“I have learned, people will forget what you said, what you have done
but they will never forget how you made them feel”… Maya Angelou.
Maya was one of the
most versatile personalities USA has gifted to the world, a writer, actor,
awareness speaker & what not, but more than that, a thinker! And to start
my first sharing of the New Year 24, she was a perfect support to get assisted
by her above said words! Though the heading of the sharing is not what a
cheering start you could have wished for but then that’s what 2023 has given us
& you can’t change the past (or history) you can either learn from it or
burn it one sure way of destroying your future is what I have learned & so
was maya but unfortunately “we, the people” (I am deliberately not saying govt
or such) haven’t learned lessons from our past is the fact! Fun which I have observed with most men (read as men
& women) is, when a man gets succeeded then that success is attributed to
his hard work, knowledge, intelligence, self-made attitude etc. but when a man
fails then he blames every possible person or entity around & if no one is
to be blamed then its fate of destiny! That’s the case with 2023 as
a year & if you are confused then let me explain you, in the past year
numbers of tigers crossed nearly 3500 plus & India become the country which
has nearly 75% of the tigers out of the entire tiger population in the world!
Then we portrayed many initiatives by our govt (and everybody) on the
environment front & how much efforts we are taking for the same as well;
our population has crossed 150 crores & we will soon beat China on that
front also!
Well, increasing
numbers of tigers is a great thing as it needs efforts from the entire system
to make a tiger survive in the wilds & that is indication of healthy
wildlife. At the same time, many initiatives by our country for environment
(read as nature) conservation on world forums’ is a matter of pride as it shows
our good intentions & caring approach regarding the environment at large!
And then increasing population which our Hon Leaders (all of them) always boost
as our country’s strength as percentage of younger population is more in
comparison to western world as well average age of living (longevity) has been
nearly touched to seventy years, is a good sign of healthy India! All these
things we must celebrate & be happy about as achievements of 2023 &
there are many more “but”, this but is my soul of sharing (as usual) because if
you are happy with our achievements then have a look at these facts too! Year
2023 was the year which saw maximum numbers of tiger’s deaths nearly two
hundred plus (five deaths have occurred in the last week of Dec 23 only in our
Maharashtra State) all across the country & these are recorded figures of
deaths, missing tigers (Maya @ tadoba) are not counted. Then on the environment
front, nearly five of the cities from our country topped the top ten most
polluted air quality cities in the world, Delhi, our country’s capital tops the
list! Our rivers are the most polluted rivers among developing countries &
then our beloved Pune city which used to have pride for good weather but now
the citizens of Central Pune have to use masks while out on city roads, such is
the air quality here. Pune has 47 lakhs plus private vehicles & nearly 10
lakhs vehicles are in the city but have been registered out of the city, so the
total numbers of private vehicles in only Pune (not PMC or PMRDA region) is
half million plus! Imagine the kind of CO (Carbon Monoxide) these vehicles must
be throwing out every day! And then speaking about the population, the
so-called youths are unemployed & agitation is the scene in every class
about jobs & that’s the main reason for demand for reservation may it be in
govt education institutes or jobs!
Sorry, if I have started your new year on a negative note but why I did
so is, unless you accept the facts however bitter they may be , you won’t be
able to change them, right? If we are happy while we
celebrate Project Tiger’s Fifty Years success then we must think what next as
increasing numbers of the tigers is one thing & giving space to live them
is another & this is the reason why along with increase in the numbers of
tigers their death toll also has increased! Our
ever-increasing human population is directly affecting not just tiger’s
population but entire wildlife (read as environment) is at threat & in this
New Year we must pay attention & do something about this aspect about which
everybody is silent, is my point of sharing.
Tiger population (and their deaths) is actually index of wildlife &
it’s not just the tigers which are at threat but every-day right from leopards
to deer to rhinos to elephants & all such species are at extreme threat due
to our humans as we are literally eating out their food, drinking their
water & destroying their homes for our needs (read as greed)! And not just
wildlife, our 150 crores plus population needs space so we are destroying
rivers, lakes, hills , oceans & we are negating one big fact, land for
agriculture to produce grains for us also we are reducing! The year 2023 saw
maximum natural calamities right through the year which included landslides,
floods, extreme rains, or extreme dry patch & entire life cycle has got
affected & this is not just natural phenomenon, accept it! Outcome of our
ever-increasing population is, just like the tiger fights over territories
there are human territory fights also have started which is a warning sign
which 2023 has given as because fights over quota on caste basis in jobs or
education, what it is but territorial fights among the humans, isn’t it? As
on one side we are using masks for noise & air pollution & on the other
side we are welcoming New Year’s by music on loud speakers & Laser shows
& fireworks, what kind of society we are , I really wonder about it!
Though all is not that
bad, as two news caught my attention in the last week of the year-end
month & they were like a ray of hope, first news was about DRDO (Our
Defense Ministry’s research wing) has stopped their testing of missiles near
Odisha State’s Seashore to protect Ridley Turtles yearly nesting(laying eggs).
Second news was, a car got overturned in an accident in Tamhini Ghat (near
Pune) to protect a wild hare which suddenly came in-front of it, on a turn!
Both these news shows our intent & way as what a nation as well as an
individual can do to protect nature which is in a way like protecting our
future. Though I have full sympathy for the car driver in the accident which
fortunately remained unhurt, yet why you have to drive so fast from forest areas,
is the aspect which will be the second stage as at least he tried to protect
the small wild animal like a hare which is more important for me! We need many
such displays of attitudes if we want to make 2024 good for all & not just
a few lucky ones.
Friends, do mind, the New year won't change
anything for us as it's just a date on a calendar but it's you & me only
who can bring the change only if we decide to start that change from our own
self! And for that, one single small step by every individual is enough such
as following the traffic rules, planting one tree at least in this year &
making it live, not throwing garbage in open or in the rivers, & most
importantly to raise your voice in whatsoever possible way against every wrong
thing happening around you, I think if we take a pledge for such cause then
that’s true way to celebrate the New year & making it more better for all
the society, adios with this note!
