P V Sindhu, Gopichand, Cell Phone & Social Media!

-
“Social media not only snatches your time, but it also teaches you attention deficiency.”... Neeraj Agnihotri.

--
Well, I remembered this quote not to slam social media, neither I am of the types who loves bashing social media & Internet & use by themselves the same extensively; I remembered this quote as I came across this wonderful story which has been has been narrated by one of the best sports journalist Boria Majumdar about our Badminton World Champion P V Sindhu & her coach Gopichand & the pains they took to earn Olympic Medal! I have been always fascinated by such stories as these are not some writer's imagination, these are real life stories of the legends& these stories reminds us, no success is a fluke but its outcome of sweat, blood, thousands of hours spent in training, discipline, determination to success & most importantly trust in each other i.e. the player & the coach! The time freeze as it’s a world of two, the coach & the player with one target, the Medal!  We often ends up naming some player who are our idols for the poor performance & ignore the efforts they have put in behind those few hours of the game (sometimes even seconds, ask Usen Bolt). Indeed success or failure even after such hardship is part of game but while saying this sentence & accepting failure with smile one must be sure with himself or herself for giving everything one has to achieve the target set!

Of-late we often come across discussions about use of social media & distractions it creates, especially with students as well young players (read as achievers). This story is eye opener for many as it’s not about banning use of social media, it’s about understanding social media's role in our life, as a student or even as achiever when we have already grown up! An addiction is bad may it for a youngster or for a grown up as it distracts you from your goals that's why it’s been called as addiction! Social Media may not disable or damage you physically the way smoking, drinking or the drugs do yet when you have set some target then your challenge is time & it’s this time which gets lost if not health when you get hooked to social media. It’s not bad to be social but it’s definitely not just bad but worst to let others define your identity by their likes & smilies! Like any other medium social media is a boon if used as a tool but then a gun or a sword is also a tool to win the battles, provided in right hands with right head to control those right hands!  Today I know even grownups hooked with social media & indeed many of them are successful also in their respective professions yet imagine what they could have done with this time they spent on social media as you can be just alone & do nothing, try it, its wonderful feel! We have forgotten to write (most of us), to paint, to sing, to dance, to admire a birds flight or to admire sunrise & many such small real life things under the tag of “I am busy” but we have enough time to check every single forward & re-forward the same which comes on our smart phone! We don’t admire our kid dancing in-front of us but we react with an emoji to some unknown fools absurd clip on Tik-Tok, we don’t get happy (if at all we realize) if our old mom or dad admiring us for our achievements but we are unhappy for not getting enough likes for our FB post, wow & yet we call ourselves grown-ups & expects our kids to keep off from social media!! And again,  if you are using social media to share your creativity then its fine but if you are judging your creativity by others likes then its defeat of your creativity as to post something is ok, to count likes, is you are addicted & any addiction is bad, is my personal opinion! And more than what & why you post on social media is what defines whether you are addicted to social media or not! Someone can use it for commercial purpose, it’s perfectly fine but what a student or a player can commercialize by social media at the cost of the time which could have put in training (read as studying) is something he or she must ask to himself or herself as well the students parents & teachers also should ask this question to the student! And let me share something which my genre too has faced & so has every generation, there may not be social media when I was a kid but then social fear factor was always there, like a trip is going to some place & most students are going, I knew my parents can’t afford it, so just by not going to the trip isn’t going to make me anti-social, is what I knew then also! Same is with play time, when I had exams (due to my engg studies erratic schedules) always when most boys from other fields had free time it was my study time & I too have this feeling of getting tagged as anti-social as I used to be forced to sit at home & study while entire colony’s kids were on play-ground! Well, I had my fights with my parents on this & I am sure thousands of others boys & girls must have had their own fights over this social aspect of student life! Every time when some kid has been refrained by the parents or teachers (read as coach) there has been friction & at that time you think your coach is the worst human being on the earth & most of such kids when grow up & look back, has thanked their coach for behaving the way in which they have behaved!

Today when I look back, I too laugh at my foolish concepts of being social & well I must admit today also I am a student when it’s being social! Today nobody can tell me do this or do that, I have access to unlimited internet data & allowed to be member of any social platform (thanks to the fifty years I have put behind) yet I ask to myself every time, what I really need in life, some likes on a B or Twitter on my post or some time for myself to set a new target in the form of a new challenge! I think till the time this question haunts me, I am ok to use the social media but the day I will be without any target or any challenge; that will be end of me as an individual mind, well social media has found another victim that day! And to set new targets, new challenges doesn't mean loss of peace of happiness, it’s just a sign that you are giving justice to your aliveness which you can do happily also, isn’t it?...

