrow even if Dhoni stops playing, his story will never stop from playing & inspiring millions, which is why he is supe super special!

Tipeshwar, Hidden Jewel of Wildlife!

-

If you cut down a forest, it doesn't matter how many sawmills you have if there are no more trees… Susan George
Susan Melody George is an English film and television actress. & I always admire even the actors & actresses of Hollywood (which are supposed to be not much known for their intelligence or intellect) as not only they are aware about many social aspects of the society but are vocal also to comment on them. Of-late in our country also wildlife has become a fashion & page 3 paparazzis are happy to click actors (actresses more) visiting our forests in designer attires & forest gears & cover their byte saying how they care for wildlife & they find peace blah blah! Agreed, a few of them may be genuine but most of them do it because wildlife is "in thing', among social circles of our  country so everybody wants to ride this wave & get publicity! On social media also if you see the reels & likes, anything related to tiger is viewed more is the fact so be it! But when it comes to actually thinking or knowing about the forests & species, then I doubt how many of our so-called Stars are actually contributing to the cause!

Well, sorry for the distraction but sometimes things do go in my head & I agree not all those who visit forest love or are passionate about the forest, so forgive me & let’s move on to the subject of this sharing which till last decade many won’t even know that it exists! Yes, I am referring to Tipeshwar Wild Life Sanctuary & trust me barring some real tiger & wild life lovers even today there aren’t many who visit this place often. Tipeshwar is a small sanctuary spread over some 150 sq km area in Yavatmal district & is on the extreme southern part of our State, & from the gate of Tipeshwar Sanctuary, Telangana State’s border is just thirty kilometres away. But then only a fool measures wildlife or forest or habitat on some scale of sq. kilometres, it’s the richness or say the life which lives in these lands that matters most & on that front Tipeshwar too is unique. As usual it took tiger sightings to make the people (read as wild lifers, so called & tourists) know this small piece of forest has rich wildlife & tigers are seen here frequently. More than that it is an important corridor which connects Central Indian tiger habitats to southern forests such as Bhadrawati Project tiger. In recent times a tiger from Tipeshwar is known to travel to Bhadrawati & then travelling way back to Dnyanganga sanctuary in western part of Vidarbha & again returning to tipeshwar, thus completing journey of nearly 1800 kms & that’s amazing (as well luck too)! Like Umred Khrandala, which connects Vidarbha’s forest to Central India, Tipeshwar forest can be called a gateway to the south for the tigers.

But unlike central Indian forests which are much greener & dense, these parts of the State are dry & its rain shadow types region & no wonder maximum farmer’s suicides are from Yeotmal district, such is social situation here. This makes things much more difficult for the tiger as prey base is less & cattle killing can be dangerous as its source of living for the humans around. Still tigers are increasing (that shows the resilience of the species) & outcome is even outside of sanctuary there has been many tiger sightings, even to the extent that one tigress (name isn’t there) is supposedly having six cubs at present and she is surviving on the cattle kills completely. And to avoid human conflict she is smart enough to kill the cattle & drag it deep within forest, finish the kill completely & then only come for another kill, thus all the unpleasantries such as eating the cattle kill are done far away from human eyes, making the hatred towards the tiger a bit less of the cattle owners! Only if you speak with the locals (guides/ drivers) then you come to know such wonderful stories in & around the forests, is what I wanted to share, once again! The terrain of Tipeshwar has lots of teak wood plantation which was earlier under social forestry but thanks to the tigers now teakwood cutting is stopped & the area is handed over to wildlife division of forest dept. For those who don't understand these terminologies, forest dept has been divided in many compartments of which social forestry looks after creating new forests which later becomes home for the increased population of wildlife species & not just tigers. This branch is very important as we can increase number of wildlife animals but where they will live is also needed to be taken in consideration as they don’t have some elected corporator or MLA which will allow them to build their homes illegally on any govt land & later regularize is as its their assured vote bank, so we the humans (sane humans) has to take care of building home for wild animals, that’s the job of social forestry!

