Jungle Belles; Wildlife, by the Women for the Women!

-

“If you think what one woman can make the difference then you are sure a fool”…

If you go through social media & groups of wild life photographers posting their wonderful wild life images, 95 out of 100 such wild life images are clicked by men & most celebrity wild life names are of male gender! Though we forget wild life is not just about clicking photographs of tigers but a lot lot more than it & to understand wild life first one needs to visit the forests or else how you are going to love them & if you don't love forests how you are going to conserve them, is something I always ask to the people! And on such background if a wife, a mom, a sister, a girl-friend, a grand-mother starts visiting forests, gets enlightened about its importance, then only she can tell (read as share) about forests & what these forests needs from us to survive, to her brother, son, husband & friends & there only is some hope for forests as well thousands of species who are endangered & on verge of being extinct by some son, father, husband or a friend ( read as men)!

And then another side is this can be the best mental as well physical break for a woman when she visits some forest far away from city life as well home's daily chores, rejuvenating herself for her infinite duties! This is why Hemangi Vartak & Aarti Karve's new venture Jungle Belles is special as its women are focused & making them aware about their duty not just towards forests but towards themselves! And when they both decided to start Jungle Belles, which will be a service to provide the platform to women to make them visit wilderness exclusively by themselves i.e. ladies special you can call; myself, as their friend as well as a wild lifer, was happy to be their little support via Sanjeevani i.e. my firm. As, here are two women who themselves come from the so-called elite (read as upper class) part of society & who could have been just happy by visiting forests by themselves & post their outings on Insta /FB & get applause from their friends. But they decided to do something more as they not just love forests but they want to convert their love for forests in a better way & actually do something for the forests & what better way than making other women gets exposure to forests by their venture! And if you want to make a woman love something then first, she should know that thing, a simple funda which most men never understand & that’s why maybe it took these two women to come up with a concept like Jungle Belles!

Well, Jungle Belles doesn’t just take women to forests as that’s just one of their activities but it brings forest to your door steps, that too in city like Pune through series of webinars where many well-known wildlife experts, who shares their work as well passion about wildlife with audience (mostly women) so that the bond between women & forests gets builds! Jungle Belles runs this year-long activity in Pune for wildlife lovers rather, more for non-lovers (of wildlife) by which a platform is being created between the various personalities in the field of wildlife & people in the city, to make both these fraternities gets exposed to each other. And this includes forest departments senior people who actually work for protecting forests like Mr. Nitin Kakodkar, IFS, PCCF (Wild), wildlife filmmakers like Nalla Mutthu & Bedi brothers, wild life photographers like Vikram Potdar & Mohan Thomas & the list will sure soon have some female names too as there are such though a few yet; in fact the Jungle Belles took off at the hands of none other than Vandana Chavan, MP of Pune who is known for her environment awareness!!This way many women & youngsters has been connected with the wildlife & of-late many girls are willing to make wildlife as their career, thanks to Jungle Belles efforts for the same! Point is, even if you get the forests to a woman’s door step yet getting that woman to her door steps is also very difficult, especially when the cause is like wild-life. Because unfortunately that’s not priority for most women & when a woman is invited for some wild life program then she comes out with every possible reason for not attending it (even it may be a holiday or week end); such as, kids have classes, its holiday & husband wants me around, I have to attend some family function, I don’t have transport arrangements, my maid hast turned up today, my in-laws are not well & the list is just un-ending! And this is why we are unable to protect forests & natural habitats as women power has not yet joined hands in this movement! This is where the path of Jungle Belles concept wise may look golden & great, but it’s rougher & tiring than any jungle path i.e. making Jungle Belles as a career, because its most difficult to make women know that the key to save the forests or nature is in their hands only! Still, Hemangi & Aarti (in support with Anuj Khare, then) dared to take this path & are on with their fight, this is what makes them special!

It’s now four plus years for Jungle Belles since they started & while Aarti has gone back to USA for her family needs, Hemangi is running the show single handedly, displaying what just one woman can make a difference to wildlife awareness! In last four years, the financial balance sheet aspect of Jungle Belles may not be great but look at the contribution it has made to wildlife, right from taking over hundreds of women to the nature & making them able to understand importance of wildlife & their "Me time" to helping people around the forests in every possible form (even in Covid times) to conducting fifty plus wildlife webinars with experts in the field (Women too) to making wildlife film to conducting presentations for school kids about tiger conservation to  Women only wildlife photography contest for successive three years, list of the works Jungle Belles is doing is ever growing, & this all without any big support or any brand sponsorship , only with dedication & will of few ladies!