And then everything has its right timing as to my knowledge even today PV Sindhu is one of the most active personality on Insta & Twitter & inspires millions of kids by her posts but only when she is not having any tournament ahead, this is what Gopichand was successful to make her understood & she is successful to handle the tool named social media! Here is that story…

--

PV Sindhu had just lost a hard-fought first round match at the Australian Open (2015) against former world No. 1 and London Olympics silver medalist Yihan Wang. But coach Pullela Gopichand wasn’t flustered.

Rather, with her sister Divya in Australia, Sindhu spent the next few days partying.

Gopi in fact temporarily removed all restrictions on food and late nights.

Those were the last few days of enjoyment. Soon after returning to India, Gopi handed Sindhu a letter.
It was the first in their long association and listed the ‘dos and don’ts’ for the next eight months. Among them was a clause that a 20-year-old youngster would have to surrender her phone. Talent, he argued, needed to be honed to win an Olympic medal and he was determined to leave nothing to chance.

“Yes, I was a little worried about the phone because among all my students she is the fastest to respond to a phone message. But it was a distraction we could do without,” Gopi says while l ..
while looking back at the period that eventually made the legend of PV Sindhu.

“I didn’t think he meant it seriously. Definitely not about the phone .. How could I not have a phone! And yet when he gave me the letter, I instinctively said yes. So when I looked back in the evening there was nothing much I could do because I had already agreed to the conditions,” Sindhu laughs.
Gopi was leaving nothing to chance. He had a full programme in place not only for Sindhu but every bit for himself as well. “In our house it’s always Vishnu (son) and Gayatri (daughter) who decide on the food. I really don’t mind. But not so then. For those few months, it was about me, and me only. I wanted food of my choice because I was afraid of falling sick and missing training. It would mean Sindhu missing training and such things weren’t permissible,” Gopi states with a smile.

By the time the duo reached Rio, Sindhu was in top physical shape. But Olympics aren’t only about being in good physical condition.

Pressure, nervousness and control of the mind was key to success. Sindhu, understandably nervous, was playing in her first Olympics and started poorly against Michelle Li (round two) of Canada losing the first game. She did play a good second game but in the third, she was down 1-4 at the start. Her Olympic dream was in the balance and Gopi, yet again, was  .. staring at a barren Games. It had eluded him in 2000 when he was in the prime of his career and it was threatening to do so yet again.

For months, Sindhu had been told to play one particular shot. In practice it worked but in match situations, she just wasn’t able to get it going. And now all of a sudden in Rio in what was in Sindhu’s words “the moment it all changed”, the backhand cross court defensive block came out. Balance, poise, positioning — it was a perfect stroke. As perfect as .. one could hit it. Even Gopi was surprised. Something indeed had happened and Li was soon shown the door 21-17 in the third game.

“That’s the stroke we had kept practicing for months ahead of the Olympics. It was one weakness I was determined to overcome and pushed Sindhu to play it for hours and hours. It would take opponents by surprise and if they didn’t attack here knowing she would play the defensive block, I was confident Sindhu would be in control. If you watch the semi-final in  Rio Okuhara tried it and bang — Sindhu played the stroke for a winner”, Gopi said with a smile of contentment.

“Gopi sir made me stand in the middle of the seven courts in the academy and screamed at me. He wanted me to shout and be aggressive. I hated it. Hated him and what I was being asked to do. And I started crying but wasn’t able to shout,” smiles Sindhu as she looks back at what all she did with fondness.
But here she was in Rio playing the best she had ever played. Beating the super talented Tai Tzu Ying wasn’t easy and Sindhu did so quite comfortably to set up a quarter-final against Yihan. “On the morning of the match against Yihan, Gopi sir told me I was doing it for India. As we were going into the arena that day he showed me the massive queue of people making their way to the venue and there were Indians who had travelled to Brazil to see me play. It was very different from anything I had
experienced before,” says Sindhu.

“Her warm up wasn’t the best before the quarter-final. Her shoulders were tight and I had to do something to get her going. You don’t beat a former world champion by just turning up and this was the Olympic quarter-final,” says Gopi.