Once a habitat is developed or identified as a wildlife habitat with presence of big cats or some apex animal then its declared as wild life sanctuary i.e., protected forest & then it is easier for forest dept to maintain or say control it as it gives legal power to the forest dept to restrict entry in such forests, which is what Tipeshwar is, in present situation.

Though the teakwood plantation here is young & rest part is majorly shrubs, yet the perennial water bodies in the heart of this forest is a boon for wildlife. As well the hilly terrain is perfect home for sloth bears & leopards, sightings of which also is a regular feature of this sanctuary.  Just like the lake in tadoba, here also the centre of sanctuary is a Tipai Devi’s temple & a lake nearby, which is the focus of activities. In three safaris as usual a tigress & her tiny cubs made us play, hide & sake game & we could not have a sighting yet a sloth bear we could sight & wild dogs, as there are not much grass meadows, prey base mainly that of spotted deer is less & tiger has to survive mainly on Sambar deer & domestic cattle around. As this forest doesn’t come under project tiger there are advantages & disadvantages too, such as private vehicles are allowed which is a menace for real wildlife lovers at the same time charges of tourism are much less nearly half of what tadoba costs! The guides & gypsy drivers are very enthu as they have realized their earning is directly related to the tourists yet we need proper training for them & communication skills as well support in any form (such as clothes, shoes, bird info books etc) as apart from wildlife tourism income sources are near to nil here!  While reaching to the gate you have to pass through a series of small villages (Sunna is one such) & you can feel the poverty around, in 2023 there are places where humans & animals drink water from one open tank, now you can imagine! I was with gypsy driver named Irfan & guide Sagar & both were extremely enthu to show us around & share whatever they know about the place.

Staying is a bit of a problem here as there is a recent posh resort opened but it’s for rich people & then there are some home stays, sorry to say but the home stay thing all around the forests in Maharashtra need to be upgraded a lot, on facilities as well our approach to the concept. Just making rooms available with some natives doesn’t mean a home-stay, this forest dept needs to explain the locals & help/ guide them to improvise or else tourists won’t come again at such home-stays! On such a background at Tipeshwar I came across Anant Heritage, a resort come stay place run by a local Shishir Kulkarni. This boy has done MBA from Pune & his family has a farm with ancestral bungalow near the park & instead choosing to make a career in Pune, Shishir upgraded his farm house & converted it into a small hotel/ resort. This may not be some great luxury place but it's clean, airy, functional, spacious, serves good local food & most importantly gives avenues of earning to many local youngsters!  As well he has redone the bungalow keeping the original design & specification which is worth experiencing than just seeing! We need to promote Shishir & his likes as these people are directly responsible to make wildlife tourism a success as if the visitors want to see the tiger but for that they can’t just be airdropped in the forests, they need good infra & thanks to Shishir, who in his best capacity helps tourists to remember their wildlife trips not just for tigers but for nice stay also!

Of-late, FB as well Insta is full of Tipeshwar sightings & this makes tourists eager to visit the place & have their share of those yellow black stripes but let me tell you something about wildlife, we all want to see the tiger & we pay for that yet if we are making mistake of expecting to see a tiger in every safari then frankly, we haven’t understood the forest in the first place! So, do visit Tipeshwar but not just for the tiger but to feel its heart which is wilderness, of which the tiger is one of the parts, adios with this note!

Kanha, Not Just Tigers but Much More!!

