City, Road Accidents & Mamacha Patra!

--

“The punishment suffered by the wise who refuse to take part in the government, is to live under the government of bad men” … Plato.

The name of the author many may not be knowing but one of greatest thinkers, philosophers from ancient Greece & his wisdom was then also ahead of time & always such men have paid the price for having that curse so did Plato & his later life went in captivity by the then Roman govt! Plato was always looked after suspiciously by the rulers as they were afraid that his philosophy and knowledge will make the citizens aware about their rights which no rulers like & fun is, even few thousand years down the line yet the situation has not changed though we don’t have many Platos' now around is also a fact!! The reason for this philosophical start is an incident which now has become a national issue & thanks to social media as this incident may soon become even international too!! Yes, it’s about a minor boy's drunk driving, taking the lives of two young people who were on a two-wheeler, in Pune. Entire media in every medium is full of stories related to this incidence & no wonder who’s-who has joined the band-wagon not because he or she has any real interest in the lost lives but most of them are there to show their presence & many are using it as an opportunity to settle scores! Whatever the purpose may be as even my sharing also may be put in any of these categories & I won't blame if done so, but do mind, the incidence wasn't first & definitely the last but what we are going to learn out of it, if we want to avoid such loss of lives in future!! Keeping full sympathy for the deceased young one’s parents as no words will be bringing their kids back yet my only wish while writing this piece is some kid’s lime may be saved & some parents won’t have to face this grief!  And this is applicable to the parents of the boy who was driving the Porsche too as they too are parents & guilty or not (read as right or wrong) but no parents think they are doing something wrong while growing their kid yet wrong things happen by the kid & then the blame game starts, is my point of sharing! And on top of it, I too am a father of grownup kids & I understand (I think so) problems while dealing with this genre & the expectations we have from them & society has from us as parents!

Those who knows about the incidence can ignore the starting brief but those who doesn’t know (which are more important for me), on 18th May, Saturday evening a young boy celebrates his 12th result with his friends, consumes alcohol (which is a normal thing for most kids of his age now, a bitter social fact) & drives luxury car of his dad by which he has come for the party & over-speeds on eastern suburbs of Pune & at 3am (past midnight)collides with a couple on their bike, which also are returning from their respective party, the couple dies on the spot & the boy is caught by the crowd & after taking some beating is handed over to the police. The real story starts from here, the boy happens to be a big businessman’s son (that too a builder), is a minor with no driving license & on top of it the luxury car he was also doesn’t have got an RTO licence plate or registration. The police registered an offence & pressed charges under respective penal code, till here everything was as per what happens in normal such cases but the real story started after this stage & all hail broke loose, is my subject of sharing! As post that what followed has not just left the deceased youngster’s relatives in shock but entire society felt that shock & the outcry got build just the way it has happened in Nirbhaya case (Incidence in Delhi few years back) rather thanks to Insta, this time it went over the top & even the candidate for Prime Minister has to take its relevance & commented. Hon Dy CM of State who holds the charge of Home Dept has to conduct a media conference to address the masses & Hon Police Comm of city who is considered as a tough cop when it comes to handling crime has to say, he will publicly apologize if the charges pressed by the police found wrong! Wow, just wow, one must be wondering what has happened & how a case of two person’s accidental death in a city where every day at least four or five people lose their lives in an accident got so much attention, is my subject of sharing!

Well, the reason is, the way system moved post-accident & the outcome as not only the accused drunk boy found not drunk (source of a medical test) i.e. no trace of alcohol in blood while the reels on social media showed the boy drinking in a permit room with his friends till late night. And when police produced the boy in front of Juvenile Board that too within hours of arrest which was Sunday, the Hon Court granted the boy bail on basis of writing an essay of 300 words about accident, & fifteen days to be worked with RTO for traffic management & some psychological therapy as well there are some other conditions too which are yet to become public, so I can’t comment on it! But the news of the boy whose driving has taken tow lives which also were some parents dear kids getting free even before their dead bodies were handed over to the families & that too on the conditions like writing an essay as punishment started an outcry which no one ever imagined, as I haven’t witnessed Chodo Bharat movement but now I realize how that feeling must be, as everybody on every platform was outraged & the anguish can be felt about the system at large, is my subject of sharing!

