Living With Tigers!

--

--

“Tigers, except when wounded or when man-eaters, are on the whole very good-tempered...Occasionally a tiger will object to too close an approach to its cubs or to a kill that it is guarding. The objection invariably takes the form of growling, and if this does not prove effective it is followed by short rushes accompanied by terrifying roars. If these warnings are disregarded, the blame for any injury inflicted rests entirely with the intruder.”

“A tiger's function in the scheme of things is to help maintain balance in nature and if, on rare occasions when driven by dire necessity, he kills a human being or when his natural food has been ruthlessly exterminated by man, he kills two percent of the cattle he is alleged to have killed, it is not fair that for these acts a whole species should be branded as being cruel and bloodthirsty.”
― Jim Corbett

Though many people frown by mention of a tiger as gentleman, but these words are not written by some amateur or WhatsApp PhD holder (sarcasm) but by the man (Jim Corbett) who has spent more time of his life with the tigers than the humans & has survived with no protections of the modern world. Indeed, he carried a gun but never used it unless it’s for the right cause, on any wild animal & that’s why Corbett’s name is a legend when the subject is tiger! Of-late tigers are again in the news but as usual for wrong reasons as summer was at peak in central India, thanks to our rampant deforestation & encroachment on wildlife but the outcome of which is price paid by the tigers (read as wildlife) & humans staying with them! Reason behind this sharing (no though its tiger but not about tadoba) is news in media, especially of a young RFO (range forest officer) in Ranthambore tiger park, Rajasthan as well humans killed around tadoba & in Assam also by the tigers. Agreed, when its tigers Tadoba you can’t be kept out of the sharing yet this time my main focus is on the news of a young ranger who lost his life in Ranthambore & sole object is how can we save these precious lives of humans as well of tigers! As in tadoba, within span of a week nearly seven to 8 humans got killed by tiger & agitation was so much that the villagers tried to burn the section of forest where majority of these deaths has occurred & in Assam case nearly thousands of villagers hacked one tiger (hope it’s the right tiger, I mean any tiger would have been wrong only, yet) who was supposedly responsible for death of a villager & even ran away with claws & canines of that tiger!

What you make out of all these incidents (many will ask, what we have to do in the first place for such incidents) & I am asking this as a common logical (lol) thinking human being & not as wildlife expert, which I am also not one. Answer is simple, tiger’s numbers are increasing which indeed is a good thing but we are unable to adjust ourselves to live with the tigers! And the outcome is, increasingly deaths of humans as well of tigers because we can’t expect the tigers to change or train themselves & live in the harmony of the humans, which actually they are trying to do in much better way than the humans but tigers have their limitations. First, a tiger is equally intelligent (rather more) in comparison with a human & that’s why it avoids humans in the best possible way; in the same way that we avoid conflict with stronger enemies or say we avoid our creditor when we have no money to repay back (ask the builders)! I have seen in my many trips, a tiger hiding in the thickset whenever it senses humans (especially on feet) which is a common thing in the buffers & coming out only when it feels humans have gone away. Even when a tiger is walking on forest roads which it prefers more than to walk on dry leaves or grass & if it sees or hear human even from long distance (which a tiger is master doing at), it will silently walk inside the forest along the road & all you will see is its fresh pugmarks in the dust! It’s the humans which do exactly the opposite as they will try to block tigers’ way or shout or do things which a tiger will get disturbed or even afraid & in that mode it attacks the respective humans. At the same time tigers avoid the timings of the day when humans are out in the open in more numbers but humans don’t follow even such simple rules. They wander in tiger’s areas on the time of the day or night which is its hunting time & accidently get killed by the tiger! If you check in all the above three incidents which are core subjects of my sharing then it’s the humans who ventured in the tiger’s area without any protection of right knowledge of doing so & eventually got killed is a fact!