“If someone goes to forest & complains he hasn’t seen anything then he is blind, deaf & incapable of smelling; in short, is a fool’…

Well, name of the author of above quote I won’t mention as with this statement many around will be offended but I am completely in sync with the quote, that’s why I decided to start with it, however rude it may be sounding! I could have started with something nice & beautiful as the subject of sharing is closest to my heart i.e., Kanha Forest & that way l love every forest I have been to yet among the number of the kids, one is always dearer to the mom, so is Kanha for me! And somehow there has been a big gap in visiting Kanha at leisure rather biggest as I have been going regularly to Kanha from year 2000 & that too more than once in a year yet Covid has interrupted the travels & though last year I had been to kanha yet it was mere four safaris trip & three out of them have been washed away due to rains (in May)! But then weirdly it may be yet rains, clouds have been part of my kanha trips in the last eight years whichever season I may visit, maybe that’s what global warming is! The problem is not just with me, as I have already shared in previous writings, entire Central Indian wildlife tourism has been hit by these changed rain patterns & its effect 9read as ill effect) on tiger sightings! I have seen tigers & leopards in the rain. Sudden cold weather & clouds makes these predators relax & sleep wherever they are resting in the day time which or else the harsh heat of summers would have made them move for waterholes & chances of sightings becoming more, which is not happening!

This is why I used the quote as my driver, who is a veteran of Kanha, was telling, “sir, Punase tourist kafi kum ho gaye hai aaj kal”. The reason is distance of Kanha from Nagpur, it takes minimum five hours (at safe speed) , the fall of Go-Air, making only one flight (that too very odd time) option available to commute from Pune to Nagpur & with such weather reduced chances of tiger sighting due to the vastness & greenness of Kanha forest! And on top of it, there is tadoba which has more chances of tiger sighting & it’s just two hours’ drive from Nagpur rather with Samrudhhi Mahamarg option, one can drive in strati ten hours to tadoba from Pune, making it easier as well cheaper for group of six people! All these are my logical reasons but something Kanha authorities must do if they weren’t to stand by their slogan i.e. “Aao Bagh Dekhkhne”, as weather is one reason but its age old a bit negative attitude towards tourism is the main reason for lesser tiger sightings which directly affects tourists interest to visit the forest! I know it’s wrong to visit forest for just tiger yet even the Govts promote the forests making wildlife tourism tiger centric is a fact, so why to blame only the tourists, right? Again, no problem with wildlife tourism being tiger centric is my personal view which I know many conservationists as well forest officers & true wild lifers, very few though will frown on & comment, “sanjay, tumse ye ummid nahi thi”!  But then, in a country with a human population near one fifty crore there are just 3500 tigers, spread over some lakhs of sq kms, that makes a tiger special & people respect (or say wish to have) only the special is a human tendency! And to see a tiger they have to visit the forests which again is indirect help to the wildlife only, is my point.

Because if we want to make the tourists see the tiger then first, we have to save its home as well as manage that home in such a way that tigers will have enough space to survive because in a way tigers save the forests & forests save tigers in return! If you are confused then let me explain, in any jungle if there is no big predator such as tiger then the herbivores will grow too an extent where they will be a nuisance to the neighboring human settlements (farms) & as there is no fear of tiger humans will finish of the herbivores animals as well the forest itself. Presence of tigers in a forest keeps humans away from such forests to some extent, as well the forest in return protects the tiger by giving it the place it needs to survive & grow in numbers! Here is where Kanha if is a boon for tigers on one hand then is a curse for tourism from the angle of tiger sightings as tigers have huge space to take solace & not needing to come in open for the sighting of the tourists which pays thousands of rupees just to have one look of the tiger! Here is where forest depts’ role comes in to play as with all due respect with beauty & magic of the kanha forest, most tourists doesn’t come to have a look at its vast expand, green landscape, the golden barsinghas & all such (well, there are like me which do) but for the tiger & then only they can admire the rest above aspects. So, to open up new routes as well considering the new buffer & relocated villages areas, the forest dept always can work out a way by which tiger sightings can be increased in the tourism zones as well not breaking Supreme Courts norms (again something to be debated but next time), which is not happening, is a fact. We can think of making more water holes along the road as well closing down a few routes where tiger sightings are not consistent & creating new routes where tiger sightings are happening, so that more & more tourists can see the king in his true way!