Again, contrary to expectations Sindhu beat Yihan in straight games to make the last four.
While entire country was celebrating, Gopi was starting to coil up. Feel more and more tense. Sindhu wasn’t assured a medal yet and Gopi just didn’t want to end up fourth. “I’ve always been one to soak in pressure. In the final against Carolina for example, I never felt any pressure. Even in the world championship final in Glasgow in August 2017, I was calm. But not on the eve of this semi-final. I didn’t want Sindhu to go through what I had suffered. And continue to suffer. I wanted that medal  .. remembers Gopi.

He didn’t sleep a wink that night. Paced the room and kept thinking. He just couldn’t let the medal slip away.

“When I got up in the morning Gopi sir was all ready to go out and train. He had showered and was waiting. I had this feeling he hadn’t slept.
While he never said that to me I could sense he wasn’t his usual self,” recollected Sindhu while smiling at Gopi who by now was starting to look a little sheepish. “And when I won the semi-final I turned to Gopi sir and saw tears rolling down his cheeks. While I was delighted at making the final, to see him cry made me understand the enormity of the achievement.” And for Gopi this was his moment of reckoning.
The pain of Sydney was finally behind him. India had an Olympic finalist for the first time ever and Gopi had finally achieved his dream. “Yes, the job wasn’t done yet. But at one level for me it was done. May be I was wrong because I did feel satisfied. May be if I hadn’t we could’ve planned the final differently. God willing that will also happen,” says Gopi.
“The tears were genuine. Sindhu could now leave the sport a decade later with an Olympic medal. It was hers forever and there was nothing left to chance anymore. All those months of effort had paid off and I was seriously happy,” he adds.

The duo had done all sorts of things in Rio. Constructed a net with towels in their room in the Olympic village and practiced.
Practiced in the morning and again late at night. They had simply given it their all and left nothing to chance as they had set out to do in Hyderabad when Gopi had taken away Sindhu’s phone and stopped her from eating ice cream and biriyani. Gopi was the guru with Sindhu his protégé and the Olympic medal their moksha. You can watch this candid sharing by Sindhu on U Tube link below about restriction on use of Cell Phone…

BNHS, Birds, Express-Way & Us!

--
The future is in the skies.” Mustafa Kemal Atatürk
Further he says…“Look at the stars. It won't fix the economy. It won't stop wars. It won't give you flat abs, or even help you figure out your relationship. But it's important. It helps you to remember that you and your problems are both infinitesimally small and conversely, that you are a piece of an amazing and vast universe.”

