Summer Heat & Care of Your Home!

--

“What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness.”
―
John Steinbeck

“In summer the empire of insects spreads.”
―
Adam Zagajewski

“Summer was always the worst season. Everyone always complained about winter, but winter was simple, you just didn't go outside. Summer always tried to sneak in where it was not wanted.”
― Katherena Vermette

“Imagine a room
With six walls and a ceiling
Two full of windows
Two full of mirrors
And two cream walls that could easily be mistaken as being painted by light.
Each morning, the scorching sun enters the room
And fills each corner till it is overflowing-
The windows give and take sunlight
(There is no escape door or breather).
The mirrors burn and blind
All the walls are fires of their own.
In that choking space, you have a small table fan to your name.

Calcutta summer for you.”

―
Devika Todi

Four great writers from different parts of the world & sharing their views about one common subject, summer, and the last quote is true now for most parts of India barring Himalayan ranges!! By the time you will be reading this sharing, major of the summer is nearly over as officially monsoon enters in our country in the last week of May & we are already towards end of second week of May but its ok as the reason for this sharing is after long time I am writing about something which is related to building construction aspect, so I am happy the civil engineer in me is yet alive, though in bits & pieces! It has been a while since I have written about something which is directly related with homes, more specifically maintenance or problems which the occupants have to face post possession & often tagged as poor-quality construction! We all are well familiar with rainy season problems such as seepage, leakage, short circuits, water clogging & such which comes along with heavy rains but how many of us know that most of these problems origins from summer & few from even winter, I am sure not even qualified civil engineers knows much about it that’s why this sharing! And that way qualification of civil eng of late is a joke in itself keeping full respect for the academics & the teachers as having a degree of civil engg is one thing & having ability (and will) to use that degree for right cause in the field is another thing & it’s this another thing which is missing from the construction industry (read as real estate), is the cause of concern!

Ok, enough of philosophy (read as frustration) but I am happy as this is something which people can use (I hope) & it’s about summer of 2025 & you will say what’s so special in it, then let me tell you this year's summer was hottest in last 100 years, especially Indian subcontinent! This may be the outcome of global warming or deforestation or urbanization or anything as that’s not our subject but our subject is summer's effect on our buildings, specifically homes or apartments & again many will ask, what summer can do to concrete homes, this must be some builders blame game as usual! You are free to make your opinions just the way I am free to share my views but let’s first understand some basic facts about buildings as its engineering or science & it doesn’t work on opinions but on facts & logic which unfortunately we the Indian home buyers as well builders are weak at! Before that I will like to give you background of this subject or the reason why I felt need of sharing as last week in a get-together of Credai (association of developers) one very senior builder met me & told his problem of falling or loosening of dado (wall) tiles in the toilets of his newly built project & the numbers were staggering, nearly two hundred plus flats has been facing this problem & he was worried what can be the solution. Same way in few of our completed projects as well in my known circle top terrace surface flooring/ layer of cement waterproofing have budged up & cracks are seen in it. And then in one of my recent projects a flat holder had nasty argument with our marketing team as ceiling PoP (Plaster of Paris)  layer in his  hall has fall down (it’s just a layer nothing serious actually that someone will get injured) & in his flat’s skirting tiles (small band of tile as lining on the wall at the end of flooring) has also got loosened up & two/ three tiles of his skirting has got displaced & he named us as worst construction quality, money saving practices etc which I can understand! And I am sure there may be similar cases around but as I said real estate industry's most “kamjor kadi” (weakest link) is data & its non-belief in knowledge, so such incidents/ cases never reach to a common platform, that’s why this sharing!