Another aspect is about the timings of the parks & keeping it closed during all the monsoon as a park as big as Kanha, definitely some routes & zones can be operational throughout the year, so why not keep the park open all 365 days, have you even heard that Disney Theme Park is closed for holidays, indeed some rides can be kept closed for repairs & maintenance but at large entire park is open all the year long as they mean business! Here again wild lifers & conservationists will say, this is nature & not business & my reply is then close it forever as nature is the same in all the seasons, why keep open in winters & summers then, right? Guys we are talking about conservation & we should be open to all aspects, study its pros & cons & then decide, instead jumping to some conclusion by using denying mode! A big forest like Kanha makes the livelihood of thousands of people around it in the form of many jobs, services it generates via wildlife tourism & its these people which, actually are part of the Kanha forest & are its protector too! So, if by making a tiger more visible a bit all these humans are going to make a better livelihood for themselves, then what’s harm in it, is my point! All over the world, wildlife tourism has been used as the best tool for conservation of wildlife, unfortunately only in our country it considered as taboo & outcome is people which are real protector of the forests often ends up at receiving end of the adversities, only because we do not act with balancing approach when its wildlife conservation, is my point of sharing! Forests like Kanha have immense potential for not just wildlife tourism but to make people know about the beauty & importance of the forests as it's like a show -window of nature, all we need is to display that window in the right fashion.

Coming back to the sightings (not just tigers), though it was May end yet thanks (is it?) to the untimely rains, the grass was green along with the evergreen Sal & on that canvas the golden Barsinghas is a sight which one must see by himself than me explaining about it. We encountered tigers a number of times but an interesting thing was (and good also), increased sightings of the sloth bear in Kanha. Many tourists don’t take serious cognizance of this weird animal’s sighting but it's rarer than sighting of a tiger in the forests & this time Kanha helped me to tick my one more wish list (greedy, forests make you) & that is to see a sloth bear climbing on a tree! You will laugh but in day time even to see a sloth bear in the clear is difficult so to see it climbing on a tree in the open, is not something you get to witness every day. But this time on a morning ride in meadows when we saw a sloth bear on food hunt approaching a banyan tree, I was super excited when its suddenly tried to climb that tree though as the girth of the tree was too big for the sloth bear in half way it gave up & got down, a funniest sight it was! Actually, we need to make tourist aware about such sighting’s importance, the guides do try but so much focused the tourist are on the tiger that while we were engrossed in sloth bear sighting few gypsies passed by without stopping as they were behind tiger sighting & didn’t want to waste their time watching some silly black furry animal climbing on the tree! Here even if the guides do try to tell the tourists about animals like sloth bear & their importance yet its unawareness of the tourists that they are interested in seeing the tiger first, this is where importance of tiger sighting comes into picture. As once any tourist has seen the tiger then only, he or she is open to know more about the wildlife’s other aspects & I understand that mentality, point is forest dept also should understand it!

We also witnessed a wonderful sighting of a tigress named Neelam which was on hunt despite an injury to her front leg for her small cubs, & while I started writing this blog, a news came (on FB) that Neelam was seriously injured in a fight with another tigress. Even with the vast expanse of Kanha, space is a big problem with increasing numbers of tigers & territorial fights are a major concern for survival of the tigers, something we need to act upon fast! At the same time relocation of prey (deer) in lesser prey base areas along with creating more water bodies, so as evenly distribution of the tigers will be there is also required & fast!

To mention in the last, we handed over winter-gear for Kanha forest's guides for the winters ahead which are harsh in these Sal forests. Every year thousands of tourists visit our forests & get rejuvenated by being in nature & fill-up social media with their clicks by the camera’s worth lakhs of rupees but hardly anybody thinks about contributing for the people who make these moments possible for us. One of the guides mentioned this, “saab yaha full day safaripe ek din me loak lakh rupayya kharacha katrate hai par humari jaruratoke bareme bahot kum loag sochate hai”, mind it friends, if we want to make places like Kanha forests to survive & that only will define fate of the tiger; adios, with this note…!