Kemal Atatürk, commonly referred to as Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, (Well, our History books introduced him to us as Kemal Pasha) was a Turkish field marshal, revolutionary statesman, author, and founder of the Republic of Turkey, serving as its first President from 1923 until his death in 1938 & it’s with character like Kemal Pasha, a country with dessert is now one of the best in Middle East making it as bridge between east & west! Today I remembered his words about wild life courtesy a news about seminar by BNHS regarding birds & their passages in sky & I know most people don’t even know long form of BNHS (sorry guys but that’s fact), Bombay Natural History Society, a pan-India wildlife research organization, has been promoting the cause of nature conservation since 1883. Its mission is conservation of nature, primarily biological diversity through action based on research, education and public awareness. Its vision is premier independent scientific organization with a broad based constituency, excelling in the conservation of threatened species and habitats. And I have taken these words from their web site though I know them & let me tell you very few organizations live with the words which they have used as their mission & vision & BNHS is sure one of them, when it comes to nature conservation. And what’s more important about BNHS is they work more on conservation of birds & not just tigers which most other wild or nature conservation organizations thrives for. And reason is simple tiger means attraction of media & tourists means money, name & fame while not many cares much ( read as give a damn) for the birds may it be a eagle or an owl or even a sparrow! And BNHS doesn’t just organizes seminar but backs up researchers, promote the youths to take nature (habitat) conservation as their profession & creates (read as fights) to make every specie (off course other than humans) survive on this planet & let me tell you it’s not an easy job as the enemy is none other than the humans only & powerful ones!
Ok, now in the recent news about a seminar regarding water bodies & the migratory birds I read, that BNHS is taking up task of conducting detailed study about birds passages & their way from their breeding grounds to the base (mean their origin). There are such studies done about birds’ migrations but not much in our sub-continent (read as India) & BNHS believes that such studies will help us in conserving the bird’s habitats as well make their migration journeys easier. For a moment I couldn’t believe that such fools still exists in today’s world & please all the nature lovers, don’t get angry & stop reading my sharing further or start typing me abusing reply for my above comment, keep patience & read further & then you are free to act at your will, is what I will say! So, after reading the complete news I believed such fools does exists which are ready to spend for studying about some unknown (or known, who cares) birds species & how they travel, why they travel, where they travels & then how to make their travel safe! As the news said this study will help we, the humans understand about difficulties in the travels of the birds & we can assist by accommodating this study in our planning (read as development) & thus will make birds journey safe & easy! I was speechless, thoughtless & whatever you call less with the noble thought of BNHS! Because I remembered another news in the very same news-papers as well social media postings about one single road (read as human passage) named Mumbai-Pune Expressway & the death toll it has achieved (humans deaths) along with damage of the vehicles & millions of hours wasted of equal numbers of users of the expressway (humans again) & the studies which has been put by not just govt agencies (they are best at it actually, study) but even by the individuals (read as fools again)who has lost their family members & friends on this passage we call expressway due to sheer negligence or bad planning of the makers i.e. Mai Baap Govt which also supposedly responsible to keep this passage in proper condition to make our journey easy & safe! And I have seen the fate of all such studies about express way & safety measures & yet this passage keeps on taking lives every day of the users (humans) as the system which we call govt ( we also are part of it) considers all such studies a waste & the people who studies & makes reports as fools!
Now tell me all my nature lovers, a system which doesn’t care a bit about passages of the humans for their travels & turns a blind eye on all the studies made to make humans travels safe & easy, can such system will ever care for travels of some birds (many of which are not even worth of eating) & improve its planning to make these birds journey safe & easy by accommodating (read as accepting) outcome i.e. suggestion of some study by researchers of BNHS? This is why I used the term as fools after reading the news & let me clear even if you are thinking I was wrong well, this is sarcastic way of putting your point, this is the way Punekars do it, so I used such tone & language, I am sorry if I have hurt anybodies feelings by calling BNHS as fools! But then issue is not what I call whom or saying sorry, that’s not going to change the scene around us, is what we have to fight. As in continuation of this seminar by BNHS there was one more news, that Maldhok (Great Indian Bastard) named bird’s habitats has been declared as Protected Lands by Green Tribunal as well Environment Ministry. Well, for non nature lovers (though nobody accepts this openly) it’s a  big bird & a rare one, as only one fifty numbers of Maldhoks have been left in the country which has human population of nearly one twenty crores, do I need to tell how rare (endangered) Maldhok is now! And let me tell, Maldhok flies (travels) to great distance for their food & the reason of their deaths is power lines, wind mills, mobile towers, high rise structures, oh yes aero plane’s flight pats also & many such. All these structures which are signs (some will say need also) of our development actually becomes hurdle in the path of flying Maldhoks which collides with these structures & lose their lives! And then we build canals, roads, industries, railways which cuts through the grass lands which are home for Maldhoks & if it’s not enough we use land for farming & we build dams sub-emerging thousands of hectors of land (read as home for Maldhok like birds) & what not, so even if a Maldhok is lucky to survive in flight from power lines or wind mills, it doesn’t have a home to breed & feed so end result is death!
And this is the story of not just Maldhok but thousands of species which have wings but that’s all they have as they don’t have hands, legs & a brain which we have to make our travels safe & easy. For thousands of years birds, animals, insects, fish are travelling around this planet happily by using their natural passages on land, in air & in oceans, for their basic needs like food & breeding, which nature has provided them (yes fish too, see the classic animation movie Finding Nemo) & has survived these travels & grown in numbers even when the humans were also around. But mainly in last two centuries, if our so called science & needs (read as greed) which has made our life happy (is it?) but it has made lives of these thousands of species miserable as neither their travel passages are safe nor their homes & the only tag they have got is Endangered! Because, we pollute as well obstruct Sky which is passage of birds, from their one home to another & we don’t spare Oceans & Antarctic from polluting them, making life of fish & other species not just difficult but impossible! And on all such background it’s the efforts for saving birds by studying their life style along-with fish, reptiles, insects and many more, from BNHS like organizations which remains as oasis in the dessert or a cool breeze in hot summer or a warm shelter in snow fall or a dry hut in hail storm, which in actual is the last hope, is all I will say!
I am not saying don’t make development or progress but then while doing all that don’t make BNHS type people fool is only I am appealing. This is a thankless job & there is no money in any thankless job is a bitter fact. If we can’t or don’t support or help BNHS as well its love (read as care) for animals & birds then at least respect their study, is what we can do. And that is possible only by accommodating their studies outcome in our developments in such way that no Sanjay Deshpande will dare to laugh at them as fools! High time for our urban planners to make biodiversity as focus of our planning before it’s too late & not just keeps this aspect of planning on paper but execute it also. As for namesake there will be space for BNHS study’s outcome in our development planning & on ground, as we all know what happens even with illegal structures here in this human-centric country! Unfortunately the birds & fish & snakes can’t build illegal habitats or don’t travel without ticket or by using fake passports, like we are expert at it!
Or else one day will come where God Read as Nature ) will tag we the humans as Endangered & that day there will be no BNHS to make study for our comfort & ease, mind it!