These all are related to sudden increase in temperature & like in the medical profession doctor’s diagnosis has utmost importance in building construction also cause or reason of occurrence of any civil maintenance problem is equally important. As one, to repair the problem you must know the cause behind it & second, then only you can work out a strategy so that this problem will not occur in your next projects! And sudden rise in temperature to extreme levels is the root cause of most of the above civil problems which we can avoid & cure also. Here again many people will say, rains they can understand cause leakage or dampness but how can summer heat is responsible, then let me tell you, seeds of seepage & dampness are sown in the summers only & hotter the summer then more chances of problems it will create in the structure for the upcoming monsoons! Like our body, exactly similar is the structure of our buildings, as columns & beams are like our bones, supporting the body. Our muscles are like walls or masonry of the building providing mass or volume to different compartments & our skin is like plaster on the walls of our homes. And exactly as our skin becomes dry & crack-up to the exposure to extreme heat of summer the skin of our home i.e. plaster also gets cracked because of temperature stresses due to heat. And then in cities like Pune, in single day the temperature drops from 41 degrees in the noon to 20 degrees at night, creating thermal stresses in the entire structure of our homes. A simple science is, every material has its own expansion & contraction tendency for facing the temperature difference & that’s physics we have learned in 10th standard, right? As our home is built from different materials like steel, concrete, blocks, bricks, tiles, mortar (for plaster), pipes & such, & all these materials are joined with each other by some binders. At the same time these materials expands & contracts in their own proportion & it’s a natural phenomenon. But when the temperature difference is very high just the way this year’s heat is, then this expansion contraction factor also increases causing cracks in bonding of all above material & if plaster surface forms cracks, then tiles which are in a way sticked to walls can fall-off, PoP gets peeled off from plastered surfaces due to thermal stresses & so does the paint from walls, which we name bad quality or faulty construction!

First & foremost, these are not in any way structural faults nor can cause any damage to the structure as these factors have been taken in consideration while designing the structure, but superficial damage is bound to be there somewhere due to the heat. What we can do is, understand what has happened & why & then redo it with using some plasticizers which will work as adhesives. And in new construction keep these things in mind, this is why I won’t ever recommend regular plaster to ceilings of rooms of a home as PoP layer if falls down due to heat can’t damage any physical harm to the occupants but if regular plaster falls down, it can be dangerous at times because of the weight of the chunk which isn’t the case with PoP! These thermal stresses also can make the wall tiles /cladding material come out from the walls & to avoid this try using glue instead of mortar as adhesive while fixing & keep some gap between the tiles which people avoid for looks but these joints act as air relief paths in summers. Friends, aesthetics we all love but more important is durability which a civil engg must always keep in mind! All the joints between dissimilar members of the home such as between columns & walks, between beams & walls, between slab & walls must be properly taken care & use of plasticizers is a must to absorb the expansion contraction of these members. In case of already completed structure, you can open up these joints & fill them with adhesives or fibre-based mortar & refinish which is a costly affair off course but these joints are the gateways of water in the upcoming monsoons causing dampness & seepage, which actually is the outcome of summer heat’s effect on your home! Also, while painting outside surfaces of buildings do use heat reflective paints which will help in keeping inside of homes a bit cool!

One more summer heat’s impact is,  about PVC plumbing pipes which carry our drainage, water & even our different cables also. These pipe joints can get distorted due to heat making the joints leak in case of drainage or water, so a periodical maintenance is a must. And electrical cables coating also can melt as the copper wires inside are already heated due to electricity & the outer heat adds fuel in it making the coating melt & short circuit is the outcome! Using thicker gauge pipes is one way to reduce these faults & again periodical checking which most societies doesn’t do & blame it on poor quality which isn’t the case always. At the same time summer heat increases or boosts life of insects such as termites and their capacity to damage the wood work & PoP, so periodical anti-termite treatment along with checking from professional agencies is a must wherever there is even the smallest quantity of woodwork in our homes. And keep a keen eye on termite as many times like cancer, in the first stage you can save lots of damage which increases as per the stages. Smallest things such as occurrence of white powder around any wooden item in the homes in the summers immediately must be inspected & treated! Friends, our home is like our body as it works on two-fold things, first is creating immunity i.e. fitness & second is regular checkups & proper measures as per the outcome of checkups! And yes, instead of panicking or naming some entity, take help from professionals in the field & do only as per his/ her advice. Last but not the least, not just try but plant as many indigenous trees (neem, mango, bahawa etc) you can around your building as that’s one sure way of keeping our surrounding cool even in the hottest of the summers & for that first reduce our greed of using every sq. ft. of the land for your self & leave some space for the trees also! Summers are going to be harsh every year & we are only to blame for that & we only can make the summers cool back again if we want to save ourselves from the heat waves, adios with this warning!

