We do not remember days, we remember moments… Cesare Pavese.
Cesare Pavese was an Italian novelist, poet, short story writer, translator, literary critic, and essayist. Maybe his above quote is the reason why artists (poets or writers) are different from common people as they are not bound by the figures such as day, date, year but the moments they have lived. And the is Diwali exactly we need to follow attitude (or thought process) of the artists as the lockdown era may not be totally over yet & the threat of unknown enemy still looms on the head but no point in counting how many months or weeks or has been wasted in the lockdown or how much losses we have incurred in these months but need of the time is, cherish our survival & normality of life!
In all these months, most of us have lost someone close or have suffered losses in business or got setbacks on the career front in some or other form. Especially, the students had to go through a miserable time with no access to school, college or friends, I just can’t imagine the mindset of them! Though we are not alone in suffering the losses as the first time this war was really world wide & many countries, regions are still fighting the battle is a fact. Our country in a way is blessed with the inborn resilience to the adversities as most people here has to struggle every day for the survival even without the pandemic & I am not taking sides but with vaccination drive & many efforts by Central as well State govt (sorry to say but barring some political figures) as well with our immunity levels we should be thankful to each other’s if not God, for being able to see normality of life so fast. Good part with our countrymen (and women) is, we overcome hard times very fast & the bad part is we forget the lessons those hard times have taught us & the pandemic along with the lockdown era is also no exception to this social law of ours! As on one side, if few people are still worried or afraid of the virus or its variant then on the other side majority of the masses have already started behaving that the war is not just over but won! I am no expert or authority on viruses or pandemics but logically any war can’t be declared as won or over unless you see the last soldier of the enemy is dead or captured. That is my logical definition of winning or ending a war, which isn’t the case here, right? So, it’s always better to take care than to repent & that’s why this Diwali is special as for the first time we will be celebrating but with caution & that doesn’t mean taking fun out of it. It's like driving a car with a seat belt on or enjoying a boat ride with life jackets around our waists, that’s all!
Rather this Diwali try to have as much fun as you can & that doesn’t include burning fire crackers for sure as already, we have enough pollution so why add in more smoke to it! What I meant is, go out in nature or in the open, do shop a lot, not to show-off but to make other business people’s Diwali also happy, keep the markets rolling not by over-spending but by spending righteously, so everybody can be benefitted by each other's spending! The biggest damage lockdown months has done to the society is, not just casualties by some virus but stagnancy in the mindsets of the people which has been reflected in turnover of the trade of every kind. And that’s why this Diwali is special as it's in a way an opportunity for us to relive life in a normal way. And do mind when I say normal, it’s not necessary that we start living just the way life was two years back but normal means whatever necessary care is needed by taking that also we can enjoy & have fun! Most important thing hereafter for being normal is, keep the fear aside by keeping care in place & what better occasion of Diwali, a festival of not just lights but togetherness, happiness, to start the normal life ahead!
Indeed, for many, the life may not be ever going to be the same as every war gift us with the scars which remain forever though the wounds may heal. But just the way a true soldier carries the scars or even a disable leg or hand as a medal of the battle he or she has fought as its sign of his courage & fighting spirit, same way we also should be able to carry our loss in this battle & welcome the festival of light, that is what I call as Normalwali Diwali. And one more thing, don’t restrict your joy, courage, pride, care & happiness etc things to yourself or your closeness rather allow it to flow in every direction & let it reach as many people around as that will be true Normal. To conclude my wishes, I will share my own takeaway of Diwali; when we lit a candle or a sky lantern to welcome the Diwali at the entrance of our home, does that candle or sky lantern brightens only the faces of the residents of the respective home? No sir, the candle or the sky lantern at our home brightens every by-passer’s face which looks at it without differentiating the age, gender, religion or caste of a person or animal, this is what I have learned & its adoption of this philosophy of the brightness, will make the Diwali, a Normalwali, Happy & Green Diwali, so be it, for all of you as well your family & friends! …