Real Estate's Package Named Pain Killer !!

--
“The proper function of a government is to make it easy for the people to do good, and difficult for them to do evil.”… Daniel Webster

Daniel Webster was an American statesman who represented New Hampshire and Massachusetts in the United States Congress and served as the United States Secretary of State under Presidents William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, and Millard Fillmore. Well, you don’t serve three US Presidents' in succession unless you have clarity of thoughts about why a govt exists in first place & this is why though we might be a largest democracy in the world yet USA still remains the best democratic country as people like Daniel are part of that democracy (well, until now at least). With announcement of RS 25,000 crore packages for real estate (read as home buyers) industry our govt surely has shown its willingness to make lives of people in real estate industry easy. Though many will say, which people, is the question as why help builders when they have enough money accumulated over the years! Well, builders have ample of (real loads of) money is sweet myth which common man believes firmly & I won’t blame him because not just the lavish life style of most builders we have witnessed over the decades (thanks to Page 3) but media also has portrayed it through TV serials, Movies & now web series, all of these shows a builder is someone with pockets full of money & an attitude which comes with it as well viilinaish characteristics i.e. going to any length to earn that money. So why govt now has to be so generous to help such community instead, can't they help with this money to the millions of needy common people who are living either in rental homes or illegal homes as they can’t afford a good legal home of their own! And again I don’t blame these people for such view as indeed we have millions of homeless people & this is exactly govt wants to do, to give these people their dream home & that’s why the package of Rs. 25k crores !

Indeed a noble gesture by the govt & on the face intention of the govt is very clean & simple as thousands of projects (read buildings) across the country are stalled due to recession (well we don’t say that word officially yet) making builders bank corrupt & damaging worst to the people who has invested their life time earnings in these stalled projects. So the govt intends to pump in this money in all such projects & save the dream of owning a home of the common man. Wow, great, noble, superb & etc etc but (sorry but this but don’t leave me ever) as usual just the way they say “behind every successful man there is a woman’, it’s an age old ghisa pita dialogue now, the newer version is, “behind every successful business empire there is a crime”! Again many of my fellow friends won’t like it yet on these lines I have formulated a thumb-rule, “behind most (not every) noble thoughts there is a selfish motif” & our govt is not exception to this thumb-rule! Again many will say so typical Puneri negativenss & I can’t help it as when this particular package to real estate news made an head line in most news papers & media by our Hon FM, share market responded in bullish way (what else) & developers cheered govt (bound to be) & we conveniently forgot many other headlines few of them are like, Vodafone (mobile network giant) CEO hailed govt policies & blamed the same for making its nearly impossible to do business here. One more was few of the big names in IT industry have announced huge cutting in jobs (read as existing jobs). Then one big name in food processing (Parle Industries) also announced removing existing employees, making a big stir in food industry. And then there are news of backbone of the production i.e. automobile industry’s sales hitting every quarter new low, Along with now routine (sorry no offence, we are immune actually, accept it) news of farmer’s suicides as well weather damaging the crops along the country! All above news were sidelined under the real estate package news & yes there is one firsthand experience also which I had, my younger son was working with Amazon who has done his graduation in administration & his batch of some fifteen members out of that nearly thirteen are from engineer faculties & he was telling me they are holding on this job which is a non0engineering job because they are not sure if they leave this one they will ever get another!