Hills of Pune, Dobara!

--

“It is that range of biodiversity that we must care for - the whole thing - rather than just one or two stars of any environmental ratings.” … David Attenborough .

Sir David Frederick Attenborough is an English broadcaster, biologist, natural historian, and writer. He is best known for writing and presenting, Life Planet Documentary series with BBC & Animal Planet, a comprehensive survey of animal and plant life on Earth, this one work is enough actually to introduce Sir David. If you haven’t watched any of it then please google & do watch as then you will realize the sincerity in his above words as I have come across many personalities working for nature, wildlife but very few are truly passionate about the subject & a fewer has understand the cause they are fighting for & Sir David is sure one such! I have used Sir Davids above quote nearly ten years back & for the same subject i.e. hills of Pune & I love Pune (sarcasm) for its unique quality of keeping any problem lingering till either the problem gets solved (rarely) on its own or people (read as citizens, common man whatsoever) loosed interest of forgets the problem, which is often true. And joke is the very same problem resurfaces after a few years just the way in the fashion world trends keeps on remerging after some time for e.g. bail bottom pants! Or we can take another example of remake of popular or epic movies as analogy here, such as Devdas or Don as so are some permanent civic problems or issues related to Pune city & hills of Pune is definitely one such. No wonder this subject keeps resurfacing after every few years & as usual the govt immediately set up a committee to find the solution for the hills of Pune city! which is my subject of sharing; hills & not the committee!

Govt over the years has become very diplomatic especially when issue is of social conflict & city is Pune, may it be Bal Bharti Hill Road (plz google) or BRT or Riverfront Development, New Airport, Public Transport (PMPML) & many such, as Govt’s object is getting elected in the next election & not solving the problem, that’s the main problem with Pune’s overall growth! Many won’t like this statement but first it’s not against any political party but every govt which has ruled us in past & in present & second, Punekar’s themselves are responsible for this chaotic approach or attitude of the Mai Baap Govt for city’s civic issues & if you don’t agree with both of my comments, that’s why this sharing, taking present release (sarcasm) i.e. hills as the test subject to prove why I said so! First & foremost let’s understand why hills are so close (and important) for Pune city as without understanding the importance of any object we won’t ever be able to solve the problem related to that object, a simple logic which govt has always ignored. In the case of hills also what citizens want or the city wants, the government never has tried to understand it as it ignored the core of the problem i.e. role of the hills in Pune city. The city has been blessed with hills which once were covered by greenery all around the year & this has made the city to earn tag of ‘No Fan City,” & here Fan is real fan which gives air or say creates air & not the social media fans, which are many for the city, sorry for the PJ!  These hills along with the greenery on it were able to maintain cooler temperature all around & in the city as whatever wind used to blow from them was always cool due to green cover & the water tables it used to maintain, one more positive side effect of the green covered hills. Over the decades as there was no policy in existence about these hills, as the Fan following for the city increased the green cover & the hill areas started decreasing because they were easy targets as no policy was there for use of land under hills as well because of geographic barriers it was always difficult (though not impossible) for the civic body to reach here & stop damage to these hills!