Today while entering in year 2024, Jungle Belles team has been working on many fronts for wildlife awareness with very little financial support as by making choice to work for only Women, it has scarified a lot on earning front because wildlife tourism is very easy (and dear) for men but as I mentioned earlier, there are thousand plus reasons for a lady for not to attend even an online webinar & Jungle Belles team being women by themselves, not only understands but respect every such reason! We know, a lady has multiple priorities & she herself is at the last position in that list yet JB team doesn’t give up & keep working to make women understand wildlife, so they can pass on that awareness to their kid & entire family, which is our only hope for the wildlife ahead! There has been support to JB in pieces & bits (except Sanjeevani Group) but unfortunately when its financial sponsorship then wildlife, that too for the women only, is never on the agenda of many corporate companies, is a bitter fact! Though there are exceptions such as Magarpatta City, which helped to create a wonderful documentary film about Wildlife of Pune & which got first prize in recent shorty film festival, then there has been Sony & Chitale Foods, who has helped a times,  yet its high time where we must  contribute as much we can to support Jungle Belles awareness initiatives as not because it’s about wildlife & by the women but it’s for the Women only & that’s a great daring step, as one aware women can change entire family’s mindset, which is the need of today’s world!

Project Tiger, Wildlife & Hope!

---

“Hope is, believing in the ability of the young minds to make this world a better place…”

The quote is by me & that’s what I felt when I looked at  faces in front of me, when I finished my sharing about Tiger Conservation & its importance for us in front of some five hundred plus students @ Maharashtra Public School, Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad)! If you feel this is one more  sharing about my tiger passion filled emotions then you are not wrong but it’s not about what I feel about the tigers it’s about what these kids felt after my presentation about the tigers & that’s what I thought should reach to as many people because their emotions about tigers was being reflected in their questions & it was flowing like a flooding river or tsunami of questions will be a better term to explain. Before that let me tell you a bit background about it, we at Jungle Belles (an organization run by Hemangi Vartak & Aarti Karve & their team) works to make women & younger ae kids of all age group aware about wildlife & carries many initiative one of which was an audio video presentation about our national animal i.e. Tiger, on occasion of  fifty years of Project Tiger celebrations (Please google if you don’t know what Project tiger is). Under this initiative JB team goes to different schools/ educational institutes  (on their own cost) & explain about Project Tiger & importance of conservation of tigers & wildlife at large & make them aware about not just forest depts’ or NGO’s efforts but these kid’s responsibility towards the wildlife conservation cause!

Recently JB team got an invite for the presentation from Maharashtra Public School @ Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad), I took opportunity to be part of the team  for two reasons, one was as Hemangi the leader, was unable to travel for her home front duties & second was it’s a challenge for me as the audience was some five hundred plus kids at one go  with age group ranging from seven years old to fifteen years i.e. 2nd std to 9th std, at a time! To my surprise  Principal Ms. Ipsita Chaudhari herself has visited many forests & was  very enthu about this exercise & so was all other staff. I won’t bother you about the presentation as you can war=tch it on YouTube link & the end of the sharing but what’s most interesting thing about the event was the flood gate of questions post presentation! Not only the kids (all of them) were silent & keenly listening & watching the presentation (a rare thing) but very eager to ask their questions about the tiger & trust me some of them bowled me totally, though this is how we learn through teaching & I thought of gathering these question-answers as the sharing to make others also realize the power of young mind in conservation, so here we go…

1.Can you make a tiger your pet?

This was cute & only a child can ask this question, I told yes you can make a tiger pet but if you love & care for your pet & want it to be happy then you should do what it wants & a tiger wants to be in the forests, so you can become a forest officer or make career in wildlife & then you can make tigers pet & be with them all the time & take care of them by protecting them!

2.How do you get inspired for tiger conservation?

This, I replied as I am from Vidarbha, where forests & tigers both exists since long, so I was lucky to be able to see a tiger in wilds as a kid & that’s why fall in love with it as that’s one sight which rarely someone won't love & you get inspiration from what you love to see, that’s how I got my inspiration about the tiger & this is what they too should go to the forests, to get inspired!

3.Are people over Taobao not afraid of the tiger, doesn’t it eat them?