Yet, lives have been lost & somebody is going to pay price as somebody has paid a price & that to be paid one is needless to say the tiger, that’s why this sharing. Coming to Ranthambore RFO case, which is more alarming as villagers I can understand are not aware enough even though they have been born & brought up around a tiger & this makes them over confident or many a times their needs for living overcomes their fear & makes them exposed to tiger at wrong time in wrong way. But, a trained RFO doing so & losing his life, is definitely indicates something is very wrong the way we are training our forest staff ( Its applicable to all States’) as  they are supposed to know how to behave in the presence of a tiger or any wild animal & a RFO is a senior position in forest dept rather most important link between ground staff & upper ranks, & this can send wrong message about safety of the ground staff working with bare minimum protection in the forests where tigers, leopards, gaur & sloth bear roams! Many stories are roaming about the incidence of Ranthambore & one includes, respective forest dept feeding an injured tigress with cow/ buffalo calf as the tigress can’t hunt in present condition & it has small cubs. So, the other tigers in the locality came to know of this feeding thing & they too started waiting around this tigress & while transporting such food, a tiger attacked the RFO which was walking unarmed around! Whether this is true or not I don’t know but it’s possible & most importantly before this incident happened social media was flooded with reels of tigers roaming around right among parked gypsies at very same spot means they are no more afraid of humans around, a very alarming signs which most of us has ignored but not excepted from the respective forest staff of which the said RFO was very much part of! I am not blaming or naming any system & have full sympathy for the deceased RFO but with the right training, this could have been avoided is my sharing’s subject.

In the recent past during my forest trips in various States’ I have met many young forest-guards & RFO’s & many of them come from city/ urban life & has joined forest dept as it’s a govt job & nothing wrong in it. But this job is not like joining some municipal corporation or public work dept, or a bank, this is forest & just like military here a mistake can cause you your life & one must be extremely disciplined & trained in the right way to deal with wildlife, is this being taken care, is my question to all the concerned? As earlier most of the forest guards, Dy. Rangers posts which are supposedly the ground staff & has most exposure of the forests directly used to get recruited from the natives which are well versed with the forests. At the same time a fresh graduate from college who has cleared some State exam & has become RFO, how can you put him in-charge of core or buffers of project tiger as he or she has never seen even a wild boar or sloth bear leave apart a tiger in life, something which forest depts’ top bosses must think & act on!  No wonder these youngsters with stars on their shoulders (rank) walk in the forests just the way they walk in some mall or city roads, & I have seen this!

Just few years back I was waiting in gypsy in Tadoba near Telia lake & the Big Boy Baghdoh (male tiger) was relaxing in grass & two guards came on bike, parked their bike at some distance & started walking where the tiger was sleeping casually just to show off, even when tourists were yelling don’t go ahead. Fortunately, the tiger got up by their movements but walked to the opposite side of the lake, gentleman it is but imagine if the tiger was in mating or the tigress with cubs then things would have gone bad. What I wanted to share is the attitude of forest staff that could make them fall in trouble in the forest & this is only because one, the city background & two, some lacunas in training while they get posted in real forest like project tiger! I repeat, I don’t doubt intelligence, smartness or commitment of these young forest officers or guards but somewhere we can’t ignore the importance of experience in any job & unless it’s there we shouldn’t post them at such position is what I feel & this could have avoided life of the young RFO in Ranthambore!

At the same time the dangers in the forests are not only tigers but snake bites, flash floods of rivers. Animals like wild-boar, poachers & many such. The training of every forest person must have exposure to all these threats as well dealing with them. I don’t know whether climbing on any tree is part of training in the forest dept but it must be, is what I feel. At the same time why are we not giving guns to every forest staffer, is my sincere question as poachers won’t think once while attacking the forest people & you can’t expect to handle poachers with a stick, right? And in case of attack by gaur or wild-boar, firing in air can scare these animals away, yet for reasons known only to some seniors in the govt as even RFO rank officers rarely carry a gun in the forest, is my observation!