The erosion of hills kept happening slowly which started in early 80’s & then rampantly post 2000 (year not note, lol , sorry for PJ) & till we (read as govt) realized it, nearly half of the hills of Pune has gone & if you don’t believe then take look by yourself at Parvati hill range along Sinhgad road & is very much in the center of the city. Fortunately, the hills which were under defense protection such as NDA hills range & Pashan, got protected because of fear & discipline of the Military but rest all hills fall prey for every wrong purpose though mostly for homes (illegal off course) of poor people those who can’t afford a legal home in & around of Pune city! And that’s why damage to the hills of Pune is the outcome of poor urban development policy making of our all the rulers local & at State level, is my blunt statement & if you don’t believe it then do read ahead! Because if we can’t save an entire hill range like Parvati which is in the heart of the city, how are we going to protect hills which are in suburbs as well out of the Pune city, as a committee may give you policy for hills but who will implement that policy as that requires will to save the hills, is my reason of sharing! At the same time as I mentioned a policy or law or asset of rules are just few lines on paper & first, they should be practical & second is there must be a system in place to make them practical on the ground & till now both things were absent for the hills, is a fact & that is sheer failure of urban planning only!  As we failed to predict the growth of Pune region & the way the need of the homes will increase here & result is today, we are unable to provide homes to all segments of the society & real estate doesn’t mean homes costing one crore rupees only but it means homes for all pockets! As we need homes for our ho=use maids, drivers, peons & many such whose services runs this city’s life & if they don’t get home nearby in their budget then open lands (read as hills) are bound to get easy target for their homes, is not some rocket science or urban planning but common sense!

And on top of it our confused policy making may it be hills or rivers adding the fuel for targeting these lands for illegal homes. First, we called it HTHS i.e. hill top hill slope zone, where earlier 4% construction was allowed, (no logic) then we just kept it zone with no construction allowed but the land will remain in possession of the owner only. And as that’s not a reservation PMC (govt) can’t acquire it by giving TDR or compensation & yet govt wants the land owners to keep these lands as it is;  who are we fooling guys, is what I want to ask our policy makers!

If we want to save hills the first define what you meant as “Save” as we don’t want these hills barren & empty but green & lively with biodiversity flourishing on them & that is possible only if we treat them the way we do forests in project tiger. I wont bother you with details what is project tiger if (if is imp) the “Mai Bapp” govt is really interested in saving hills & the citizens, then please google about project tiger as with that kind of policy we can first clear the encroachment on the hills & then we can forcefully do the things which are necessary for maintaining biodiversity over the, But here the main hurdle is money involved & votes involved which is missing from the project tiger lands & that’s why will of govt is important to protect the hills as the govt just wants to make all people happy & save money also, which is not going to happen ever, that is why we need urban planning! Another way is making it reservation & give TDR with full potential, as this logic that city will be flooded with TDR is a fool’s argument because TDR is like Crypto Currency, you can utilize only on the lands which are free of reservation & those lands are limited, so on some day there will be TDR but no land to utilize it, this point we are missing. And another hurdle is delay in issuing TDR certificates which takes nearly two to three years & land owners of hill lands are not ready for this time lag especially  when they get ready clients for their lands with cash & we know who these clients & their intentions for the lands under hills are! One more aspect is what we call as Hills & hill Tops as by earlier DC rules (plz google) if a slope of particular land is more than 1/5 for entire plot as well all four sides of land are having steeper slope than this ratio then such lands will be considered hills & hill tops. Problem is even if on both sides of your land development has happened & still such plots are shown as hills or hill tops, & such land owners are bound to retaliate these norms is a fact! Now we have drones & Ai at our service, let's make exact survey of every sq ft of Hill lands for what they are actually as data is the key for making any right policy, which is our weakest link (as usual)! As we even don’t know how much area is under the hills, how much is private & under whose ownership, how much area is encroached & how many people are living on these hills & many such. As we want to save the hills & we don’t know the scale of the volume of the land we are thinking of protecting, this is a joke!