If you are wondering what I am trying to tell as we all know, business is not so good & there are job cuts around, so what? Rather that’s why the govt has declared package isn’t it, can’t I just see brighter side of the package thing? I do see, but there are some more headlines, now from our Smart City Pune,  such as its six months, PMRDA (Pune Metropolitan Regional Development Authority) which covers nearly entire Pune district for its development planning, mainly Urban part, has not received a single drop of its due (read as demanded) water supply quota from the irrigation dept. And then there were news about PMC not getting its GST rebate from State Govt’s finance or whatsoever dept. And then we are immune to reading news of many govt’s infrastructure projects stalled or are going on at snails speed such as Pune-Satara high way work, Bhama-Askhed water pipe line, Mula-Mutha River (are they rivers, plz don’t ask) beautification again the list is endless. Ohh, can’t complete this list without adding few more names (read as projects) i.e. Garbage depot for Pune city & New Domestic Airport & The Ring Road, around Pune (actually there are two ring roads & it’s not joke) & The HCMTR (High Capacity Mass Transit Route), actually I am bored writing this long-form for ages! And then there is news about Judicial Dept (again govt) not appointing technical posts at NGT i.e. National Green Tribunal causing delay in several cases which are important better (read as Green) future of this city as well  society, though sometimes it’s not so yet we need it to keep a balance between development & environment is also a fact.

And lastly there was a news (I mean any day you open news paper you get to read about it) about a Talathi of Mulshi i.e. Pune  which is lowest rank of revenue dept, getting caught while accepting bribe for making entry of just 5000 sq ft on 7/12 (ownership document of land) of some piece of a land. And there was news, how some Aviation (NDA /Lohagaon airports) Authorities’ NOC is required for new developments in & around Pune & it has made hundreds of projects got stopped! There are many many, more such news but you will say is this my sharing or reading a news bulletin, so will stop reading news headlines.

So this Rs 25 k crore may seem a big chunk but looking at the volume of stalled real estate projects & land as well other costs its peanuts is what any small time developer will also tell you. But ok, even if it’s a good start, issue is how we (read as govt) will be identifying such needy developers because every project has different reasons & not all are right reasons. And in many projects its greed of the developer which has made the project in trouble so who will be competing such projects is the question & in many cases changed govt policy is a problem, what about such projects! Best way will be fund this money to the Banks & ask them to  monitor every individual project or make a separate body (not again though) & give this fund to such body & ask it to analyze individual project so as the money will be used for the right cause & for that first decide the norms or criteria of the right cause! Or else this package will be restricted as usual to few lucky ones only and we know, what criteria for being lucky in this country are!

And now coming back to our govt’s package thing, how all above news are related to this package announcement, simple it’s all above such news & the reason behind them is what has caused the need of this package in first place! As real estate i.e. a home is costliest product (read as legal home) yet it’s a basic need, so just the way some money package couldn’t stop suicides’ of the farmers, no package can save real estate, mind it & accept it! Instead try to work on all above news headlines & their root cause is what I will suggest. A financial package is like shot of pain killer for the accident patient but what we need a surgery of the damaged parts & then physiotherapy, to make the patient stand back & walk, on his feet! And the patient in this case is real estate which is dependent on every above news item. A man or a woman will think (read as can think) of buying costly product like home only when he or she is financially stable means has a decent long term job surety or a good running business or a healthy professional earning & for that all above factors are a must which our Mai Bap Govt is either ignoring or neglecting & trying to wrap it under the package named over-coat! But do mind, (read as bosses in govt) a guy can’t remain naked under the over-coat, he needs other clothing also as then only he can sustain harsh winter. We need infrastructure, we need proper policies regarding developments, we need one window clearances for all type of industries (not just real estate), we need a corruption-free system (read as govt) & we need all above things fast, as the patient named real estate is dying & just some heavy pain killer dosage named as package won’t make him live, mind it!

Dubai, Oasis of Efforts & Hope!

