JEE, NEET, MPSC & Race for Comfort!

It’s not about getting into some govt job or IIT, it’s about achieving a comfort zone, forever… Me

Well, disclaimer at start, the article is about something of which I have zero experience i.e. MPSC or govt service exams & competitive exams for institutes like IIT or Medical (JEE/ NEET). Two reasons, one is I am from the lucky age-group where there was no entrance exam as our 12th Std or Diploma marks decided our fate, though there was entrance for IIT but to my knowledge 12th marks also used to matter. And second, I joined private service (& slogged there happily) though most of my family members were in different govt jobs & never ever had time for any govt service exam nor felt the need for the same! But I have some exposure with youths in different roles (even as guest lecturer) as employer & as consular for many of youngsters (except my own sons, lol) as well I have exposure to various govt depts (read as officials) thanks to my field of operation i.e. real estate! And when I read or say kept reading about the cancellation of many such exams right from NEET to even MPSC, due to various reasons (chiefly paper leak) I thought I must pen down & share as it might help a few, you never know!

First, let’s start with NEET / JEE as they come way earlier before a candidate appears for MPSC but before that lets know a bit about the entire system of competitive exams. Lately in our education system everything revolves around cracking some single exam & high time we must change this in itself, as maybe time has come to evaluate the necessity of the entrance exam system in the first place. For nearly four decades admission to medical / engg was being done through marks of 12th & even today the diploma (polytechnic) admission is done on the basis of 10th mark & all was fine. Rather by me its more comprehensive thing from the point of paper leak also as it's always easier to leak one single paper which is like master key to the exam like JEE / NEET but when you consider 12th marks PCB/ PCM (I would say do google for meaning) then to leak paper of every paper as marks of three subjects were considered for admissions of respective field, is bit difficult for any criminal mind. And this tendency of leaking papers about which I will speak (write) at last is not going to vanish now for sure! At the same time because of one single exam thing which is like an entry pass to supposedly the best of colleges, there is a sudden surge in institutes/ classes (coaching classes) specialised in cracking this exam & that's the root cause of the paper leaks. This I am saying just on basis of logic as I know colleges as reputed like FC (I am deliberately taking name of institute) where students of 12th Science doesn’t attend college at all even when they have got admission there on sheer merit & joins this so-called ticket assuring coaching classes & if you don’t trust me, ask any student you know there or inquire around & if my words are false then I will post Sorry & delete my this post! And this is not about only some FC college, but every major college which was once aspired by students that they should get admission here. And one more thing there are many phoney colleges (dummy) where all you need to do is take admission & don’t ever show up your face in college, you are free to attend full day coaching classes in Pune or even out station also (read as Kota or Latur) & the college will take care of your presently as well internal marks for practicals. Imagine if this is for the science branch what must be happening with Arts & Commerce branches & this all is at Junior level i.e. 11th & 12th!

Now, if this is the scene of basic colleging or education because some JEE or NEET named exam that students are refraining themselves from attending the college itself where they are supposed to learn basics of the subjects in depth & then prepare for the exam which is based on these subjects, isn’t something very seriously wrong with our approach towards the higher education, is my point of sharing! And if this is about JEE/ NEET then every institute right from Symbiosis (and such which are fully private) they also have their own entrance exams for getting admission here, may it be MBA or BBA or BCom or any such course. Outcome is, what we are making students ready for is mugging up for some single exam & you are in. This is why paper leak in such exams are easy when I look at these students giving everything to crack one exam & their parents included in the race then no wonder it looks like a see where hungry sharks are swimming searching for prey & dropping a bait like paper leak in this sea, is all some smart (read as criminal) mind has to do & there are plenty of them in our society (read as system)! No wonder there is nexus of coaching classes owners, private junior colleges who can empty money bags for the paper setters who unfortunately are teachers by profession & we all know how minuscule teachers are paid in our system, so these money bags are enough to make them blind (and deaf) towards their noble profession ‘s ethics & values! This is what we have to deal & remove from the root, is my object of sharing!

What we should do is go back to the basics & first make student learn every subject in totality & make attendance of colleges also equally important while giving them admission to higher courses & change the pattern of this single exam system, take series of exams in short interval or periodically as well make it objective where your knowledge of the subject will be considered not just some mugged up information which you spell out in three hours like a data machine as then not only the paper leakers will have difficulty but at the same time the students also will understand importance of learning the entire subject than just answers of few questions! And about parents, well that’s the main crux of the entire system’s failure as every parent wants their kid to crack IIT or Medical entrance because they think (& make their kid think) that here only lies your comfort zone of life. Its popular phrase in North India, “bass ek baar mera beta JEE crack kar jaye, mai pure mohalle me laddo batunga”, means once my son cracks IIT entrance I will distribute sweets in entire locality, like there is no other mission left in life for the father or mom! Guys, I was reading newspaper covering of Asiad Games which is ongoing in Japan & stories of the players who may not have given any entrance exam but kept practising for hours one single sport, their parents sold their belongings, took loan & today when the boy or girl has got medal for the country, that too is a career which is far bigger & successful than becoming an engineer or doctor & here there is no paper leak or any such short cut is available, is my point of sharing! Unfortunately, we have been getting trained by our parents only to go for shortcuts to get comfort & outcome is the race for JEE/ NEET & at any cost even paper leak, which may be good for a few but nightmare for rest millions who try sincerely without having a paper in hand in advance!