This was a tricky question as how do you explain to someone to love something which eats you up, right? I told them in Aurangabad everyday two/three people die because of two/four-wheeler accidents & in Pune the figure is five to six people every day but do we stop walking on road or driving a two-wheeler or a cycle, no was the answer! I said, the same way, we take proper care & learn to live, that’s what we do with tigers, we keep safe distance & follow rules of the forest then we don’t have to be afraid of the tigers, is the way which Tadoba people have learnt!

4.How do you measure the age of a tiger?

Tigers age is measured from the stripes on its body as well its pug mark & it’s done with constant surveillance in the forest!

5.Why doesn't mother tiger (tigress) fight for her cubs with another tiger (male) when it kills her cubs?

Super interesting question as I told them about male tigers killing cubs from other male tigers. I replied, tigress is the bravest mom, just like their mom & she does fight with all her strength  even with  male tiger which is bigger & stronger than her, yet sometimes she has to retreat for her own life so more cubs will be born!

6.Why can't a tiger run fast?

This question was the outcome of me telling them that a tiger gets lucky once in thirty plus attempts in hunting deer or wild-boar! I said, its sheer physics, had tiger been able to run fast it would have been light weighted & then from where the strength to kill the deer or wild boar would have come to it, that’s why a tiger is heavy & can’t run fast, that’s how nature designs every species, with a purpose!

7.How big in size Maya tigress is?

Here ,I fumbled for a second but used judgment & said nearly 11 ft from nose to tail, my guess & judgement & weighed approx. 170 kg!  ( And I was right to much exact)

8.Is it compulsory to name tigers in the forest?

This was an outcome of curiosity as I was mentioning names given to the tigers in my presentation. I told them , it’s important to tag the tigers for keeping proper count, though forest dept recognizes tigers by numbers such as T1, T 12 etc. but locals give them the names depending on their convenience or similarity with something. Like Mataksur is the name given to a male tiger because his head was like a Matka (A big clay pot)!

9.Why don’t tigers live in packs or groups like lions?

This was a super question & the kid may not know as this question is the subject of study as it relates to survival instincts of the tiger by nature! Though I said, its individual species nature & the kind of forests we have doesn’t permit that behavior for big animals like a tiger! It’s easier for dry & savannas type forests where lions live that way!

10. When we are saving a tiger but they only hunt us, how will we protect them?

This is again a curious mind about the basic conservation & miss-concepts or myths as I replied, it’s wrong that the tigers hunt humans because we are not their first choice of food, it’s mostly by accident or because of some inability to hunt natural prey a tiger hunts humans, which they understood!

11. How many tigers are there in the world?

I told them, nearly five to six thousand tigers in the wild but it’s a guess & it’s a tough job to count exact numbers considering the vast expand of forests as well as limitations in conducting census of tigers! For e.g. a Siberian tiger has territory over 1000sq km, so it’s nearly impossible to measure all the tigers in the world!

12. In India, which State has the most tigers?

This, I told them again a guess but Madhya Pradesh is number one & our Maharashtra is second while Karnataka & Andhra-Pradesh follows.

13. If there are twin cubs and both are the same then, how do you identify & name them?

This was so typical of a kids mind that made all of us laugh but it was a genuine question! I explained, as the cubs grow, their stripes pattern change & just the way even human twins have different fingerprints the same way every tiger has different stripes pattern which makes us able to differentiate between them!

14. How to capture a picture of a tiger? Does the tiger observe you when you click its photo?

I told them you have to be patient to capture a picture of a tiger & that’s what forest teaches you as there the things happen as per the tiger’s wish only & yes, a tiger is very much aware always of you clicking its photographs & doesn’t mind if you keep the safe distance from him all the time!

15. In the future how will the tiger survive?

This question was the epitome of all the questions & asked by a ten-year-old, I could only reply, guys that’s why we are here & you all are the answer to this question as you all are the only answer we have for the survival of the tiger! If you understand the importance of tigers & feel it must be protected in its natural form then yes tigers will survive, is what I believe!

With that answer, I concluded the session but there were still nearly thirty plus hands still raised, wanting to ask the questions! I requested Principal Ipsita madam to collect their questions & email me & will be sure to reply to them in my best capacity & I left the school premise with a very happy & satisfied feeling & with probably the most important tool for the conservation of the tiger & that is, Hope!