Now coming to another aspect of experience which is the case of tadoba & Assam incidences, those who are beyond fifty year of age, & are natives of villages around project tigers, they have grown up seeing tigers around men & women, both & knows how to live with a tiger. But a generation whose villages have been moved out of sanctuaries or core areas, they now are not allowed to go inside these forests the way seniors in the village have done in the past & this has made the younger generation to lose the exposure of living with tigers for a while. And now, tigers’ population has increased, they are roaming free not just in the core but in the buffer forests as well outside of it but the humans are not used to the freedom of the tigers & unable to accommodate them & outcome is death of humans or the tigers! This is sheer analysis by going through the various mishaps as most deaths of the humans by the attack of a tiger has happened in late evenings or early hours of morning & those which have happened in day time that too alone person working in the field types. Where is the training to the locals, especially the younger lot to behave when a tiger is moving around, is my question, keeping full respect for the forest depts’ efforts. And do mind any coexistence is achieved only by setting certain rules & following them to the fullest which I call discipline & at which we the Indians are very poor is a fact, may it be obeying red signal in the city or walking alone in the areas where tiger moves! The concerned depth (forest) & others must focus on making people aware about the way they should change their lifestyle where tigers are part of it, & I know it's not easy but that’s the only logical & right solution! As even tigers follow rules of coexistence & try to live by them as I have already mentioned above but it’s like dealing with a small child or an old man, above certain limit you can’t expect a tiger to improve its behaviour but we the humans only has to do it, if we want the tiger to survive, right? We can (read as, must) take help from the right people to achieve this objective of coexistence & for that training, training & training is the only way! Let’s think over this aspect of the deaths which tigers have caused (vice versa too) & work together for the right outcome which will make both humans & the tigers live with each other at peace, adios with this dream!

* Interestingly, there was news about a lady farmer being killed by a leopard in Junnar, Pune which actually was murdered by her relatives over property dispute, is what came to light in the police investigation. The relatives thought they could fake her murder as a leopard kill observing increased leopard movements around the village; just wow, we humans are, aren't we!

Blue Line, EC, Hon. NGT, Hon. Supreme Court & Scapegoat named Real Estate!

--

“We cannot expect people to have respect for law and order until we teach respect to those we have entrusted to enforce those laws.”
― Hunter S. Thompson

“For there is but one essential justice which cements society, and one law which establishes this justice. This law is the right reason, which is the true rule of all commandments and prohibitions. Whoever neglects this law, whether written or unwritten, is necessarily unjust and wicked.”
―
Marcus Tullius Cicero

Hunter Stockton Thompson was an American journalist and author, regarded as one of the principal pioneers of New Journalism. Marcus Tullius Cicero was a Roman statesman, lawyer, scholar, philosopher, orator, writer, and Academic sceptic, & known for his wisdom in history! Obviously, the quotes which I borrow from these wise men set the tone for my writing (read as frustration, especially when subject is system or govt) & needless to say the sharing is about law (for a change) or say the system which we call judicially & my business which is real estate (builders) & I am proud of it, about which many people will frown after reading! That How can be someone proud of a business which is hailed by the society & even by the law as corrupt, immoral, greedy, selfish & what not & I don’t say all of them are wrong yet not all builders are so & had it been not so then millions of people won’t be living in their dream homes at peace & there would have been total chaos on the road, isn’t it? And then we all have our profession to fill our stomach & this I know even a criminal can say but that’s why there is law & judicial system in place to decide what is right way of earning & sure real estate isn’t yet banned by this system, so I can have proud about my profession, which I do have!

Ok, now if you are wondering why there is sudden patriotism about real estate then there is a wave of patriotism in the country (I mean it, no sarcasm) & if one is not proud about one’s way of living then what's the use of being patriotic about the country you are living in! And the reason for my sharing is as usual news in the media about real estate by our Hon judicial systems (plz mind “Honourable” term), and they are none other than Hon Supreme Court & Hon NGT apex court. Now, most of us know the Supreme Court which is the authority when justice is the subject but many people (most) don't know about the NGT (or don’t care) & that is National Green Tribunal. Well, The National Green Tribunal (NGT) is a specialized judicial body in India established to provide a dedicated forum for resolving environmental disputes and promoting environmental protection. Its primary function is to ensure the enforcement of environmental laws and address matters concerning environmental protection, conservation of natural resources, and pollution control, its setup in 2010.” This info I have cut pasted from google to save time, in short anything related to environment conservation, to get faster justice & in the right way for right cause NGT has set up as parallel court & India was only third country after Australia & New-Zealand to set up such body for environment!