And if this is the case (read as attitude) for just getting admission in some college then we can imagine what people can do to get admission in the govt itself where MPSC comes in the picture! Well, for the ignorant (read as lucky) souls, MPSC i.e. Maharashtra Public Service Commission is State Govt’s organization which conducts or controls entry of candidates in the State Govt’s various depts! Now, you can imagine the kind of temptations here as if the paper setters of some college’s exams are getting offers of lakhs for getting admission, then here you are getting a govt job which is assurance of comfort for life & the same parents (read as mentality) who has got their son admitted in some college via some corrupt (or say wrong) way, now with degree-holder son along can go to any length to get this job, right?  Ok, MPSC’s main job is getting the right people to enter into the govt & for that make a right way (read as a system of exams or interviews) for the same. First & foremost no govt employee must be appointed here (MPSC), except few top persons which Central Govt did for passport office & hand it over to institute like TISC or TIFS (these both are Tata’s organizations, plz google it about them) & give them free hand. Try it for some particular dept or set of positions just to see the difference as every now & then if there is paper leak for MPSC’s any job opening then do mind there are always less jobs & more applicants who doesn’t get the job & they are bound to raise cry about foul play & there always will be opposition leaders/ parties supporting such candidates! In the end how many exams you will take again & how many staffers you will fire from the MPSC system, has govt thought about it? My question is why govt is hell-bent on keeping control of the entry ticket to govt job in its own hands as there only lies the failure of the entire system, is my object of sharing!

At the same time, India’s citizens, like that of any underdeveloped country, know the advantages of the govt system & the comforts (read as safety) it offers to a person & that’s why people can go to any level to get a government job. So, the problem doesn’t lie in the MPSC exam system but the attitude of the society towards the govt job & for that the govt instead of improving MPSC first need to improve their own backyard! Here (read as in govt) nobody gets punished for anything permanently for sure as there may some ACB (plz google) & temporary suspension & so-called elected members to keep control on govt servants but we all knows the futileness of the system & in the end all is well for everybody under the umbrella named govt job, this in itself needs to be changed first, is my subject & object of sharing! Last but not least, being ready for paper leaks even after you design a system which you think is perfect, which is not, we all know! There has to be a plan B where you keep ready to deal with paper leak so only the guilty must be punished & rest thousands should not be allowed to suffer for greed of a few, is what is the most important aspect. Form separate police or any such wing to detect crimes related to any paper leaks & make it offence that of National Security Threat level, which will make it top priority & no guilty will be spared. Trust me, leaking papers of some MPSC or NEET exam is far more serious than it looks as it takes away not just some admission or job from a deserving youngster but along with it takes away the belief of that kid from the entire system, which is the most dangerous outcome for the country at large!

As why people when offered job of even a Jr Engg in any govt dept doesn’t ask any question about the company (read as employer) & blindly accepts the job which may even has lesser pay-grade than the job of an engineer with some private firm (even MNC), have we ever thought why? Answer is simple, first, you have to slog in a private job, while in govt you don’t have to work as nobody is answerable to anybody (mostly). In a private job you will be fired for incompetence whatever position you may be working which never happens in any govt job, which means security even from incompetency & I am not even touching the under-table money, as that won’t be there if we deal with the first two in right way! As corruption by me, is not some govt or private organizations’ monopoly, it's the attitude of an individual & what the owner does to prevent it, which in govt is nobody, that’s the problem we have to deal with & then only we can correct this MPSC named system! There are good officers in govt system but the problem is about taking ownership & unfortunately it lies with the people whom we elect as our representees & of-late their interests are not the company (Society or State) they own but their own family, is a bitter fact!

Last but least, on one side there comes thousands of applications for lowest rank post of a peon (chaprasi) in a govt office, even engineers & MBAs’ apply but for a private firm there are no enough CVs for posts like site engg or sales officer, leave apart peon, as people want money but doesn’t want it hard way or right way! Same is applicable for IIT or Medical Colleges (Govt), even when you have got money for private college you seek for IIT & no wrong in it, but does only IIT make engineers, as the syllabus for civil engg (as I myself am one) is same any college you get admission! So, what you want to become, an engineer or an engineer for some particular college only & have job with some particular organization only, all this doesn’t depend on the institute but your attitude towards the course or field you have chosen; high time for our youths to understand & digest this basic funda of education as till then keep suffering in the grind of entrance exams & paper leaks of them, adios with this note!