So, what system (read as govt) did wrong that public was outraged at this extent, the answer is, first, everybody could correlate the youngsters who lost their lives with their own family as with nearly half a million two-wheelers in this city every family’s some member is on road at some time of the day & this can happen with us also, is something hard to digest! And on top of that the picture which got painted & the bail to the boy in mere hours’ time, everybody has their own stint with govt system (especially Police) & all knows how a common man gets treatment there & this I am saying with due respect to my many friends in Police who are good human beings & good officers too, yet high time why police has such image in people’s mind (same for builders)! And then the verdict as agreed the learned respective judges must have used the law as per the provisions but why these provisions are never used when the culprit is from common man’s family & why so fast here & in millions of the cases people have to go through the infamous “Taikh pe Tarikh” grind, was another reason behind the outcry! And the real fun started later which reminded me a wonderful game we used to play in our childhood, named as “Mamacha Patra”. In this game (which is to be played with minimum resources the players are supposed to sit in a row back to back & the one who is running around them with a piece of paper or cloth in his hand chanting “mazya mamacha patra harawala” (my uncles letter has been misplaced) & the players sitting used to respond by shouting “aamhala nahi sapadala” (we haven’t found it) & the boy used to drop that letter on any of the siting persons lap who is considered as lost the game & has to perform a task as punishment told by others! This is what started between the agencies (read as govt) as right from who served the accused boy alcohol when he was a minor to how such bars are operating post their closing time limit to how the Porsche car was on road with our registration to the VIP treatment given to the culprit & deceased youngsters parents getting harassment from the inquiry officers as what the couple (which were friends) on the road so late & what was their relation with each other types questions (as per relatives of the deceased) to how the system acted so fast & even on Sunday the boy was produced in the court & got bail; I think here, the system failed to understand the basic law of society that justice, when delivered with same speed & manner to all is the only is accepted by the masses even if it may be a law!

Now the entire system is behind showing how they acted rightfully & it was other department’s duty which they failed to perform & the Mama’s Letter game is on in full swing. My point is when this all is going to stop? As every day on every traffic signal or on roads residents of this very city break every traffic rule & that’s why we are in top three in the country in fatalities of the road accidents & if the citizens are at blame, then the Police (read as govt) can’t just shrug their shoulders saying they have inadequate man-power to take strict action on blatant drivers of all these vehicles, is my point of sharing! At the same time, we have every law & system in place but every segment associated with system takes pride (and money too) in breaking or bending hat system than trying to protect it, in nutshell the entire society is blind, deaf towards the duty towards the society itself & it includes most of the personalities which have been active on social media for this incidence, is a fact, what are we going to do about it, is my subject of sharing!

Lastly, what made me sad (read as sick, frustrated, angry & disturbed) was the comment by the deceased youngster’s uncle, “now we are not sure whether to send our youngsters for their career in this city which we thought is safest for them!” Guys, this sentence & emotions in it, is an alarm for everybody in this city who has been benefited by the prosperity the city has given to us & high time to redefine our concepts of not just celebration but our attitude towards life & society! Do mind, the USA may be a country of riches but it's Bhutan which beats the USA on the scale of happiness of the citizens as at the end happiness is the outcome of peace of which safety is one major pillar! We all are son/daughter/ sister/brother to someone & so is someone to us & we all will be angry as well sad if we loss someone close to us from above list & if we all collectively decide & act then only, we can reduce the accidents which will not be at least tagged as murder, for sure; adios with this note!

Real Estate's Present & Future !

--

“I will forever believe that buying a home is a great investment. Why? Because you can’t live in a stock certificate. You can’t live in a mutual fund.’

— Oprah Winfrey

The comparison of home as investment with stocks (read as other sources of investment) may sound absurd yet looking from common man’s perspective for which the author of the quote is famous for, you will realize why real estate has always been in demand all across the world, may it be USA or a town in rural parts of India or even in our dear Pune! No need to make an introduction to Oprah Winfrey, a lady who by sheer razor-sharp brain with the charismatic screen presence has won hearts of millions, going beyond gender, colour, or nationality types borders! And when the topic is real estate in our developed State (self-proclaimed, some may say) then I thought of describing the importance of the end product which is a Home for real estate in the most simple way which Oprah has done!  Ok, my writing inspiration friend Narendra Joshi asked me to write something about  growth or future of real estate not just in & around Pune but in our State at large & many will say what’s big deal, builders always make money so real estate has bright future & I don’t cross argue this logic but! Had it been so then of-late there wouldn’t have been need of RERA (MahaRera in our State) tightening noose of its laws & rules around real estate as well EOW / ED (please don’t ask long forms even a school kid now knows them) has not got their hands full with names which are mostly connected to land deals or real estate!