We can make appeal to MNCs’ in Pune to adopt hills & spend money for conservation of them in whatever way is needed, may it be relocation of existing residents, acquisition of land or plantation & many such (just a suggestion) & give these MNC’s consideration for the same in whatsoever form we can, as why accept free lunches to others for our health, is my question! And, last but not the least, the attitude of we "the Punekars" about every civic issue we have, as do mind when it's greater good we need to accept (and respect) practical solutions, which unfortunately is the biggest problem with Punekars! We want everything perfect without defining perfection & accepting the basic fact of planning that nothing is perfect, it’s our way to accommodate something is what makes that thing perfect & our Hills are also not exception to this law! If we want green hills then we will have to make a right policy for them as then only we can conserve these hills for the purpose for which the nature itself has created them or else there will be committees & there will be policies but no hills, is a writing on the wall, adios with this warning Punekars!

Tadoba Forests, School for Learning How to Face Adversities!

--

“If a person goes to forest & after coming back says, he hasn't seen anything, then the person is not just blind but deaf, unable to smell & dumb too” ... Me.

Well, one more thing to add, if you are not all above yet forest makes you greedy also a bit; will explain this aspect also ahead. Yes, the sharing is about forests & it’s about Tadoba too (as the trip was there) so those who are already feeling nauseated, can stop reading (waidhanik ishara)! Its one of the worst summers we have witnessed, thanks to rampant deforestation, urbanization, increase in exhausts of private vehicles, add to that blowers of our air conditioners which now are directly affection our environment though we are yet fools not to accept or acknowledge this & price is being paid by every living being! Tadoba is already known for its nasty summer heat while Chandrapur & its surrounding towns like Bramhapuri are on world map for being hottest places on the globe, this summer in April only, the mercury soared above 45 degrees. The day I was crossing Nagpur for heading towards Tadoba’s Kolara (Chimur side) gate, Nagpur & Chandrapur both were above 45 degrees & I when I bought local newspaper, the head line was Chandrapur is hottest place in the world today (earlier day’s temperature)! And trust me by eight am in the morning you can feel the giddiness due to heat, though one good thing is oxygen level is much higher in the jungle & it helps a lot as oxygen is a cooler gas in comparison to other gasses. As the clock starts ticking ahead so does the heat quotient & all the movement in the jungle is now around water, which also is getting scarce in a few zones of tadoba! Tigers as they eat raw meat which generates extreme body heat need water to maintain body temperature & so do the birds as well as every other living being in the forests & suddenly water bodies are in most demand. And one thing more when you are in the forest & get to see His Highness or He Highness (tiger) then suddenly the excitement makes you forget all the weather adversities such is the power those yellow black stripes has got & I am no exception to this law of wildlife!

The reason of this wildlife (read as Tadoba) sharing is not about summer & the heat but what I carry back from forests & the first thing is patience as well as accommodating extremities of the weather & learning to live with discomfort! As in our life supported by AI (read as, controlled by) we hardly have to face any discomfort, if it's summer heat we have AC to keep our homes cool, in winter we have heaters & warmers to keep us cool, we have microwave to make our food hot when its cold & we have freeze at our service when we want to enjoy our deserts chilled, in all life in the concrete jungle has made us in a way very rigid to adjust with any adversity. This is exactly why I go to the forests as right from waking up at morning 4 am & for that making my brain to tune for sleeping before 10 pm, to eat light food & be ready for a bumpy ride with no seat belt or AC in the car & getting exposed to extreme weather, forest teaches me to adjust myself with surrounding rather than making surrounding adjust with us as per our comforts! And even in the summer of April end, the morning breeze always makes you shiver for the first half hour in the forests, even in Tadoba but as the sun rises by 10 am, you are unable to even hold the metal pipe for support in the gypsies, such is the extreme change in temperature. Oh yes, forgot to mention the dust from red soil along, which keeps hanging in the air & you have to pull your nose-mask down all the time to protect your sensitive nostrils safely! Now imagine, if this is what we have to face with all the protection what animals like tiger & sloth bear must be feeling & how they must be dealing with the summer of tadoba!