You can file your complaint in NGT if it is related damage to environment or nature in any way then you can file your complaint here & NGT has technical members to understand the object of complaint as well analyse the complaint which a normal judge with law degree may not be able to & it is a great step for nature conservation I must say!

Now the issue is about some judgements which NGT has delivered which can only be challenged in the Supreme Court only & the news were about the same. One was about few violations of EC i.e. environment control NOC which is required for any construction (building) with potential above 2 lakh sq ft built up area & another is demolition of 36 bungalows as per NGT order which were supposedly built in blue line (flood line) of river in PCMC. The first matter was ruled by Supreme Court with strictures about nexus of govt, politician & builders (industrialists as well) & one me feel its scene from some Bollywood movie where these three characters are always shown as on wrong side of law but that’s exact reason of my sharing. As, first & foremost why this EC in required for the buildings in the first place is basic subject & whoever may say whatever about this foolish (selfish) looking question but law is supposed to be governed by logic & build on facts & unfortunately when it’s blaming some segment (read as real estate) law turns a blind eye towards the facts & this is why I am writing this peace as my say over the said judgement about violation of EC! First & foremost no residential or commercial buildings should be asked for EC, as there is no new damage these building can do on the environment in any form which we doesn’t know about, is my blunt statement & I am making it as an engineer who has been in the field for more than thirty years & I care for environment & I myself am a wildlifer too!

And if you think I am saying this just to save the skin of builders then let’s understand the different industries in the business & their functioning as well impact on the environment at large & local level. When you build any factory at any place then it’s an ongoing process after completion of such unit as emission of chemicals or gasses as well its waste material disposal which can be hazardous for the surrounding & such many aspects come into picture. An industry in a locality is like an alien entering into your world & indeed its impact on the surrounding must be thoroughly analysed. Similarly, when you build any highway or railway line cutting through forest or hills then its damage as well intrusion on biodiversity as such development is part of any development plan but is a total new development. Same is true for a dam or a jetty or a port, as these structures are going to make an impact on surrounding natural resources such as rivers or oceans.  But that’s not true about buildings, especially the residential or commercial category. Because these are one-time things & humans will be occupying them & nor machines & no emissions of any hazardous gases or chemicals is there. And most importantly, all these buildings are not alien to the land or place as they are going to be there has  already been predicted by the local body/ govt via a document named, Development Plan via which every single home gets sanctioned & built. So, in advance you know how many sq ft of construction can be done on any particular land under a DP & how many people are going to be living in any building & you know what is the scene on the ground before any such building comes in for sanction. This is why we prepare a DP, & if any development is pertaining to the DP, then where is the question of analysing its impact on the environment or surrounding by any buildings which are being built as per DP, is my question, which must be asked by the real estate fraternity to Hon. Court, is my plea!

And what we call as violation is lapse in process of issuing the EC by the local committees formed for the same which asks questions like how many people will be living here, what about their water supply, how many cars will be here, their parking, drainage water recycle & reuse, garbage of these projects’ & all such which are already covered (or supposed to be covered) in the DP of a city or town by local authority as that’s their responsibility & not the builders! Rather if you want to ask for EC then ask to the concerned public body such as PMC, PCMC, PMRDA as they are the people who have prepared  Development Plan of a city & are supposed to take in to consideration impact of the development on the environment & not some builder who is getting sanction for his project by signing all the one-sided conditions put on his head by the govt & yet face violation cases, while the govt has taken money for sanctioning every single sq ft it has sanctioned & has anticipated this development via DP, right? On one side we beat drums of ease of doing business & on other side we make the real estate industry as scapegoat caught in the scissor of which one blade is Supreme Court & another is NGT & the govt is like operating this scissor as per its will & convenience. As where the govt wants it gets away without a scratch, may it be polluting rivers, encroachment on hills, water supply issues or poor public transport giving rise to private vehicles & pollution they cause & hundreds of such but never comes between the scissor named law then why only real estate, is my question to all! I repeat, I am not against the environment, no sane man can be, but its high time to define responsibilities when its conservation or damage to the environment which must be the main object of Hon SC & NGT & not target some entity as real estate, is my sharing about!