--

After I came back to Pune, to my surprise I received few more questions on email which the school got in their suggestion box, here are they & my answers…

* Who was the first person to research the tiger?

Sanskruti Pawar (5th A)

Unofficially, Mr Jim Corbett was the first person who studied tigers in the process of his job of hunting the man eater tigers nearly hundred years back in the Himalayan forests. This he did not as academical study but what he experienced while observing the tigers he noted it all down which is true even today as behaviour of a tiger. Later many people such as Dr Ulhas Karanth, Dr Valmik Thapar, Mr Rajesh Gopal & such studied tigers with moder techniques & now we know much about the tigers that’s why we were able to grow tigers’ numbers!

* Why are tiger females only to protect the cubs?

(5th C)

Because that’s in the nature of the tigers, that’s how nature has designed them as they don’t live by family so till the cubs don’t become independent someone has to take care of them & the job is done by the mother as she can feed them with milk when cubs are few months old & then later her territory is smaller in compare to male tiger so she can hunt in better way. At the same time mom tigress also don’t keep the cubs with her after they become two years old & more & shoo them away from her area!

* What is the difference between Royal Bengal Tiger & Siberian Tiger?
(5th A)

Royal Bengal tiger is found in India & is smaller in built with area up to fifty sq km as its territory while Siberian tiger is the bigger by size & strength with nearly five hundred plus sq km area as its territory & lighter in colour than Bengal tiger as to get camouflaged on the background of snow! Siberian tigers head & jaw is also bigger with more fur on its skin for protection from cold over there.

* How many tigers are there in the world?
Trisha Lahoti (5th A)

In the world as I mentioned in the lecture there can be or may seven thousand plus tigers & to my knowledge only eight countries out of nearly one hundred eighty countries are lucky to have tigers , they are, Russia, China, Indonesia, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Bangladesh & India! As I said its very difficult to count all the tigers even in our country with modern technology, so exact figure may vary by ten to twenty percent!

* How to join your trips?

You can connect to Jungle Belles at their email id as well contact numbers, junglebelles.pune@gmail.com / http://junglebelles.com  / 07756081922

* What is the approximate age of all tigers?
Viraj Motinge (5th C)

Tigers approximate age in wild (in forest) is fourteen to fifteen years & in captivity (in Zoo) its eighteen to twenty years.

* Some people tame tigers but, is the seller doing a good thing or a bad thing?
Shaikh Saad Ahmad (5th A)

You can’t tame a tiger as by nature its wild animal, there are few cases such as in a monastery in Thailand there are tamed tigers but its said that they are drugged. In our country to tame a tiger or to keep it in private ownership is legally not allowed & it’s a serious crime.

Greed, Real Estate & Fate of the City!

--

“Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed.” …  Mahatma Gandhi

No need to introduce this name to any Indian as he is indeed father of our nation & that’s not just because he gave us freedom but for the philosophy he lived with & words of wisdom he left back to guide us! Though the problem is we are hypocrites when it comes to worship the great names may it be Prabhu Shriram or Babasaheb Ambedkar or Gandhiji, we just love to make big display of our affection & respect for them but when it comes to adopting their philosophy then we are a big zero (most of us) is a bitter truth! And what I admire abouts Gandhiji is, his clear understanding about the environment of which earth is an inherent part which was ahead of time, as even seventy years back when natural resources weren’t a big issue still, he has written above words which today our environmentalists are shouting in every media! Rather my blog, Vision of Life’s face image also gives the very same message & if you are curious why a builder (which I am for my livelihood) is going on Bapu’s line of thought & where its heading then let me tell you this is about the latest (version you can call) virus to not just the real estate but to entire city (Pune as case study) & that is greed about which Bapuji has warned us nearly seventy five years back. I am actually feeling frowns & wicked smiles from most of the readers as “look who is talking about greed, a builder, hummm” & a few must be thinking “ab aaya Unt pahad ke niche”, it’s a very popular Hindi phrase about someone getting humble after showing lots of attitudes only because of the situation he gets fixed in! Because an industry which is known to be run on greed (fellow builders accept it as that’s what our industries image is) now one of them suddenly speaking about ill effects of greed & I don’t want to prove you wrong or myself right but do mind greed is like an ocean which when you spill it won’t stop to you but consumes everybody around & so has happened to the real estate & this is what I wanted to point out in my sharing.