This is where the sightings not just of tigers but of sloth bear or moments in the wilderness makes you forget about all the discomforts, which in a way is like practicing some Zen meditation, as you are waiting in exposed sun while the tiger is cozily sleeping somewhere nearby in the shadows of bamboos on in the pool of water, you can’t see it but you know its there & you keep waiting. You are lucky if your gipsy can find shelter of some tree or else to bear the sun is the only way you have & keep drinking water as mush you can (again there is problem of facing the nature’s call as wash-rooms are far away, one more aspect of wildlife tourism) but all this is worth as the moment you saw the tiger coming on the water hole (whenever it feels then only) you forget everything about the torture of heat you have gone through & all you do is just keep looking at the majestic animal & its aura! Suddenly you don’t feel any scorching heat, sweat, dry throat, nothing matters now & the mood is elated, that’s the power tiger has in its mere sighting, such a moment, is what I carry back along from the forest! And then waiting at any water hole for tiger is fun as first if you find the water-hole without any deer or monkeys in it, in these times of the year then be sure the tiger is resting somewhere nearby, you can’t see it but the tiger has definitely noticed you & now all you need is patience. But if a tiger is not at a waterhole then you can enjoy other animals coming for their thirst at waterbodies & their behaviour. Many a times if tiger is sleeping somewhere nearby in dense foliage & its has come in the night itself then the animals like deer or monkeys or gaur doesn’t notice it & are carefree a bit but when they know tiger is somewhere around then the way they are cautious, it's worth observing!

And waiting at water holes you can click birds as they are not afraid of a tiger & noon is feeding as well as drinking time. Right from paradise-flycatcher to woodpecker to jungle fowl which otherwise are difficult to click as you are standing still you can observe & click also. Though I am not a good bird photographer so even in such times I haven’t been able to click good images of these birds yet their all such frames in my mind is also something I carry back from the forests! Best thing is, when you can’t see a tiger sleeping around the waterhole but a bigger animal such as gaur or sloth bears or even pack of wild dogs comes to the waterhole taking the same path where the tiger is resting, then two things can happen, either the tiger mover deeper in the forest (your bad-luck) or it comes to water hole & all such encounters are worth observing! During this trip all the tigers I saw around water holes also & even the shyest of the tigers has to visit waterholes, one such tigress named Bella we could see only because of the heat factor! Rather, forest dept must create rest rooms (clean, please note that) from some distance near all major water holes so tourists can patiently wait for sightings not just of tiger but all the wild life as they don’t have to move far away from the waterbody for their nature’s call. As then most tourists which are not exposed to wildlife’s rich diversity can observe all the species at length & guides also can spare time to explain importance of all such species in the forests than just running behind the tigers, which happens because we promote only tigers as our wildlife, a perception which can be changed only with right steps & making tourists spend time at waterholes is one sure such way!

Summers are the best season to meet sloth bears as extreme heat makes them also come in open for water & you can definitely see a few in Tadoba during summer noon.  Sloth bears are very interesting creatures of forests, once found all over India, I remember their sightings around my small town in Vidarbha region also. Rampant urbanization & loss of habitat has now made the sloth bears take shelter of remaining patches of forests & Tadoba buffers is one of their safest homes. Yet its sightings are far rarer than a tiger which many tourists don't know & ignores these creatures. Sloth bears nocturnal animals i.e. usually moves out at night yet in summers you can meet them even in day-light while they are on their hunt for termites. They are shy yet get provoked very easily & that's why local people are more afraid of encountering a sloth bear than a tiger as you can never take their next move for granted & their sharp claws can rip apart human skin in a split second! A sloth bear coming in your direction can suddenly make a reverse turn & go away or can do the opposite also, making clicking it very difficult! Yet on this trip I could click a mom & her cub clearly, while noticing our present on a hot summer noon the mom showed her razor-sharp claws to us as a warning to keep away, which we happily did!