Coming to news about demolition of bungalows in blue flood line of removal, on my engg college’s whatsap group ghamasan (furious) battle of opinions was going on as few taking side of bungalow owners as they have put their lives’ saving in these homes & few are saying demolition is right thing. I must say an illegal act is illegal, if a poor man does it or a rich man does it, but! This "but" must be taken into consideration by the NGT or SC or say our law system as motive or crime is the most important aspect in any judicial proceedings, is what my GK is! And no common-man will do any illegal thing especially when it’s related to his or her home as that’s something to deer for everybody to lose! Problem is, may it be an illegal slum in river or on hill or a plush bungalow in same location, it's not the person who lives here is culprit but the entire system which makes (read as force) him live here & allows him to start living is the criminal but victim becomes the one who ends up spending his all earnings yet ends up as homeless! I am not taking side of encroachments but time & again we have failed to provide homes to every needy one as per his budget & outcome is, such illegal homes which indeed are encroachment on nature & must be demolished but in doing so my only question is, are we doing justice or just giving punishments to some scapegoats’? To my knowledge not a single slum has been removed from any such encroached land then why the law is not being applicable to every segment with the same intensity, as this is what makes people not to respect the lawmakers & law protectors! At the same time, there was third news where last year’s flood has damaged many homes which also are in blue line but they are there before blue line is marked (so they are legal, joke but that’s fact) & the very same govt is making amendments for these home’s redevelopment & allow construction in blue line for this particular case, is what the news said & the then Chief Minister himself has agreed to this proposal is also mentioned, I will be super interested/ curios what will be Hon NGT & SC’s stand on this proposal!

Guys, I have immense respect for law & the judicial system of our country but I think, when its balancing environment & life, we must strike a balanced line in between as we won’t be able to save the environment by naming some entity as guilty & punishing it but only by accommodating everybody for the cause & making right laws for the same, adios with this note!

Duty of a Father!

-

“Best wealth a father can leave behind for his son is, wealth of character” …

I know, character, morals, values, principles & such terms are not for today’s world yet one thing is equally true, even a thousand people start following a wrong thing yet it's still a wrong thing, is what I have always believed & what you believe becomes your character. So even if I may be a fool in the eyes of my sons, yet I (read as father) shouldn’t stop, first teaching & later sharing right things with my sons (or daughter) as there only is hope of a better society of tomorrow! And if we don’t do it thinking this genre doesn’t respect our words of sharing’s so why waste, then we too are just like them in a way, so I keep doing my bit! And I share such sharing with only one thought, somewhere some father may do something better for his son & help to make the world a shade better! I have been writing to my sons since they were twelve-year kids, I really don’t know what effect my letters (sharing) have made on them but it has done sure some effect on me as every year I sole search myself, world around us with new vision & I try to think like him (my son) as what will he like to know from me & that in a way connects me with myself in the process. If you feel this is too Philo thing (plz google) then this is genre of “Delulu is the Solulu”, which means by developing or say respecting delusional mindset i.e. Delulu means self-believing, optimistic, positive etc etc only can find the best solutions i.e. Solulu! As on one hand our genre thinks about the next genre is they are lost, non-committed, irresponsible, luckier than us & at the same time this genre must be thinking about us as non-understanding, over caring, conservative, impatient i.e. old fashioned! Weird world isn’t it, but that’s how most people look at the change & I am thankful to my sons who teach me to get along with the change by allowing me to share my such thoughts, though via letter & once in a year only, that’s my self-accepted return gift by them!