Look at our ever-growing population which has made us one fifty plus crores & all these people need homes, schools, offices, hospitals, public transport & every such need needs the land which real estate provides & that makes land as the most profitable resource we can have, right? Naturally, for ages it’s the builders who were ultimate beneficiary of the real estate taking away maximum money (again greed) & in that race we as a society are handing over every available piece of land to the real estate encroaching on other species needs from the very said land but the blame was put only on the builders as they were the one who were converting all the lands in to money making i.e. various above mentioned uses while actually, the entire society was running the greed race for land! Slowly other racers i.e. participants (land owners to Mai Bapp govt) in the greed race realized that it’s only the builders which are getting away with the prize money from the land race & here the real problem started! On one side if the govt has increased potential of land use because it can’t increase the existing land in the urban centres & found an avenue for more money, then the landlords may it be plot owners or society owners (in case of redevelopment) started demanding more money or more space (in case of Joint ventures) & nothing wrong as they all could see the money builders were making out of their land & lastly came the flat holders to join the race. Here many will say what flat buyers can make money in real estate, are they not at the mercy of the builders while buying their home! You are right but that was situation a decade back as with ample of FSI supply in the market & lands getting available for development (thanks to govt & redevelopment & PMRDA types establishments) no more the builders are only in commanding position while deciding rates of the homes as there are many players & stronger players too now in real estate which can hold or sustain or say work on lesser margins & suddenly builders realized that they have to negotiate with the flat buyers if they want to survive, this is how flat buyers also earning money as every rupee saved by negotiations while buying your home is a earning actually, right? Now you will say what’s wrong in it as if everybody is in for making money from real estate then the flat buyers or the landlords, why they should be refrained from making money & I agree but then ask who is paying the price of every body’s greed towards the real estate & that answer is reason of my sharing!

As if a builder buys land at a high price & then tries to utilize maximum potential of the land to justify that price paid & as the govt wants to make money by selling things like TDR / Paid FSI so again there is addition in the making cost. And count ever-increasing prices of materials with labour costs & add various govt taxes (and weird taxation system such as zero GST on ready-made homes) & lastly, with all these prices yet you know that the customer is going to bargain with you till you bleed then you will try to make as much construction & make every sq. inch count for sale & for this entire city as well environment is paying the price, this is the reason of my sharing! This doesn’t mean I expect customers to succumb to the prices per sft being quoted by the builders as for decades they were doing so & when everybody including the govt itself trying to think only about their interests then why the flat buyers & redevelopment societies should miss out the train but the problem is protecting or looking after interests & greed, the line is very thin & often overlooked, making the entire city pay for it & our generations, which is what happening now! As real estate is booming in the golden triangle of Mumbai-Nashik-Pune, govt started making full use of it giving FSI which neither the land can hold nor the region & outcome is if on one side (read as one dept such as PMC/ UD) of the govt sanctions the plan then other side (read as other dept such as Environment/Irrigation/Revenue) cries over inability to provide even basic infra like water to the real estate & blames the developers for it! While the actual culprit is everybody including the landlords (and the govt) who expects maximum returns for their piece of the land without bothering what it will cost to the city. As well the govt does nothing to stop migration towards this developed regions & control the growth here & make other regions self-sufficient but keep on making more homes here so more people can get accommodated while other parts of the State are becoming more under developed due to lack of clientele there, let’s think about it!

And in this race we are draining-out not just  our basic resources like water or choking the roads with our automobiles but we are directly killing every other species around us as the land is needed not just by the humans but by birds, insects, butterflies & even the jackals & hyenas too which are either entering in to the cities or running around in the search of water & food or just dying, is the scene for which greed of real estate (read as everybody associated), is my reason of sharing! This doesn’t mean we should stop making homes here in Pune neither I expect the landlords to - their lands for free to the builders & definitely I won’t say to the flat buyers to pay over the top of the head to the builders for the homes they are building but just be less greedy while you deal in the real estate in whatever role you are or whichever side of the table you will be in the deal! Just the way today when you don’t have any physical ailing element such as Diabetes of Blood Pressure yet while eating you are careful to consume less sugar or reduce salt in your food to protect your health in the future, same way to protect health of your city & entire surrounding, try to consume less (FSI, what else) while you are building a home or while you buy a home, do look for the builder’s such approach & negotiate a bit less while you buy your home! And by doing so, you are actually saving your own future which is above any per sq. ft rate you will be earning; adios. with this note (read as warning) dear builders, flat buyers & landlords!