With due respect, nature of real estate is such that no great brain is needed to become a businessman here but some brain is definitely needed once you become a real estater (builder) & earned some money, this is where the growth, development, prospect, future etc terms comes in the picture, is what I feel! I think its because of the nature of the business as I have always mentioned, this is the only business where the raw material doesn’t come to you unlike in any business but you have to go to the raw material & make a product out of it where it is! I am sure you are confused, so here is a simple analogy, right from making a car or washing powder (no, I am not refereeing to any political party) you can buy raw material from open market & get it to your factory & make final product with it & you can buy it from any place, like steel for auto industry you can buy from Jalana in Maharashtra to W.Bengal & if its washing powder then you can buy Costic soda which is raw material from Gujrat or from Goa & same is possible with any product. But in real estate industry, main raw material for homes is land & that you can’t transfer or move but you have to build the homes which is your finished product where your raw material is & this is what makes real estate a tricky business! As you can’t increase production of this raw material i.e. land but you can increase its production value or say potential to make finished product but that also up to certain limits. So, if your car factory is in Pune & demand of the care is more in Punjab, then you can send your cars to Punjab from Pune but if homes’ demand is more in Punjab, can you send homes there from Pune along with the land, answer is, no, right? This is why when you think of future of real estate you must have to take in account the situation around your raw material i.e. again the land as then only you can decide fate of the real state business at particular place or city.

That way the population is increasing of our country faster than any other country & if this population of 150 crores is a curse on many fronts but for real estate its a boon, in some way if not fully! Because all these people will need roof on their home for living or working & the raw material for the same is limited for that purpose & this has always kept real estate in demand but! The but is, for understanding the demand as unless there are people, there is no future for the real estate & the people must be in capacity to buy that roof on their head in legal way & for that the policies as well infrastructure around those roofs should be in accordance with the demand then & then only the real estate flourishes or else we have ample land in deserts of Rajasthan or deltas of Odissa but we don’t have demand for homes there, is a fact! Speaking about our Maharashtra State, that way even the lands in villages also have appreciated as I come from a small town named Khamgaon in Vidarbha & even in my town the shops rate fronting on the main bazar road of the town can match the shops on Karve Road, trust me it’s true! The only difference is volume of such demand, its only for some road & some shops there is client & same is true for the homes also, about offices here, lesser I speak better! In the nutshell, whatever growth or demand is there for real estate in any place is directly proportional to the opportunities of career at that place or say city as then only a person will think of buying a home at that place & settle with his or her family!

And with this criterion unfortunately most of the real estate which is flourishing in the State can be divided in five zones or regions, one is Mumbai City, another is Mumbai’s surrounding i.e. New Mumbai or on western side Vasai-Virar, third is the Thane-Nashik-Pune triangle & fourth is in pockets around other bigger cities of State such as Sambhajinagar, Kolhapur, Nagpur & fifth is, local centre’s growth which happens in & around every District place of the State! Though these centres are witnessing growth for real estate but reasons are different & so is the speed of growth or say chances of increase in investment or developments in every such centre, respectively. As take example of Mumbai City, with population of over 1.5 crores, the need for the exiting people itself becomes the biggest demand for real estate & space is limited due to the geographic situations of Mumbai & then its India’s finance / trade centre, so money (read as career) is here for the masses, which is major driving force for real estate in Mumbai. But not all can afford the price one has to pay for having a home or office in this Dream City & that’s why Mumbai is now mainly for the Super Rich or Super Poor only, no offense, I am only sharing what I come across in my experience!  Then the real growth is around Mumbai, where land is still available though for jobs one has to be a parasite on main Mumbai yet for real estate it’s a good thing. Here the role of connectivity to Mumbai as well as the creation of basic infrastructure for the homes is going to make a difference. I will come to Pune region last but let’s have a look at other major cities of the State as being a Nagpurian by myself, I know the fact that every alternate home’s some member has shifted to Pune-Mumbai for career from here & those which has been left behind whatever their extended neds about space or life style are, that’s what keeping the real estate in the city floating! Yet those figures are also big & then around the local rural areas people are shifting to centres like Nagpur the way people from Nagpur are shifting to Pune side. Though the scene in Sambhajinagar & Kolhapur is shade better because of industrialization around yet a lot is needed to match with Pune region, especially on social as well cultural front as that’s also one big reason when a man decides to settle in some place. The story with district centre cities is really tricky as the well settled families here wants to send their next generation to bigger cities with or without their will & there are less takers here yet whatever little demand is for the homes it is restricted to very few locations making the civic body’s work difficult on revenue front thus directly impacting the infra front of these cities & this the govt must take in consideration or else the migration won’t ever stop from these centres towards Pune region!