We also did shoe donation drives for the Forest labours & Fire Watchers in the buffers under guidance of Mr Kushagra Pathak IFS, Dy Director Tadoba Buffers & Mr SS Dube, ACF. Round officer of Madnapur gate Mr Khawase coordinated from forest dept while Hemangi vartak of Jungle Belles & the reason is Indus School kids has initiated this drive. Friends, forests have given us so many joyful movements & while we carry them back to our concrete jungle as our wonderful memories, it's each of us duty to give it back whatever best we can as then only the forests will keep on giving us, adios with this appeal!

"Vaibhav" of Indian Cricket!!

--

“You don't need to play every ball but every ball needs your judgement.”
― Amit Ray

“Every individual has his own style, his own way of presenting himself on and off the field.”- Sachin Tendulkar

“History is never an accident, its created by hard work dedication & most importantly with self-belief.”—Me

Amit Ray, is a writer of motivational books like "Enlightenment Step by Step' & such, second name if you want introduction then better you don’t read ahead this sharing & third one is myself & that’s not quote but feelings which made me write this sharing! Well, you must have guessed sharing is about cricket & specifically about an innings I watched in IPL 2025! It was Monday, a day back I have returned from forest trip & my mood was yet down by handling the pending work which was waiting for me here & I went back to home with heavy head, & messed up mind (well, even after 25 years in business/profession whatever you call it, such days happens to you & I take that as sign of liveliness) & usually I read, rarely watch TV & after horrific performance of CSK (plz google) in IPL of late not watching much of IPL for sure! Yet just casually cheeked update & RR (again goggle) has started its batting with openers, one of which is Vaibhav Suryvanshi, a fourteen-year kid (can’t even call him boy) , is I knew & out of curiosity  I continued watching RR batting, outcome of which is this sharing!

Well, by now not just India but entire world knows about Vaibhav Suryvanshi, is a boy of 14 years (yes you read right), comes from Bihar, his parents has taken lots of suffering to make him able to play cricket, RR management especially Rahul Dravid spotted him & bought in auction at just Rs 25 lakhs (well, no more just) & is the youngest player already to play an IPL game etc etc. By now most people know this also that he has become the youngest player to hit a century in men’s T20 format not just IPL as well maximum sixes in an inning & has on his name the fastest century by an Indian batsman in IPL , more etc.! I won’t bother you with the details & there has been knocks which were played on far bigger test, 175 by Kapil Dev in world cup 83 to nearly similar by Maxwell in world cup 24, crickets history book is filled with legends & their heroics, so what made me to write about a knock which has come on  different stage & not so crucial match! The only reason is look who has hit that knock, a fourteen-year kid, do you know one such who has achieved that feat, is my reason for sharing! I ask the readers one simple question, tell me or remember your biggest achievement at the age of fourteen in any field, even studies & compare that to what Viabhav has achieved & then you will realize the importance of the knock! Guys, fourteen is what, most of us were in ninth std, so even for academics there was nothing much challenging to prove, right & look at the way he has done it at fourteen years age & in front of whom, all these matters a lot not for just himself but for millions of the kids who think they also can make it big, this knock is special because it’s by a kid next door!

Well, Sachin Tendulkar also comes from a middle-class family & started making records at the age of sixteen but sixteen is still a young boy, while Vaibhav is still a kid, yet! And the look whom he faced, right from M. Siraj, Ishant Sharma, Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sunder & Rashid Khans, all these names are representing the country on international stage while Vaibhav wasn’t even born when many of these names started their career, this is special. And he was already in news by hitting six on the first ball he faced in the IPL, again a record for a young debutant & he cried while he got out at score of 38, sign of a kid & in mere third innings he made hundred, is special! Guys, I know many people hate cricket but to get a hundred is not fluke or luck & in 35 balls, definitely not just luck but class, dedication, temperament, hard work, strength & patience, each of these terms  matters & that’s what the kid has & he displayed at big stage yesterday! IPL may be a private league or overdose of cricket but then so is La Liga or Champions Trophies in football or NBA league of basketball in the USA, our country loves cricket & IPL indeed provides what people want, so who are you & me to name it, is what I feel. It a sport, billions like to watch it & millions aspire to make career in it & just few hundred can make it to the ten teams in the league & out of that some two-digit numbers are able to carry it forward & make it bigger, so it’s not a joke to deliver even in IPL league which Vaibhav did, that’s why the knock is special!