Watching your kids grow is a wonderful process only if you learn not to attach yourself to them much, is what I have learnt or say feel or say believe (does it matters?) & that surely doesn’t mean don’t do your duty! What not to get attached means, don’t try to make your son your copy or expect him to follow your rights & wrongs, but don’t give-up trying to teach them what you have learnt from life & let them choose their right & wrong!   And when I look back at the letters I have shared in the past to my sons (thankfully I have kept most of them) then it brings smile on my face, as from quotes of Disney, to Marvels, to Batman & today of Don Corleone, how the journey has changed its tracks but not the direction, that’s important & someday my sons will understand, if they want to survive in right way. Again, that’s my perception, as they may survive & succeed in far better ways than I can imagine & with believing in the things which I consider wrong. But that’s ok as after all, what more can a father expect from his son than to prove the father wrong & succeed in his own way, right? So, go ahead, if you are still holding your senses even after reading the nonsense till now, keep reading…

12th May 25

Happy B’day

"Women and children can afford to be careless, but not men."…Don Vito Corleone

"A man who doesn't spend time with his family can never be a real man."… Don Vito Corleone

“Never hate your enemies. It affects your judgment.”… Don Vito Corleone

Dear Dada,

Tell me which father writes his son on his B’day with quotes of a mob person as guidance but then first I was never a normal father & second, this is no more guidance but sharing of facts & facts are brutal! Rather only those men who has courage to face the truth should ask for it is what I always have believed & as I said I share that only what I believe so first you also have to believe in something to understand what I have shared, is disclaimer at start!

This is your 30th Bday & now you are a grown-up man in the eyes of the society, no more even young boy also & you are already walking on the path of having a family & I am sure not all the facts shared by Don Corleone are right as everybody has to choose his own right for that. The first quote for example, what he meant is no offence to women & kid or gender biasness but here Men means the one who is earning for the family & it can be a lady of the house also & in many cases even the kids need to earn for survival which fortunately you weren’t needed to do! Dada, first two quotes may seem crossing each other but they are not as that’s actually keeping two compartments of life separate, at business (read as work) you are nobody’s husband, son or brother & at home you are everybody’s somebody & never allow these two things get mixed up, is what Don meant & that’s why he may be a criminal but a wise criminal! Of late things has changed a lot in the outer world of our office & home & uncertainty is the future & that’s why you have to be most careful in every role you will be playing & just mind one thing, your survival may it be physical or financial, if you don’t care for it, no body else will, simple fact of life!

Now, what I would gift you, as you have practically everything what a man of your age would desire (most men) & I know you love living lavish, but I also know that’s the worst curse, its just like having a sweet tooth! Dada, spending is something where most men goes wrong even though they may be good at earning. On this front you & me are 360 degrees different but that’s ok, you will learn you own lessons provided you survive for accommodating what you have learnt, is the key! Coming back to gifting you, I would gift you my mistakes, my poor judgment of people, my wrong habits & if you are wondering what kind of father I am for gifting you such things then what I meant is its all these things which has made me understand myself & life in much better way & I have paid a great price for earning these gifts & as a father I wish you can learn from them without paying that price. As physical wealth, whatever I will leave for you, if you don’t have capacity to protect or handle that wealth, it will leave you one way or other & I want you to be a wise man, respected for his character more than a wealthy man, that’s my return gift if you can gift me!

About the third quote by Don, I will say don’t ever make enemies in the first place & in case you do just let them never know that they are your enemy! Go ahead, make friends, earn their love & respect as that’s far more costly affair than earning money as it requires a lot more than toughness & intelligence which is kindness, courage & ability to stand by right things, which you will! Last but not the least, be grateful to everybody around & never forget you Mother in right way, think over what it means, I am always around to support!

Baba, Aaji, Abbu, Aatya, Kiran kaka & all younger lot.