Lastly, coming to our Thane-Nashik-Pune region & especially around Pune, everything which is needed for the growth of real estate is available here but the main question is, for how much time the region can sustain the load of migrants without getting any right support from the govt for the same! As we keep reading news about how Chennai & Bengaluru are suffering on water & traffic fronts & many families are shifting from these cities, do mind that nobody comes in this world with the tag of immortality & even a city is also not an exception to this law! Only difference is, a city gets dead by no other reason but by its own burden that is, citizens; as if there is no water, no space to drive, no space to throw garbage, no oxygen to breath & even if the city offers you job & a lavish home, what’s use of such life, right? And on this front govt seems to be clueless (read as careless) as all it is interested is in increasing the output capacity of the raw material here by adding TDR & Paid FSI & TOD but what about giving the other supports which are also necessary to convert the raw material in to a finish product, about which nobody is speaking a word! Its like you have asked to make a car & you have made a nice car with stylish upholstery with best of safety features & designer looks but forgot just one thing i.e. the engine of the car! Situation of Pune region is somewhat similar which must be thought of by the real estate & that is possible when you are riding on wave of growth which is now! This city & region around it has everything essential for potential of growth for real estate but has a big responsibility also, to provide the same, rather better infrastructure which will stand with this growth or else like in our body the white blood cells are good as they fight any infection but too much increase of white cell leads to cancer, don’t forget this basics Punekars, adios with this note!

Understanding Wildlife Tourism; Part 1/3 !!

 --

“School of forest has many classrooms, all of them have one common syllabus i.e. learning co-existence” … Me.

As I have used my own quote (read as thought, as quotes are for celebrities) then you can imagine the sharing is about not so controversial topic but for a change about a topic which is enjoyed by many but spoken very less (no, it’s not what you think), I am referring to wildlife tourism! Post Covid suddenly there is a spurge in visiting forests & everybody wants to see the tiger which unfortunately is mistaken as wildlife tourism in our country which is a boon as well as a curse too! And via Jungle belles, which is run by my friends Hemangi & Aarti for urban women to have them exposer to wildlife, I also get to know many aspects about which most of these women along with their learned husbands are unaware about wildlife in actual & tourism too! So, we decided to make a series of some videos where we can share our experiences about wildlife tourism which can be helpful for those who want to enjoy wildlife!  This series of podcasts is to make the common man understand wildlife tourism as lots of myths, misconceptions are there which we have realized during our journey at Jungle Belles in the last five years especially post Covid era! If, on one hand, people want to explore new locations of wildlife yet the common thread is, everybody wants to see a tiger when its wildlife tourism is a fact! But unlike other tourism trades, may it be fun, heritage, historic or even in nature (trekking) wildlife tourism is different as here nothing happens as per your wish or even by paying money & that’s the real fun of it. The forest may be same but things happening won't perform in a pattern, for e.g. you visit Disney Land & the famous evening parade where all characters come together & meet the tourists happens every evening at same time & same route but in the forest a tiger or a leopard or a herd of deer won’t take same route at same time ever, even if some time they may seem to doing it but it’s a coincidence which we call your luck & this, many tourists don't understand!