Virat Kohli, the GOAT (plz google) in one recent interview has shared his experience about playing in first edition of IPL, nearly eighteen years back while he was of nineteen years old, & facing Ishant Sharma (interestingly, its Ishant Sharma only vs Vaibhav also) & explaining how it was like facing a totally different bowler though Virat used to play a lot with Ishant in the nets as they were from same Delhi team! This is what a tournament like IPL does to you, as here its cut throat thing is what every player knows, you don’t perform & you are made to sit in the dugout & next auction plan you have no takers means no money, no career, is the bitter truth of IPL! Indeed, every player tries to give his best here & there is no mercy, as no bowler will think while throwing a bouncer at you thinking you are a small kid, yet Vaibhav played his tone, is what makes him special!

Another most important aspect, Vaibhav comes from an average Indian family from small town who can barely make provide him basic needs of life & he has no godfather to give him second chance, the way likes of Rohan Gavaskar & Arjun Tendulkar got (sorry, but fact) as nepotism (plz google) may not help you to stay in the game for long but it definitely helps you to get one or more chances to prove what you are; which again was not in the favor of Vaibhav & best think is the kid knows it, so he grabbed the opportunity with both hands & delivered! This knock may be special in many ways in breaking records of the game but for me it's more special from the eyes of thousands of Vaibhav’s’ whom I meet everyday morning on my way to my game of badminton, sweating in the summers & shivering in the winters yet keep practicing on the grounds, with only one thought in mind that some day they will make it big & watching Vaibhav hitting sixes on international level bowlers bowling, every such boy & girl must have thought, “yes, Impossible is Nothing”, this is why Vaibhav’s knock is worth sharing & taking notice. Vaibhav is just another kid from neighborhood & if he can make it big with all his limitations (financial, social etc.) then I also can do it, this I call hope & hope is not just a word, it has biggest strength in it which makes anybody to reach wherever he or she wants to reach! Interestingly, in a recent interview Gopichand, Ex Indian badminton player & coach has warned parents about allowing their kids to choose sports as their career as competition is huge, money is less & so are the earning years! But fortunately, the scene is much better in cricket , thanks to leagues like IPL, which has not only opened avenues of money but of entry to the national team also through it, & this is via performing at such a stage matters a lot now & at age of fourteen makes it super special! Irony is, while Vaibhav was tearing apart opposition bowlers & making his debut special, one more young man was playing his first IPL in the very same match, Kareem Janat, whose first over in IPL has costed his team 30 runs, courtesy Vaibhav’s batting & poor Kareem didn’t get second over in the match & may not even get second chance to play now, this is cut throat life of IPL(read as Life), & sure Vaibhav knows it!

What is more important for Vaibhav now, is the journey ahead as success indeed is hard to earn but more harder part is to carry it & retain it as or else you just remain “One or Few Tons Wonder” & we have our very own Vinod Kambli as an example who experts says was better than Sachin but couldn’t sustain the success & the glamour which comes along with it in the sports. Here is where upbringing (Sanskar in Marathi) matters a lot & that will be test of Vaibhav’s parents actually, how he faces the glory & glamour, but for now thanks a lot Vaibhav,(which means wealth) for what you have done to this game which flows like blood in the veins of this country, go ahead make the game proud, is all I will wish for you & yes be a kid within always, it does helps!