--
“We may not live for hundreds of years, but the products of our creativity can leave a legacy long after we are gone.”… Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Flashes of Thought.
With this quote from Mr. Maktoum on screen, “Dubai of Future” Audio Visual ride in the exit chamber of Dubai Frame ends & in this one sentence is the secret of Dubai’s success. Well, is it a success, is what many will ask with raised eyebrows yet in my seventh visit in last six years to this city, I will still vouch for Maktoum’s vision which in a way is Dubai’s vision too! Time & again I have wrote about Dubai & just the way every time when I come back from some forest there is something new to share which I have learnt or say felt after visiting the forests & same is the feeling this city gives me! I think in these words lies my reply to every raised eyebrow & then if you don’t share what you have learn then it’s a waste & more than that whatever you have seen, learn or felt you must get in to practice also & of course I am referring about good things only which Dubai has lot to offer AT every visit!
This visit which also isn’t different though the focus was Abudhbai about which I will be sharing my experiences separately (well, don’t want to dilute my Dubai love actually), as usual the Rolex watches on walls of the long passages to immigration greeted me once I was out of the plane, reminding me by time Dubai may be one & half hour behind us but on development time frame its decades ahead of us! Out of airport on roads which are as spotless as floors in our flats & hoarding free barring few which were showcasing Mr. Maktoum’s facing told me Dubai’s Independence Day is close by & its 48th Birthday of Dubai which actually is UAE i.e. United Aram Emirate’s independence Day but so synonymous name Dubai has been to us that whenever we think UAE or say middle east all we think as Dubai (well, more bout it in Abudhabi’s sharing) & that’s success of Dubai is what I think. Just like Bislery brand in mineral water, as we ask to some shopkeeper, “Bhayya ek bisleri dena” & he also promptly gives mineral water bottle whichever available with him which we don’t mind!  That way artifacts uncovered in the UAE show a history of human habitation and transmigration spanning back 125,000 years & till some few decades back scene wasn’t change a bit from the days of these artifact’s but then the hoardings thanking Mr. Maktoum for today’s Dubai were not fake (the way we are used to see our leader’s hoardings by their chamchas’ sorry karykartas’) or just to please him but tribute to his as well his team’s efforts to make Dubai a brand by itself for the world. And then there were Dubai 20-20 posters on the airport which are like posters of some Sci-Fi movie & my curiosity kept increasing like arrow of speed on the taxi’s speedometer about what I am going to see this time!
And then next three days (too small time) went like an hour, to start with Sheikh Zayed road which is main artery of Dubai has again some new giants (well, sky-scraper word is too small) i.e. towers rising high in sky & in the forms which made the engineer in me at shame for the structures I call buildings here! A lot has been spoken about this Dubai 20-20 & we are yet in 19’s but Dubai is all guns firing for the World’s Business Summit which they will be using to show case the city as best investment place. A major shift I had observed on Dubai airport in my last visit was on floors of the lobbies leading to exit from the terminal there was written “Welcome to the Happy City” & now everywhere I got to read a message saying “Welcome to the International Hub for Innovation & Design”! This is the smartness of Mr. Maktoum (and his team) I like & respect most as first you made this place in a shopping hub & made people around the world addicted for shopping by Dubai Mall, Mall of Emirates, Marina Mall & may such. Then you made people to come here & be resident by telling them this is Happy Place & build things like IMG Studio, Bollywood Studio, Burj Khalipha, Jumera Beach Island, Atlantis & many more for happiness of the residents. And now you know by just making people to shop or trying to make them happy, it’s not enough a city needs reason to migrate here & people will be happy & shop only if they have jobs (read as good earning) & that is possible only by Innovation & Design, key words of today’s future! Today’s future, one may wonder what I meant with it, well I learnt this term (rather thought of it) in this trip to Dubai. Our all mythologies’ & philosophies’ too (even my most loved Master Shifu from Kung fu Panda) keeps us telling live in today i.e. in present & not to worry about future. But here in Dubai, I realized you can live in today by working for future by what & how you work today, is what will decide your today’s future!