Right from choosing destinations to limitations on booking of safaris & rules to follow & expense, many aspects are different when wildlife tourism is the subject. These all factors can be shared is what we thought & explained not just in writing but by a dialogue in audio-visual format so more people can get aware, so we decided to cover the topic in three parts, Understanding "Basics of Wildlife Tourism", "Myths of Wildlife Tourism" & " Do's & Don'ts of Wildlife Tourism”! I was lucky enough to visit many forests of our country in last twenty-five years & first time thought of actually sharing some tips (call as experience) which can be useful to those who have not yet ventured in the wilds but want to do as well those who had been travelled to some forests & has faced some difficulties or want to know more about wildlife tourism! I myself am more comfortable with writing so thought of penning down the podcast stuff in words & agreed some may find actual Q & A type dialogue in video easier to understand yet those who like to read (there are yet few such left) can use this sharing. To understand wildlife tourism first one must understand meaning of wildlife & here many will say what’s big deal, where there are tigers, it’s called wildlife & seeing tiger projects is wildlife tourism & I don’t call this as ignorance but that’s what has been hammered on our minds all the time i.e. wildlife is tiger sighting but this is exactly what we have to understand. By me, (keeping all due respect to wise names in wildlife) any place which has biodiversity displayed in its natural form with vegetation, animals, birds, reptiles (even aqua life) is wildlife & any visit to such a place can be considered as wildlife tourism! And fortunately, our country has been blessed with most diversified wildlife as right from the Himalayan forests to deserts of Rajasthan to evergreen Sal forests of Kanha, to rainforests of far east to dry forests of central India to western ghats, arid grasslands of deccan plateau to coastal forests & aquatic life of Hindi Ocean & Arabian Sea, we have practically every type of wildlife available to us. Out of thirty-two States, nearly in fifteen States there is presence of tiger & leopards are found in nearly all the States with Lion in Gujarat & add the Cheetah in MP if you are thinking of big cats! Apart from all these, every State’s majority districts have their own flora & fauna even most Urban /Agro based States like Punjab & Haryana too have their share of wildlife, & most crowded city like Mumbai has Sanjay Gandhi National Park in its western suburbs & all these places are a form of wildlife only!

Once you understand wildlife then you can plan your destination accordingly & most asked question is, which is good season to visit the forests or for wildlife tourism & which are the locations (read as, where can I see the tiger for sure) & my answer is, every season is best for wildlife tourism as that’s the beauty of wildlife because not just in every season but on every day, in morning & evening the forests looks different but I know, people don’t want such Sadguru types answer, so let me be frank, if you want to see a tiger then best season is summer & destination is Central Indian forests! Now coming to the real answer, again you must decide what you want to see in the wildlife tourism as then the season can be decided as well you must understand your comfort zone because if you want to see a Snow Leopards then you will have to visit Leh-Ladakh where even warm is near zero degree! In wildlife tourism every season offers you something different for e.g. Barsingha (Swamp Deer) of Kanha forests which changes its colour & fur in every season. In summers its grey & shreds fur while in winters its thick brown Cadbury fur & early summer it becomes golden yellow! And this is just one species I am referring to, as every species, even trees (Ghost / rubber trees) change their appearance as per the season change & unless you visit forests in all seasons you won’t understand what you like most & then you can decide when to go back again! Yet, a bit of study, asking questions to the right people will help you decide destinations & season as speaking personally for me, I can’t stand cold so I avoid visiting central Indian forests in winter where mornings can be very chilling. In such a season you can try coastal forests or western ghats where cold is not an issue. In the deserts of Jaisalmer winter mornings are very cold but you can skip morning outings & start safaris a bit late after 10 am when sun has come up, such modifications you can do depending up on your tolerance limit for weather. This is also an important aspect, as in wildlife tourism you are not in control to decide the timing to explore the wildlife but nature only does that! In most wildlife destinations timings of visiting the place changes as per local conditions & usually decided by the forest dept of the respective State & one should take information about the same before visiting. Most forests where tigers exist are allowed to operate as per guidelines of NTCA (National Tiger Conservation Authority) while at other destinations, timing changes as per season & related to sun rise & sun set as forest's life revolves around the sun. At many places even night safaris are allowed in a controlled manner now.

Many people also ask about accommodation & food arrangements at wildlife tourism & safety during safaris.  We have to understand one thing, with exception of few locations (such as Ranthambore) most wildlife destinations are away from urban settlements (Cities & Towns) & providing perfect service & getting trained man-power including infrastructure such as mobile network, all these things are very difficult to avail & we must respect these facts as still people here try to give best possible service to the tourists by fighting with all odds! To tell you just one example, when you have to go for safari at morning 6 am then right from giving you hot water for bath to keeping your breakfast parcel ready the hotel staff has to get up by 4 am in morning for this & irrespective of extreme heat of summer of cold of winter or rains they have to do it! And this they have to do while some of you may be drinking till late in the dining room as they have the option of not going to morning safari but the staff doesn’t have that luxury! At the same time well trained staff of all category from B Schools are not ready to come & stay here as living 365 days at such locations is not easy for the urban white collared personnel, so most establishment must depend on local man-power & right from teaching them to speak & dress up, it’s a herculean task! But do mind that’s how the local people can earn their livelihood & they only are the reason to save the wildlife! Many hotels don’t even keep an intercom system in rooms as by doing this they can avoid the tourists calling the staff for smallest of the things which are actually not at all necessary! Even

Wi-Fi services are not available in all rooms but at some central places such as the dining area & this is why we go to forests as we can spend time with nature & not get hooked up with the virtual world which we are for most of the time in our concrete jungle, right? Rather use the time here to wander around your place to know more about the wildlife, talk with the locals & you will understand how wonderful forests are with so many stories hidden in its expand! And speaking about safety, its wildlife & if you follow their rules & keep proper distance then you are a hundred times safer than our concrete jungle, something I myself have experienced & for that deal with professionals! Ath the same time most people involved in wildlife tourism are locals & slowly they too are understanding that it’s the tourists whose spending will only improve the local’s lifestyle which in return will be the best tool to save the wildlife, so they all are very much helpful & care taking for the tourists.

Lastly, friends when you visit any wildlife destination you are not just having good time for yourself but you are in a way helping many lives, especially of the people who lives around the forests & that’s the biggest payback to the nature which is like a gift to humankind by the gods, by me this is the best aspect of wildlife tourism! Thanks for keeping patience if you have read till here & if you visit the forests with such patience then definitely you will understand them in a much better way & will keep visiting them to know more about them, in every season, adios with this note…

Water War & Real Estate!

--

--

“People today have forgotten they're really just a part of nature. Yet, they destroy the nature on which our lives depend. They always think they can make something better. Especially scientists. They may be smart, but most don't understand the heart of nature. But nature never forget & forgive, the best example is what we have done to our water resources.” …  Akira Kurosawa

Akira Kurosawa was a Japanese filmmaker and painter who directed 30 films which includes Rashomon & Seven Samurai, in a career spanning over five decades. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential filmmakers in the history of cinema. And what he has written about nature (read as water) nearly thirty years ago, we are witnessing it today rather than facing it, is the right term! The reason to use Akira’s above words is, a war is going on in the country for votes & who will rule the country for next five years i.e. General Assembly (Lok Sabha) elections then another war, a lot bigger than the Vote War is going on in the entire country & that is, Water War which unfortunately our leaders either don’t understand or doesn’t care about! The clear signs are in the election campaign nobody speaks anything about water shortage which every person is facing in less or more from may it be a developed (sarcasm) city like Pune, or some villager in remote part of Vidarbha region of State. Neither anybody has taken any cognizance of the changed pattern of the main source of water i.e. rains & disasters it is bringing month after month to the farmers & even the cities, is my reason for sharing! And on the top of it weird actions taken by the govt authorities but weirder than that is the way news about the water are covered by the news media & no wonder real estate is always under the wrong end of the stick which is held by govt as well the media, is my reason of sharing!