So the stage is being set for making all the big business houses in the world witness what Dubai can offer apart from shopping & fun, I would have been surprised if the progress of the projects which I have witnesses a bit slow in last few visits. The buildings along Sheikh Zyaed road are now ready for occupancy as well massive new developments are on just they were some five years back. One of the significant rather two of them are Creek Side development & Blue Waters! Every civil engineer must visit Blue Waters for sheer volume of development & the way it’s being handled. Its consists of Dubai Eye i.e. a Giant Wheel showing view of Dubai’s sky line & it will be tallest of its kind in world (needless to say that)! Its bit prolonged by Duabi’s standards yet the wheel will be inaugurated probably on start of Dubai Expo. There has been a lagoon created along with beach side promenade where people can have sea side restaurants & more to that book a private yacht & have party all night here. Can you imagine this is a Middle East place which we were looking down naming them most orthodox society & resilient to changes! One most significant thing is Mr. Maktoum understands just buildings, parks, malls, business centers won’t work as they will need infrastructure, physical & social both; that too is in full swing. Dubai’s main thrust now is on not the flyovers or transportation things but on public health & education. Dubai Sports city is operational already along Abudhabi road where every sport’s training will be given to youths & kids as that’s important aspect of education in Europe as well USA & even China; so if you want these people to come & settle here for their earnings you ought to provide them living standards for their family as per their needs! This is something our so called Smart City needs to understand & adopt as when we call people here to reside then are we thinking of what they need for living apart from salary & this is why Dubai is way ahead of us as it thinks about humans needs not just greed!
And one of significant aspect on this front is Dubai has become world’s food hub providing authentic food from every corner from the globe. When I say authentic it is authentic & not like the junk served under the name of Chinese of Punjabi which we get here every corner! As in Dubai if you have opened a Malbari joint then you will be surely getting some Kerali family to visit it & they will immediately find your authenticity, so you can’t afford to be fake when its taste buds! This one industry is sure booming as in the shopping malls I saw the food-malls full while the shops were waiting for tourists & credit goes to authenticity as well variety of the cuisines, Dubai offers to the foodies here!
Well there are few areas of concerns as even Gods are not spared from lacunas & one of it is climate change. Though it’s November yet just the way here we are yet to get rid from the rains Dubai too was waiting for winter & it was pretty hot & summer is bad for business here. Post 9am in morning the sun bakes up everything under him making any outdoor activity a No No for tourists & it does affect every front of Dubai from taxies to theme parks to shopping & eating outlets also! And if you want to know the scene on business front best way is to talk with taxiwalas or tour operators & small food joint owners in Dubai. Things are slow & post Diwali which is best tourism season keeping in mind Indian tourists, the foot fall is way below what it used to be & that has affected business. Deals are being floated at unbelievable rates for hotels & even in shopping malls. Somewhere the Vat of 5% has made dent of the trade & though tourists does get VAT refund (and real fast at Airport) yet I think the big trading houses are not happy, moving out there operations to other destinations. What Dubai needs now is production (well our country too needs it) as that is what will create more jobs & attracts people here. At the same time Mr. Maktoum must keep an eye on the services his creations are providing to the visitors as family friends of mine has very bad experience at Burj Khalipha where the mess created with the crowd made them come back without visiting “On the Top”, which is one of the most photographed monument in recent past. As it’s comparatively easy to become number one but most difficult to retain that place!
Will share an incidence before closing which tells the story of Dubai; I posted my snaps of Dubai’s development on my college group & my one friend commented why we can’t have even one such street here in our country’s any city or town while there entire city can be so clean? I replied it’s not the garbage but the person who creates the garbage is the real problem! At one of the Juice Bar I was buying a milk shake to take away & the serving girl filed my container & asked me to keep it on counter for a while. When I asked why so, when she has already filled my container, she smiled & said let the shake settle a bit so some more space will be there to fill it to the top as I have paid for the full glass & she won’t like it to give me even if it’s just little portion remaining! And she then filled the container till the hilt with remaining shake in the juicer & closed it with lid & gave to me! Need I say anything more guys, this is Dubai which tries to give its best to you always!
At the exit of Dubai Frame (from where I started my this sharing) you enter in to a lounge, here Mr. Maktoum takes you on a 4-Dimensional audio visual ride of what Dubai will be in next fifty years. Here a patient will be scanned just by making him sit in his home-chair & then robots will operate the patient, cars will fly & farming will be don’t on hundred storied building , schools will be virtual yet there will be real physical fitness training for kids by their skills & while you are wondering is this a dream, they show you the way Dubai was forty  years back & what it is today. Even after seeing this entire show if you still don't believe Mr. Maktoum yet one thing is sure you don’t doubt him or his intentions for Dubai anymore! As for speaking about me; thanks Mr. Maktoum for making me believe in efforts of a man against adversities, as that’s the best thing you sold to me in my this Dubai trip & without charging me any VAT for it!