We all are witnessing the extraordinary (read as abnormal) heat our dear Pune has been witnessing & if you are ( read as you too are) cursing the builders for cutting the trees, concrete buildings, hard paving all around &  reduced ground water level then I won't blame you because that’s what has been hammered on the mind of common man that for every wrong thing which happens to this city, the builders (read as real estate) are responsible so may it be air pollution or water shortage the real estate should be punished & recent water war is not exception to this but what is the reality, let’s have a look…  I came across a photograph of a site worker watering the concrete of a building which is under construction & the heading of the news said, “when the city is facing water shortage yet real estate is wasting the water for concreting,” words may differ here & there but in the nutshell what the news meant is, reals estate is wasting the water by using it for site work! If you are thinking it's one more article justifying how real estate is right by a developer then also, I won’t blame you, as what can be expected from a system where logic, facts & reasoning has already taken a back seat & which knows only to blame someone else of for our failure & water is a biggest example of it! And obviously outcome of all such outcry is, everybody starts thinks because of the builders & the buildings they build Pune is facing water shortage & in a way they are not wrong because more building means more people & it means more water demand while the source is limited so the water shortage for all i.e. culprit for water shortage is the builders (its sarcasm)! But who gives permission to all these buildings, who buys these buildings, who lives in the buildings & who gets benefited from the revenue generated from building these buildings & whose responsibility it is to give water to these buildings, nobody speaks anything about these questions, is my reason for sharing!

For ages (read as decades) the water war is already going on between irrigation dept which is responsible for water distribution in the State & PMC / PCMC which are local civic bodies over the use of water & quota which is supposedly allocated for Pune & in this war now there is PMRDA i.e. authority for planning of urban growth outside of PMC & PCMC. And joke is all of these are govt bodies only so the State govt in ruling is the only final decision taker yet till today the water use vs supply vs quota issue has not been solved & outcome is day by day population is increasing & water is same creating water shortage in the Pune region & builders only are being held responsible! On top of it, last year’s rains were less & this year’s heat is extreme thus the water storage in the dams are vanishing like vapours, but nobody is thinking or doing anything about it! Need of the time is creating new water sources & proper distribution systems for the same, at the same time nearly forty percent of the population lives in illegal homes (slums) so who is supplying them water & at whose cost, this question nobody asks or conveniently ignores! We have every modern technology at our service & yet we are unable to decide the exact population of Pune & need of water for this population & get these figures frozen once & forever & then check who is wasting the water, will this not be a right action plan? At the same time how can be using water which is necessary for construction of the homes which are legal & being built for the citizens of this very city can be considered as waste as with this logic stop Auto Industry’s factories’ production also, as they use huge water & close down all IT Parks as they too need huge water for cooling of their AC units as well their employees also use water & so does every industry or at least make them also use recycled water from PMC waste water treatment plants, right?

And biggest joke is, No Construction Site (legally sanctioned by PMC itself) gets PMC water supply connection for its Construction & yet it’s been painted that real estate industry uses (read as wastes) water & that’s why city faces shortage of water, I have no words left to describe this attitude of the media frankly! I think it’s the silence of real estate people which has been taken as their cowardice as on one side the media gets huge revenue from real estate advertisements (rates of advertisement are maximum for real estate per sq. inch) but when it’s about publishing right facts, the news media always plays role of a villain for the real estate & present water war is no exception to this rule! And all our Mai Bapp govt do is warn builders (read as threatening) from the very same media about stopping the construction work till the water supply doesn’t resume to normal, means what, till the rains don’t come, come on guys whom we are fooling!  Our population is increasing & the need for water will increase multiple times, it is simple maths & we should come together to find the right answer to this water question, as here enemy is not some particular industry but it’s our approach to the problem of water! City needs people as their income is what keeps the city running & prospering but these people need homes & homes need water, for building as well post completion of these buildings for living, we must not just accept but respect this fact! Rather new constructions bring revenue in the form of development charges as well are source of steady & perineal revenue in the form of property tax from which city’s development is going to happen so for construction industry rather water demand should be made available of priority basis & if you can make it the at least don’t create hurdles, is what I will say!

On parallel track, there is huge source of groundwater in the Pune region & which can be used in a lot better way than present by charging it in right methods at the same time think of arresting the rain water in what-so-ever way we can, so it will be used from surface as well from ground percolation. Think of collecting (pumping) all the treated water through PMC’s wastewater treatment plants at one central place & distributing it throughout the city by pipelines, it may seem a long shot but worth thinking about than using diesel consuming water tankers to distribute such water.  Tree plantation is very much important for ground water conservation as well trying to save existing green cover & for that right building rules must be formed & all this, is needed to be done fast as in any war, time is the essence & water war which we are already losing, is no exception to this law of the war, mind it!
